Hi,

I'm posting in regards to my mothers 42" Toshiba rear projection LCD (waiting for her to forward me the model). The display has been in service for a few years and has performed flawlessly until a few months ago. Basically, the display has developed an issue where the image is distorted by vertical wavy/squiggly lines rippling width-wise across the display. At first it affected only the top third of the display but now it's affecting the entire display. It does not appear to be the source as it happens with the DVD player connected via component and the HD satellite receiver (Star Choice) connected via DVI. Oddly enough, if you cycle through the input resolutions on the Star Choice receiver the behaviour is severely diminished and tends to stay that way for a few days... until it inevitably returns.

Anyway, they've had a hard time getting someone out to look at the display and the nearest authorized service centre is ~100km away.

Can anyone offer some opinions as to the source of the problem? Is it worth pursuing diagnosis/repair or should they bite the bullet and look at buying a new display? Note that when functioning properly this display suits their needs perfectly so if the repair cost is < replacement cost (say half), that could be desirable.

I can probably snag a photo if it would help narrow down the problem.

On a possibly related note, they had their roof shingled last year and had a Star Choice installer out who remounted the dish in a different location and with a short run of cable. The installer apparently said that the shorter cabling could cause the receiver to "fry". I have no idea as to the validity of the statement (shorter cable = hotter signal???) but they're concerned it may have been a factor. I have no idea.

Thanks.
