View Full Version : Overkill for the room? MFW-15
oachalon 09-17-08, 07:33 PM At this time my system is setup in a room that is about 12'x15'x8' ceilings.
My setup at this time is:
Axiom M60s
Axiom VP150
4 Axiom QS4s.
My subwoofer i built myself. It is a TC-Sounds 15" 3000 in a 215L enclosure tuned to 15.4Hz running off a EP2500.
Denon 3808CI
The system sounds fantastic and very clear. The only problem i have is that there are some nulls in the room where people/and me are not really hearing the subwoofer. I have have a sweet spot like every room where everything sounds fantastic but then there are the usual couple spots that are pretty dead. I am considering getting a second sub to fill in the nulls.
I have been eyeing the MFW-15 because i really dont have the time right now to DIY and would have to purchase a couple new tools to do it this time.
Is the MFW-15 and my current sub too much for this room. I know we are all bass heads and we say you can never have enough headroom but in a serious sense, would i just be nuts for doing it?
Also i know you are not supposed to mix subs together but TC-Sounds is pretty much a dead company and i do not have room to build another monster like i have now. And to answer the question i will not part with my baby. I even give it a nice rub sometimes just cause i am so proud.
Basically it comes down to Yay or Nay. What do you guys think?
No - it would not be too much sub for that sized room.
Disclaimer: My subwoofers cost more than all the rest of my audio equipment combined.

Hahaha. I love it.
In a word -- no. It will not be overkill. To copy a post I made minutes ago on another forum -- it's BEST if you make sure to actually calibrate it with the following:
1) a Radio Shack SPL meter (not the digital one)
2) a bass test tones CD (like this one http://www.realtraps.com/test-cd.htm)
3) the spl correction tables that are stickied at the top of the forum (at lower frequencies, the RS SPL meter requires correction, as it doesn't register the spl as well).
rlj5242 09-18-08, 09:47 AM I'm another TC-3000 user. Are you using some type of EQ on your sub? The 3K is a very high inductance sub and will have a peak at around 55hz. Adding a Behringer Feedback Destroyer really flattened the response on my sub.

oachalon 09-18-08, 12:17 PM Yes i am using an EQ the popular behringer one forget the model number. The response really isnt the problem. The subwoofer has a pretty flat response, but like i was saying before there are just some parts of the room that are just dead zones and i was looking at a second sub to fix those issues.
So right now i have 2 people saying yes.
Bunch of bass heads lol.

Try a HSU MBM-12. The concept works for large rooms.

rlj5242 09-18-08, 02:26 PM I'll agree with everyone else - get another sub. Since you can't do DIY right now why don't you get someone to build the cabinet for you? Matching subs are so much better! And yes it is hard to find a 15" 3K but they are available. I've seen a few in the last few months pop up on E-bay and some car audio sites.
And one person's overkill is another person's "headroom".

oachalon 09-18-08, 04:34 PM RLJ i have seen a couple TC-3000 15s pop also and have considered purchasing it but i always waited too long. The problem is i do not have the room in the room to build a matching cabinet to the one i have now. The MFW-15 is gonna clear by like an inch on the sides if i considered purchasing it.
I dont have to get the MFW-15 but its around my price range and a lot of people are raving about it.
Oh decisions, decisions, decisions.
Pure-Evil 09-18-08, 06:44 PM nice things about the MFW15 is if you don't like it you can send it back free of charge. they pay the shipping both ways

They might pay to ship it back, but I can tell you for a fact they do not pay for shipping to you. I just received mine last week and shipping was >$100.
Pure-Evil 09-18-08, 10:41 PM um. i think in the sale right now shipping is free..i could be wrong though.
oachalon 09-18-08, 11:03 PM Im pretty sure that shipping isnt free if you buy a single one?

There are way too many sales going on right now at AV123 to keep track of. However, I think this is how the shipping goes:
ELT package: $999 for 5 speakers including shipping. Add a MFW-15 for $599 (satin black), sub ships free as well.
Rockets package: $2,195 for 5 rocket speakers AND one MFW-15. Customer pays shipping.
Two MFW-15 Deal: $1,250 (satin black). Customer also pays shipping for both subs. Customer is issued $251 in AV123 credit to use on a future purchase so they can say it's $999 for both subs - but that includes $251 more that you will have to spend there.
One MFW-15: $699 (satin black) plus shipping.

That's how I'm reading it too, although I did misread it at first. Was going for the credit card till I reread.
Buzz kill, lol.
*EDIT* After reading arount the forum I don't feel as bad, looks like I'm not the only one.

I had to do a double take as well. I have an Epik Castle on order and almost regretted it when I saw the dual MFW-15 sale. But once I realized it would still cost me ~$1500 out of pocket I felt better about my choice.

Exactly.
Seems like its being made out to be a huge deal. It's OK, I guess. As someone that's waffling between av123 and Epik though...it doesn't blow my socks off.

Out of curiosity, what Epik sub(s) are you considering?

A pair of Knights or Calibers. Sadly, my disposable income isn't what it once was, so it'll be in phases, whatever I get. First, one Knight/Caliber/MFW15 paired with a PB10, then another one to replace the PB10 a few months down the road.
Pure-Evil 09-19-08, 03:28 PM a couple pictures of the Diamond Palisander Rosa MFW-15's might help change your mind..or sway you

I'll admit, posts like yours (boy, you sure have seemed pleased with these judging by your posts as of late) do sway me.
Good time to be in the market, mehtinks.:D
Two is not an overkill, especially if you like bass and you like relism in HT.
My HT is 13x18x8 and I am using Epik Conquest.
It does a great job, very musical and hits hard in movies.
But I am a sick puppy and feel the need for a second one.
I want even more impact. I want to feel the air move in all seating positions.
oachalon 09-20-08, 12:02 AM Pure-Evil that is a beautiful looking sub you have there. I am still looking and hopefully make my decision soon. Just wondering if i should save my money and put it towards the new chevrolet camaro when it comes out. I think its time to have a second car just for fun.
We will see. I dont know whats happening with me. Before i could just do it and order it, but now its been difficult for me to spend the money on the somewhat bigger purchases.

yup. i am very happy, but...just so you understand if these subs were crap i would be just as vocal about them the other way too. i don't owe anyone anything, but i think if i can help ppl to realize what a great deal these are then why not right? the epiks, eD, hsu and svs all make great subs..but man are they costly compared to the onix stuff

You can never have too much sub as you calibrate it all together to sound right. The extra subs just even out the frequency response in the room and allow much more headroom. I seem to remember reading 4 subs in a room is best.
The best scenario is 2 of the same sub but many people do run different subs, just a bit more of pain to calibrate for flat response, as each sub and it's position will have different affects on the FR curve.
