After a quick search I found lots of people asking about sound board. The answer is always the same. There's something better. What is it good for? I'm assuming its the stuff HD or Lowes cares in 4x8 sheets, maybe 5/8 thick, and is supposed to reduce sound according to the tag. My local HD stocks this stuff which leads me to beleive it sells.

Thanks

Good for making some money for the Mfgr and HD.

Some people think of Homasote as soundboard:

Others are thinking of the Celotex Soundstop boards which are basically building sheathing without the lightly sprayed tar weather protection.

The sound stop board does improve the soundproofing of a wall structure but as it turns out for Home theaters it doesn't help much with the lower frequencies (the sub-woofer) so the logical choice if you are going to the effort of putting up two layers to just put up two layers of Drywall which does help with the lower frequencies. Then along came Green Glue and now the preferred solution is two layers of drywall with a GG sandwich.

Soundboard, and all related products that Big mentioned has no significant mass. As a decoupler between the studs and drywall, it is mediocre, and specs in acoustic tests call for the drywall to be secured to the soundboard, not studs. Hardly a substantial attachment.

Soundboard does have utility in a floor for impact noise, however, so we don't want to write it off altogether.

Homosote is also what is widely used as the underlayment for model train layouts. It is soft and very easy to fasten track, drill holes, cut to shape, etc.

Do not waist your money. We used Soundbboard (celotex) in our theater under 3/4 DW and the soundboard does not do much at all. In a recent re-model of our master bedroom we used Green Glue. We had the original layer of 1/2 dw then GG then 3/4 dw. The reduction of freeway noise was amazing.

Too bad we did not use Green glue in the theater.
