I have a VIP 612 receiver and have basic cable (with my internet from Comcast) that provides my locals in HD/digital. So far have been unable to get the receiver to "see" the stations when I do the channel scan.

Is there a certain setting I need to have in the HDTV Setup menu? I've tried everything, but it scans and finds nothing. Does this receiver only recognize OTA and not through cable? HELP! I'd rather not pay $5 when I already have these.

Dish receivers will not receive the type of signals that cable uses. To get locals for free connect it to an antenna or get a receiver that will get QAM.

Yeah, the wife has an issue with changing inputs every other channel change.

I thought the 612 might have an ATSC only tuner, but why in the HDTV setup menu where it says "analog type" does it offer a "cable", IRC and HRC option? What are those options used for? THANKS!

I thought the 612 might have an ATSC only tuner....It does, you need an antenna for DTV recetion.

why in the HDTV setup menu where it says "analog type" does it offer a "cable", IRC and HRC option? What are those options used for? THANKS!Non-digital cable.

Thanks Ken, but it doesn't even "see" the non-digital stations over cable. The scan comes up with O channels found. Unfortunately, I am on the wrong side of a mountain and cannot receive any OTA HD.

I am really perplexed at that cable/IRC/HRC function.

The new Dish receivers do not receive analog from any source. You need to try a QAM receiver with cable. However some cable systems encrypt even local HD channels and it is possible that they could be filtered out before going into your house if you are not a digital subscriber. This is unlikely since you have cable internet.
