I'm thinking about putting my Dish Network dual HD/SD DVR satellite box in a cabinet over my TV and have some questions.

First, the dual box does a really good job picking up the signal from the remote in the other room-- practically flawless. Originally, we had a box upstairs that also operated the TV downstairs. This worked adequately but not perfectly, though I don't know how it worked at all. Anyway, I wondered how this worked without a repeater/extender and if it would work if inside a wooden cabinet.

Second, I wondered about the heat issue. The inside of the cabinet is probably 2' wide x 2' tall x 1.5' deep. There is a shelf located around the center of the cabinet. Would heat be an issue? The box currently resides in a much smaller area (about 2' wide x 7" tall x 1.5' deep), though there is no door on the front. My problem is that the box is going to have to sit on top of my DVD/receiver in its current small area or by itself in a cabinet.

Any answers or advice?

May want to ask this in the HDTV recorder thread for this model.

1. It should work - the RF signal does have a finite distance it can reach depending on the materials in needs to go through to reach the DVR.

2. Heat is always an issue with electronics - the less of it the better. Shoving that many electronics in a small space with no ventilation is probably not a good idea. All else fails, follow the manual.

I wasn't really sure where to post. I did a search but didn't find what I was looking for. However, most of the similar type posts were in this forum so I thought I would give it a try.

As far as the heat goes, this would be the only piece of electronic equipment in the cabinet. My other piece of equipment (DVD player/receiver), would remain in the open slot under the TV.

Oh and a question, if the sat box is using RF, how does my TV remote (IR) operate it?

UHF/RF is for TV2. IR is for TV1.

Let me add another note regarding the original message.

I had a 622 in an enclosed IKEA stand. It got hot but not hot enough to cause damage. There are external fans (see E-bay) as well as laptop coolers (the poor man's method) that people have added to the 622/722 to draw away/cool the units. Plenty of people do it. Sattelite receivers are pretty rugged--even the DVR's. Enclosing one is not as risky as enclosing a Mits RP DLP or an Onkyo receiver.

Dish's tuners do get very, very hot. Personally, I only keep mine not too closed in, on a bottom, floor level shelf where it's coolest.

It would only work with line of sight - the DVR has both IR and RF pickups.
