View Full Version : Best CD player connection
geotlyrae 09-19-08, 08:00 PM I have an older Onkyo 6cd player which has only a red/white connection. My A/V receiver is a 1909 Denon. I also have a PS3 through HDMI connection, and an Sony DVD player which has optical and coaxial inputs. My question, is it worth to connect the cd player or listen to cds from the PS3 or the DVD player? Wondering if playing cds from a hdmi, coaxial or optical connection will sound any better than the Onkyo?? Thanks..

Probably not, assuming the Onkyo is in good working order.
geotlyrae 09-19-08, 10:59 PM I did set up the Onkyo, and it sounds fine through a 5ch stereo setup.. (Pink Floyd - The Wall) I'll listen through the Ps3, and see if there's a difference..

The Onkyo with the Red/White connection is analog, correct? If, it doesn't make a difference in sound quality, I'll stay with the Onkyo (6cd changer).

You mention 5 channel stereo. I assume that's on your receiver, not your player, since it's a digital signal processing mode. Have you tried PLII instead, which is a much better DSP for creating surround from stereo sources? I find 5 channel stereo disconcerting since it puts voices in all the speakers.
geotlyrae 09-20-08, 08:44 AM Yes, the Denon is processing the music.. I tried "Dolby PLII cinema" setting, and it's much better. Thanks... I thought, that this setting would only work with DVDs or Blu-Rays. Does the Denon upconverts the sound? Thanks anyway, it sounds great..

I thought, that this setting would only work with DVDs or Blu-Rays.It works for any two channel source.
Does the Denon upconvert the sound?I don't think so. I'm not aware that audio can up upconverted in any meaningful way.

I thought that this was the setting... My other choices on the 1909 Denon are:
DTS Neo:6 cinema, Neural, 5ch stereo, Rock arena, Jazz Club, Mono Movie, Video Game, Matrix, Virtual, Direct and Stereo. No PLII music by itself..
Thanks..

Ps. The audyssey feature was on, not sure if it has anything to do with the sound settings.. Also, the Dynamic volume setting on position.

Been reading the manual, and it does have a setting PLII music, but, I cannot figure it out yet how to get there... This manual is a little complicated, and it even shows a different diagram than what the remote looks like..

This manual is a little complicated, and it even shows a different diagram than what the remote looks like..Denon manuals are not the most user friendly. But, pp44-47 explain that you select the Surround Mode first. The choices are PLII, DTS Neo:6, and neural. When you've selected PLII, then you can choose one of four parameters - cinema, music, game, and ProLogic. I have a Denon 3805 and it works similarly.

Finally got the PLII music mode playing.. Now all I need is to figure it out the best speaker setup (previous thread). Thanks for the help..
