From what I understand ideal subwoofer placement is room dependent. Are there any benefits to nearfield placement in an almost square room or is it no different? I was thinking of sliding the Conquests behind the listening position.
Also what else can be done to a square room? I have tri-traps from floor to ceiling in the corners.

Nearfield placement localizes the bass more but it also induces more tactile effects. Take your pick. Really depends on the room.

I have tried near field placement in may different configurations with my HSU 3 3 T and 2 MBMs and could not find any config I liked so everything is up front now and as today I am happy.
As you said it comes down to your room. Unfortnately the area behind my LP opens to the right and I suspect that is why I could not find a near field config I liked.
Move, measure and repeat until happy.

i had an HSU VTF3 MKII and i had it near field (directly behind my seat actually) and i loved it, anywhere else in the room and it just was not enough bass for me, even with the gain turned up and the turbo add on...i have a big room btw....and the tactile feel was awesome! now..i have 2 mfw15's 20 feet away at the front, and i get even MORE tactile feel from those, including more bass, than i ever did with my HSU. just giving my .02

ANd as you would well expect, 2 MFW-15s are alot more sub than a 3 2
My room dimensions are 15' 8" x 15' 11" x 8'
Sealed. Carpet over concrete floor. Drywall covered walls. One 72'' x 48" window. Well is stuffed with 4" of insulation and covered with soild panel shutters.
My listening position is a single recliner mounted to a
4' x 4' x 3/4" plywood platform fitted with a pair of original ButtKickers.
Subwoofers available:
Duel Epik Conquests
HSU ULS-15 DuelDrive System
HSU duel MBM-12's
2 Anti-Mode 8033B room correction units.
I laid the Conquests on their sides and placed them back to back between the listening position and rear wall. The drivers are firing toward the side walls. I used an 8033 on them after placement.
At the present tme this is all that is being used for low frequencies besides the tactile transducers. The speakers use an 80 hz crossover point and the tactile transducers use a 20 Hz lowpass.
I also just switched over to some Klipsch Reference series speakers after using Definitive Technology bipolars for 10 or so years. They are not even completely setup thats how recent.
Mains: RF-83
Center: RF-64
Sides; RF-63
Rears: rs-63
I have very little flexibility as far as moving the seating position. I am currently 5' from the rear wall which places me 9' from a 73" monitor.
I don't have REW or any provisions for measuring other than an SPL meter and a sine wave test tone disc.
I am driving the system with an older Parasound C2 controller/B&K Reference 200.7. I have an Integra DHC-9.9 on order.
My HT used to be setup in this room when it was a bedroom. This is the first time I have tried nearfield subwoofer placement.
For years I ran duel subwoofers one in each front corner with no room treatments.
