View Full Version : Can molding be used with OC 705 sound panels?

I received my OC 705 from a sponsor here and it appears that the corners are pushed in just a bit on the insulation panels. I'm not sure if this is supposed to happen or not, however it seems that over time, if I just attached it to a wood backing that the front corners could be susceptible to "caving" in over time. Could I put some sort of thin baseboard molding around the edges to give it a hard edge? My plan is to mount each 2" deep sheet of OC 705 on a frame of 2x2's then attach 3 1/2" molding to the outside edges of the 2x2 frame and should protect the corners of the OC 705. Then wrap it with cloth. Does this lose too much of the side absorption qualities? Please bare with my questions as I'm still quite new to the HT scene! Thanks in advance!

You would lose the absorption on the side faces.

But if you look at the area, it would be 2"+2" on the sides versus the 24" of face area, and then not quite as much on the top and bottom edges. They will still work very well.

Would the 3.5" moulding create an air gap behind the panel? If so, that would improve the low end absorption. Some people drill a bunch of large holes in the framing to regain the lost absorption. That weakens the frame though so don't overdo it if you go that route.
