jostenmeat 09-20-08, 04:24 PM Why don't you ask at the Ascend forum? No one is more familiar with what they need than the people that own them. If you like AVS, there's an Ascend thread in the speaker forum. Cheers.
Well the only reason why sometime when you go to those forums there one sided. just not sure what the best brand ect for the setup i have.
jostenmeat 09-20-08, 04:31 PM Hm, well, I find that interesting. This is what I know presently regarding the choice of receiver and/or amp.
Receiver is the easy part. Decide based on features you need. If you don't know what you need, I daresay you don't need much. This is not a slight! I, for example, have a multi-row dedicated theater, and my needs are also extremely modest. I wanted matrixing of hidef HT bistreams, pass 24fps. Pretty simple. Bonuses were better bass mgmt and Audyssey, but not deal breakers.
The amp is a little bit trickier. You have to ask yourself:
- how loud do you like it? SPL levels
- sensitivity of speakers
- how far do you sit from the speakers
- how large is the room, in volume
- is the room very live, or rather dead after treating it acoustically
- minimal impedance of speakers
- nominal impedance of speakers
I won't be able to provide you the magic answer necessarily, but once you have an idea of the above, along with feature-needs, the choices will narrow down big time. Oh, and a stated budget never hurt either!! ;)
My room is 20X12 I'll be sitting about 12 feet away want something that will power it pretty good I'll mostly be watching movies and maybe very little on music.. may sound funny something that sounds good but don't know a whole a lot about rec. hope this helps somewhat.. Also this will be a 7.1 setup
jostenmeat 09-20-08, 04:56 PM Believe it or not, your receiver choice is very, very, very far down the list of things that will affect your SQ.
speaker positioning
sub
sub positioning
sub calibration, phase, xover, mgmt
listener positioning
room acoustics
efforts to handle room acoustics
etc
There are a lot of decent receivers out there. the first thing you have to state is how much the budget is. RIGHT? I mean I could throw you a whole bunch of
$3,000 receivers, but then you say oh that's too much, then I will say, why are you wasting my time, why don't you tell me straight up to begin with?
none of us get paid to type here. good luck. check out the stickies on top in the receiver forum
Well i want to spend about 700.00 or so right around that area. the room is a perfect square. The sub is going to be placed somewhere in the front right side of the room the speakers will be place on all corners of the room plus the mid will be at ear level right where the couch will be around 12 feet away. i just don't want to purchase a rec. and find out it wont power it enough.. But i don't want anything overkill either. Thanks for all your help i'm very new at this stuff and don't know much about it at all. This will be my first theater setup just want to do it right. Thanks again

the room is a perfect square.
Like i said, placement is critical. Already the fact that you have decided on sub placement before experimenting makes me hope that you are lucky.
A square room is the worst possible. The only way its worse is if the height makes it perfect 3D cube.
The best amp section available in a receiver at that budget is the Onkyo 805. It is BIG, it is HEAVY, and runs quite warm. Some people hate Onkyo. I think they offer tremendous value. I believe it has the same THD, crosstalk as the Denon 3808, yet even better SNR, all at half the price. OTOH, Denon is widely respected as a brand.
There should be all sorts of choices if amp is not the first priority. please browse and search the receiver subforum.
BIslander 09-20-08, 07:14 PM There are lots of receivers in the $700 price range that will work well for you. You really can't make a bad decision with a Denon or Pioneer or Yamaha or Marantz. Onkyos also get a lot of love in these forums.
I'd recommend you look at the features you want, especially in the area of HDMI video processing, to make sure the AVR does what you need (or don't need) in between your BD player and display. Then, go to an AV shop that carries the brands on your list and give a listen. Receivers all color the sound a little differently. Get one that suits your taste.
Ok i will need one that will handle a 7.1 and have about 4 HDMI for the following.. Xbox, HD cable Rec., DVD player and Laptop, all these components will need to go threw a rec. and the HDMI will go to the Epson 1080UB projection..
