SatelliteComp 09-20-08, 08:59 PM Looking through ebay for a used projector that would be good.
Anyone have any thoughts???
Or do you think it is worth it spending like $2,500 on a Sony HW10??
Not sure!

Don't you mean $3500 on a HW10?

Well, when TVs and Projectors hit eBay, they are usually about 30-40% off MSRP. It could range anywhere from $2,000-$2,500 although my bet is on around $2,500.
mark haflich 09-21-08, 08:47 AM I know dealer cost because IAAFD. And its nowhere near $2500. So you are wrongl on this one. You are figuring incorrectly by a long shot. This machine is a low margin product. Many Sony products have much higher margins.

odd this one - as many readers will know - we get stuffed in the UK for prices.
However, the first price we've seen for the HW10 is £1,495. Times that by the current exchange rate and you get $2550!
The only other PJ we get a good deal on is the Samsung A800 - currently about £2500 from a few retailers.
Anyway - back to the OP. I'd be nervous of buying a used projector. Every single model has a percentage of variance. Some of these units, I wouldn't be happy with. This is why people pay Jason to pre-check units.
That said, if I know the source (i.e. it was a unit I was familiar with), I'd consider it.
Check the AVS classifieds and then look at their post history to see what they originally said when they received it, if it was originally bought from AVS, checked by Jason, etc :)
I wouldn't play the ebay lottery with this one personally.
mark haflich 09-21-08, 09:48 AM All I know is the lowest current US dealer price. No one is goiing to lose many hundreds selling them at $2500 US.

I would wait a month or two. When the Epson, AE3000, VW70, RS10/20, etc. come out there will be projectors available here at AVS. Someone just picked up an AE2000 for $1700 or so here at AVS (classifieds). I would be cautious with buying a projector from Ebay unless it is a reputable seller. I'm amazed when I see someone win an auction for a "high priced" item from someone with almost no history.
This week I inquired about a JL F112 on Ebay. It seemed suspicious because it listed a buy it now price without an actual buy it now option. The seller emailed me with a scheme to get him pain outside of Ebay. This was the "buy it now". The seller's english was so poor that it was even more suspicious. Hopefully the auction was pulled. It was gone by the end of the day.
You may also want to check out the for sale forums right here, also audiogon, videogon.
As for "good used" keep in mind that every year the ~$2000-$3500 price range bring better and better levels of performance, and older projectors are now missing a few features and / or behind in some picture quality areas, and the price drops are not necessarily commensurate with that inequality.
I've found that most people want quite a bit for their used projectors that are still good enough to be in demand used. That said, I'd say the following are still in the ballpark of the new projectors, especially at the right price:
- Epson 1080UB
- Mitsubishi HC6000
- Sony VW40, VW50
- RS-1 (although these still tend to be quite expensive used)
Just make sure you look at the price differential versus a new pj and decide if its really worth the risk with a used one.

Curious what you think is "quite expensive".
Anyway, judging by the interest in the RS100/200 group buy from current RS1/2 owners, there will be a lot of them coming up for sale; I know mine will.

Nah, the VW-60 is less than $3,200 on eBay which is 36% off. The VW-200 costs $10,000 which is 33% off. It's been that way since they first came out. Also, as long as you have a receipt, Sony doesn't care where you buy it.

Are you positive that a RS-1 will be better than the HW-10? It got a pretty good review from that guy.

You're spreading misinformation. For example: buy it at a discount from Price Japan and the warranty (U.S.) is absolutely not valid here. Call Sony's repair facility in Laredo to verify this. Many Ebay projectors that are new are actually Japanese imports.

Dunno, but I'll bet it will be cheaper, and many, like mine, will have a transferrable extended warranty.

Not going to happen. Also be careful on ebay...there are a lot of unauthorized dealers.

I base "quite expensive" on the ratio of the used price to the price for a new unit (price quoted to me by a dealer, as opposed to MSRP), and the age of the projector.
Other projectors have dropped to 50% of their street price at launch at a comparable age, and, well, the RS-1 hasn't come close to that, which speaks to it's performance. If you're not getting a really big discount on a used projector, I don't see why you wouldn't just buy a new one.
