View Full Version : Sony HW10
timc878 09-21-08, 09:42 AM Hello everyone,
I took a couple of screenshots from my HW10 and thought I would post them. I am very impressed with the colors from the HW10 they are very bright and vivid without being over the top.
stainless-steel 09-21-08, 12:59 PM Thanks,
I'm looking at getting one of these to replace my ageing HS20.
I've got a couple of questions for you if you don't mind.
Is the increase in sharpness as obvious as Jason suggested in his review?
Is the dynamic iris noticeable during operation?
It looks like Sony may have finaly delivered at the $3k price point with this projector.
Thanks for the pictures.
repdetect2 09-21-08, 02:35 PM Nice Pics, can you post some images of how you have it mounted and what screen your using?
Dr. Spankenstein 09-21-08, 07:54 PM Just a guess, but from the drop-off on the right side of the screen (in first pic) I would imagine he has a screen with positive gain.
paradigm 09-21-08, 11:50 PM third picture looks over-saturated too me but it's probably the camera. any other comments about the PJ? What PJ did you upgrade from?
Thanks.
timc878 09-22-08, 04:13 PM Hey guys,
Keeping in mind this is a 3000 dollar projector the sharpness is very, very good. Paradigm mentioned the colors looked over saturated, they are definitely vivid, but I think some of that is from the Speed Racer movie, all the colors seemed a little loud. The iris is definitely noticeable if you are looking for it but it works well and gives the projector exceptional black levels. The other comment I would like to make on this PJ is the noise, or lack thereof. This is the quietest PJ I have ever NOT heard. It is so quiet that when I turn off the unit I have to check the light to make sure it turned off. Last year I came very close to buying an RS1 and I am glad I waited. Sony has definitely hit a home run with this projector. If JVC releases the RS10 at 5k it better offer something significant over the RS1x or they are going to have some serious competition.
Oh and someone asked about screen and setup. I upgraded from a Optoma HD80 and I am using a 100 inch Stewart Firehawk screen. I will post some pics later.
Sonic Circle 09-23-08, 02:47 AM Hi Tim, thanks for your impressions.
So you upgraded from the HD80. How do they compare to eachother? Since I've been following the HD80 for a while, as my future first HT projector. Does the HW10 have the pop the HD80 has? And sharpness? How do the blacks compare?
Very interested in reading more impressions and more pics. Thanks.
hemster 09-23-08, 03:37 AM Hi Tim,
Nice to see Tampa/Clearwater represented here!
Does this projector do vertical stretch for a 2.35 CIH setup? Also, please post pics of how you have it mounted when you get a chance.
Thanks,
~hemster

Actually there is not much to compare. The Sony if much much sharper, has better color, more pop, deeper blacks and is much quieter than the HD80. Also throw in the vertical and horizontal lens shift and you have a far superior PJ.
As far as I know the HW10 wont do strech for 2.35 but since I dont have a 2.35 screen I have messed with it.

According to Jason's review, it looks like his unit had damn-near accurate colour right out of the box!

stainless-steel 09-23-08, 12:45 PM Thanks for your feedback Tim.
Have you seen the RS1 in action in order to make the comparison with the HW10, or is it speculation?
I had my eye on the RS1 as well and have been somewhat surprised by the praise heaped on the HW10, it seems to have leapfrogged the VW40 and is knocking in on the door of the '60 based on some of the good things I've seen said.
If I can get most of the RS1's performance from the HW10 for <3k$ I'll use the money saved on a DVDO Edge and a CIH set-up and smile all the way to the bank.
I've a suspicion we'll see something new in the way of illumination technology at next year's CEDIA. I'm loathe to spend a fortune on a JVC based CIH set-up this year if the HW10 can act as a stop-gap 'til we see laser/LED illumination (fingers crossed) next year.
Stainless.

Yes, I have seen the RS1 several times and in my opinion the HW10 is every bit as good, in fact I like it better (colors). I also feel the same way you do on the PJ values to me its not worth spending 8k for a PJ that within two years is worth 2k. I would rather buy the cheaper PJs and upgrade more frequently especially with the increasing quality of the "entry level" PJs.
Jason Turk 09-24-08, 12:22 PM Correct the HW10 out of the box is darn close. Plus, it can be adjusted to get "perfect" colors.
Congrats!
stainless-steel 09-24-08, 12:53 PM So to summarise, in comparison to the RS1 the HW10 is:
- comparable in black level, although DI assisted.
- has reasonably accurate colours out of the box, and the ability to be calibrated to a better standard than the RS1.
- is quieter
- has comparable brightness
- has out of the box greyscale like a ski ramp, but achieves good results when calibrated
And we should be posting in the sub $3k forum now.
Sounds promising to me...

Jason, I am interested in HW10. How can it be adjusted for "perfect" colors? I thought that Sony does not have a true CMS but a color replacement system (Real Color Processing). Is there something in service menu that can be used instead of RCP or is RCP in HW10 different from previous Sony FPs?
Thanks.
