Not marked HD in my guide...

Then again the Comcast guide is notoriously wrong when it comes to HD content.

I usually don't watch the Emmys, probably because I'm not a big fan of award shows generally, and consider it less of a time drain to wait until midnight and see the list of winners, and whatever few highlights there were. But now that you've been kind enough to list the team of 'Hosts' all I can say is Wow, that's quite a list of third bananas the Emmys managed to put together without any expense.

I've met Heidi Klum already, so the only one who'd be of any interest anyway is covered. ;)

Looks and sounds great. Many of the same technical folks (not surprisingly) that did the DNC. Show is already boring though. 5.1 music mix is very punchy. PQ looks good though there might be some very very slight filtering going on, but not enough to really stand out. Picture looks very much (not surprisingly) like the Oscars. Louis J. Horvitz wins another Emmy while directing the show. This has to be number five or six for him.

Very great work, ABC!!! It's nice to see the new HD show promos.

Excellent PQ (though here in Jax we are getting a signal breakup every so often).

Glad I DVR this thing.

Not in HD on KOMO via Comcast in the Seattle area. Unsurprising -- seems like KOMO has problems almost every time I try to watch an HD program. Either it's not in HD at all, or the audio is messed up...

Horrid breakups all night on KDNL-St. Louis through D*. No other problems with HD locals from D*, and local commercials had issues too.

Excellent production, even ended on time.

Why, because it ended on time?

What a disaster the Reality Host thing tuned out to be. Waste of good airtime and total comedic timing buzz kill.

This show was like sitting at a multi-course meal-- with the waiters taking the plates away while we're still enjoying the food. I know they have to keep it moving along but this was too pushy.

Thank god there was a great Yankees game to watch tonight. Talk about a great production-- now that was spectacular!

I laughed even harder when it went to Probst. I really hoped Howie would win, but I was expecting it to be Seacrest, just because he is Seacrest and he wins/does everything. Probst would be a good choice, if this were the 2000 Primetime Emmys. But 2008...not so much. I think it's time for Survivor to join the list of the deceased...

I sent this into KOMO's comments email box. I think it is about damn time we let the stations know we care about this stuff.

Please register my dissatisfaction with KOMO's Emmy Awards HD Broadcast

It is ironic that the first time television’s award program for excellence in television programming is shown in high definition that KOMO failed to show it in high definition until one hour into the broadcast. That is hardly excellence on the part of KOMO TV as an ABC affiliate.

The program was recorded for delayed broadcast, so there can hardly be any excuse for this.

Viewers have been investing thousands of dollars into high definition televisions, and look forward to viewing event programming such as the Emmys and the Oscars in high definition. It is a disappointment and a poor reflection on the local network affiliate when such programs are not broadcast in high definition, when they are available in high definition on the national network.

Sincerely,

ja2bk

Of course you wouldn't be aware of this as a viewer, but there was a technical problem which was not KOMO's fault (No, not ABC's fault either). It was not recorded by KOMO. It was recorded by ABC and fed out to the West Coast live to air. If you knew the nature of the situation, you would understand how harsh you were on them by saying there was no excuse. This was not a "forgot to 'flip the switch' situation".

Sometimes I think you guys forget that there are things that can go wrong with equipment and the hard work somebody is putting in to get the HD feed back up. The fact that viewer appetite for HD is increasing is not lost on most who work at these stations.

The show was terrible. I agree that the Reality Hosts were not funny (recall how great Conan O'Brien was as host?). The picture quality was soft. And who directed this show??? Not showing the nominees when their names were announced is unforgivable for an award show.

I don't really see how Howie was in this category, since Deal or No Deal is a game show, not a reality show, IMHO. All of the other shows invoved a lot of contestants who are eliminated one at a time based on some competitive skills contest, and subsequent evaluation and perhaps a vote by the viewers.

DOND involves one contestant trying to maximize his dollar winnings by weighing the banker's offer vs the values in the remaining suitcases. It doesn't fit with the other shows.

Anyway, the best of these hosts is Phil Keogan who hosts traditional best reality show The Amazing Race, and he wasn't even nominated.

The picture quality was soft.

I'll second that. I was extremely disappointed with the video quality, but it affected not only the program itself, but also the commercials. The whole feed was just plain SOFT. I've seen that new Apple Nano commercial a bunch of times (on other networks) and it always looks so sharp that my eyes nearly pop out of my head -- on ABC tonight, it was darned near SD. I checked it on two different affiliates, and both looked identically bad.

Now, for those that had no problem with the PQ, so far, the two complaints are from people in the West, so it is entirely possible that this was confined to that feed. It appears to be nothing new though -- in some of the West Coast local threads, people have been complaining about ABC HD being soft for a couple of weeks. If anyone who got the East feed can supply a couple of screen caps, it would be interesting to see what that looks like vs. what we got out West.

Can you elaborate on the nature of the problem? In other cities on the West Coast (mine included), the entire show was in HD (though as I said in the message above, it was poor HD). Is Seattle getting a different feed?

No, it appears Seattle has a cra**y ABC affiliate. They are the largest market still showing Wheel and Jeopardy in SD. I think SeattleAl would agree with me. WJLA probably a close second here.

No, Seattle was not getting a different feed. They had trouble pulling in the HD feed due to an equipment problem... two problems actually. They overcame one problem which got it back up when they did. The other is to be resolved.

I don't think you realize there are many forces that can keep a station from being able to offer those programs in HD. Time and time again it has been explained on here. Not all stations are floating in $$ as some may think.

I didn't watch the show because I had lost all respect for the Emmy Awards. This morning when I reviewed the list of winners, however, I was pleasantly surprised. I thought the 3 wins each for 30 Rock and John Adams were well deserved, as were Recount's and Glenn Close's victories. Will wonders never cease!

Since this was the first, and Jeff was the first reality host to become a star in the US, I knew he would win it.

Though I still don't get how they define this category. Deal is a game show and not reality competition.

And Phil definitely got overlooked.

Congrats FilmMixer!

As far as the show, I have to say I must agree with Mr. Kimmel if he told those guys the "nothing" bit would not work, because IMO, it did not work.

It was good production and they did finish on time. I kept hearing people talk about how, they cut my bit sine we are long, so I guess they said we are ghoing to finish by 11:00 no matter what happens.

I meant the 3 major awards, best show, best actor, or best actress, which I assumed would be clear from the context of my post because I said in my post that I have little regard for the Emmy Awards. The IMDb didn't care much more than I did, as the only categories they listed in addition to the Big Three were best supporting actor and actress:

Even re-reading your post it wasn't clear at all that you were only speaking about the "3 major" awards.. sorry. :)

I might have made myself clearer. Anyway, congrats on your award, the last thing I want to do is minimize it. It's a signal achievement. If I had been a little less obtuse and defensive, and a bit more sensitive, I might have handled it better. :) This year’s Emmy Awards went a long way to rehabilitating the organization’s reputation in my estimation.

I watched the opening 15 mins from a live Toronto feed and the HD PQ was exceptional. With the delayed Seattle feed, the first hour was SD and the PQ of the remaining HD broadcast was indeed soft as were the commercials.
