I just swapped my older Yamaha HTR-5590 for the brand new RX-V663. My PS3 looks fantastic via HDMI. However, my Dish Network 622 does not. I was using component video(straight to TV) and optical audio to my old receiver and got the new receiver to use HDMI from the 622. Everything just looks bland and almost faded. The once bright blue guide is now a faded blue almost gray guide. The pic quality is still good but the colors just seem dull. Nothing vibrant and not close to what I was getting using component out straight to my Panny plasma. Anyone using this combo? Is there maybe a limitation on the Dish's hdmi out? Thanks for any help.

I'm not using the same combo, but I did notice a bit of a difference on the 622 from component to HDMI with my frienemy HK254.

Your display most likely will have completely different setup for HDMI than it does for component, and remembers different settings for each. I use HDMI from the Dish 622 with no problems.

Try swapping the Dish Network 622 STB for another one.

Well I tried running HDMI straight from the 622 to the TV and no change. It still does not look as good as component straight from 622 to TV. So I tried to run component from the 622 to the Yamaha and then pass it all via HDMI to the TV. This was about the same pic as running HDMI from the 622. To me, it appears that the HDMI out from the 622 and running component thru the Yamaha give the same pic result. Anyone that has any thoughts please let me know. I am starting to think I bought a new receiver for nothing now.

Oh and all the settings on my TV are the same for component and hdmi.

Repeating myself:
You monitor should have completely different setup for each input, particularly HDMI vs analog. How this is configured depends on the monitor, most most newer ones also have different setup for each of the HDMI imputs and for each of the analog inputs.
It's certainly not unexpected that you would need to do separate calibration for component vs HDMI inputs. But unless you do the setup on the HDMI input, you are running at factory default settings.

The 622 does have a couple setup items that impact the output over HDMI, but mainly you simply need to complete a setup for the HDMI input on your monitor.

It's never a good idea to use an inexpensive AVR for converting analog to digital video. If you have component input to the AVR, then pass it as component output to your monitor. That said, the 622 should be sending a good image over HDMI that is very comparable to the component image. With appropriate monitor setup, the 2 should be very hard to distinguish.

I think I understand what you are saying. However, my Panny plasma has only 1 HDMI input. I was running the 622 and my PS3 via HDMI to the Yamaha AVR, then a single HDMI to the single input on the TV. PS3 looks fantastic, 622 not so much. Also, I checked and double checked every setting on my TV for component and HDMI and every setting is identical. Is there something I am not understanding?

One last thing you said, if I need to pass component from the 622 to the AVR and then component to the TV, why do that? Why not just go straight from 622 to TV. One of my big reasons for getting the new AVR was to allow access to hdmi from my 622 to the TV with only one hdmi input on the TV.

Well I can assure you many many times, component will beat HDMI. This is reality -vs- paper facts. I'd explor this with a Blu-ray player further if I were you.

Well they shouldn't be the exact same settings, try tweaking the HDMI settings to your liking. Also maybe you just like the brighter/whiter look of component vs the darker (actually better contrast) picture of HDMI

I understand. This may not be a black and white solution issue and may be more of getting picture quality whatever connection I have to use.

It's not impossible that your 622 is messed up. All I can tell you is that the component and HDMI output from my own 622 is very comparable. The main reasons for passing component through your 663 to the monitor would be for switching purposes, having the OSD available on component, and of course if you wanted to compare the analog image to the up-converted HDMI image.

That would be entirely up to your monitor, and the opposite could easily be true on many monitors.

This morning, I had the component and HDMI hooked up from the 622 so I could hit one button on my remote and cycle between the 2. There is a huge difference to me. It is such a difference that I can not accept anything less than the signal I am getting from component. I am going to do some more trial and error tonight to see if I can come up with anything.
