View Full Version : Scenes to test 1080p/24?
jkcheng122 09-22-08, 11:47 AM i'm getting ready to purchase a Panasonic TH-50PZ800U plasma (soon as i can find a good deal with stock).
i'd like to know if you guys know of any particular scenes i can use to test between 2:3 pulldown and 24p playback. one of the reasons being the infamous flicker the panny 800U and 850U have while in 24p mode.
MSmith83 09-22-08, 11:52 AM Pretty much any smooth camera pan should easily reveal the difference.

Pretty easy to spot the difference between 24 and 60 on that shot. You can also try the end credits (not just of 'Batman Begins', but any movie). 24 will look a little smoother than 60.

Haroon Malik 09-22-08, 01:30 PM Try the Mission Impossible III chapter of the Vatican where the stairs are shown.
You could also check out the legs when they step out of the Lamborghini as an alternative! :p
tyrell3000 09-22-08, 01:43 PM The scene in Mr. & Mrs. Smith where Angelina and Kerry Washington are climbling the mountain.
jkcheng122 09-22-08, 04:41 PM thanks guys. have all those in my collection too =)

That would not work to test 24fps, because you have to pause, and watch the legs.;)

there was only one leg iirc, but yeah, that shot would get paused.

Gotcha. When you first experience these movies without cadence judder, you will likely get an almost immediate sense of added smoothness that will be confirmed by doing a comparison. When I was curious, I just put on a random action movie during an action sequence and it was sufficient for demonstrating the difference.
As for your particular display's 48Hz refresh flicker, you will want to use bright scenes in order to determine how bad it looks to you.
If you've got access to the Planet Earth blu-ray set, right at the 2nd chapter of the "shallow seas" episode is a flyover over some water that'll judder badly on a 24fps-incapable set. There's plenty others in that set but that one's very easy to get to. If you've got Ratatouille, the scene about a fourth through the film where the rat climbs onto a roof and there's a pan over Paris. No Country for Old Men: during the intro there's a shot where the camera pans over some scenery and onto a cop shoving the bad guy into a cop car.
edit: that scene is actually on the "shallow seas" episode
