Or do they have to be front firing? My cabinets are 'media closets' with louvered bi fold doors. thanks!
Thanks!

Bad idea. Goes against all acoustic principals.

Are Forward firing subs ok in a closet? I really don't have that much of an alternative.
here's a pic that shows the current layout, except to the left in the picture is now another leather sofa. It leaves no room for a sub in that corner. I guess I could move my kids train table but I'm not sure about the WAF on having exposed subs.
I guess the other option is to put the electronics in the media cabinets, but I am not sure the Luxman m117 will fit. The cabinets have some weird 45deg angles in them as you can see. Plus then I have to deal with heat and but some kind of IR / remote manager.
And before you ask, no I did not select the wallpaper ;> It will go soon. I guess at that point I could redesign the room, do some drywall. I really don't want to do that tho as in a year or so I will do the room totally and add the projector/screen in front of the plasma for movies and big shews.

Anyway, I would really like to put he subs in the closets. This pic is really bad I know but the cabinets are a matching pair.

I wouldn't have a clue, but you will probably hear alot about how bad an idea it is. But, myself, I would get a down firing sub since the driver would be less likely to get bumped and damaged (kids?). As far as which one is better sounding, that would probably be a personal opinion.
If you are thinking of adding a sub, ask the sub manufacturer what they recommend and go from there. Try it in the closet and when you do over the room, maybe think about bringing the sub out? Or go IB?

That room is begging for an IB setup... I don't know if it's feasible or not but it may be something to look into.

I think I know what you mean, the recessed area where the plasma is, was presumably made that way to hold a massive rear projection. Now it is obsolete and I should drywall in the space and have the speakers and subs in that space hidden by a wall? I would leave a slight recess for the projection screen to clear the plasma?

We do have a 2 year old. So far he does not touch the electronics, but I can forsee a day not too far off when that will happen. There is a small sub, JBL I think, maybe Yamaha, in the left closet, and it works ok, but I don't get the low freq I should for movies. I want to get something along the lines of an svs or hsu etc, perhaps 2, should wifey allow. Christmas is coming. I can do whatever I want in the room really since it is dedicated home theater. Price is an object however.

Oh. I see...except this is on the 2nd story, no room in the 'attic'. Plus, that looks like to much work.

Well it’s got to come of the closest some time.:D

I see one get some racks in the closest and place the equipment inside it then move the rack that’s placed between the towers and place the centre thou you should have matching tower because you’ve got no idea what quality your missing in the centre channel.

Move the sub and place it in the front between the towers easy because that is where the sub belongs.

You can put a front firing, front ported sub recessed into your closet.

or

build the IB using the closet as the box for it. It would be simply amazing, less then the cost of one PB13 but peforms better then 4 PB13s!!!

Thanks for the response all. I totally get the IB thing tho I will have to research and ask more questions. I have no skills or power tools, (I know chicks like guys with skillz but I'm already hitched no biggie). My neighbor has every power tool known to man and works with wood for a hobby, or so his wife tells me.;)
I agree with our mate from Bournemouth that I should move the electronics to one closet and will, as the boy gets older his curious hands will be all over the equipment. There are already racks in the closets so it's just a matter of wiring.
What I don't understand JBLsound is what you mean here, but you may have had two too many pints :):

What quality am I missing in the center? Its pretty good, a CSi6 polk, pretty huge, powered by a bridged 200w/ch putting out ~700w a bit overkill but it is awesome. My towers hare polk rti12s and are powered off an anthem mc2. Sure there are better but at what cost... Do you mean that because the stand is between the towers I am losing imaging or something? If so I agree, once I move the electronics into the closet (hey one goes in the other goes out nudge nudge wink wink say no more) and get a stand (or even mount the center above the plasma, my 2 channel will sound better...or do you mean something else? Anyway all, thx for the advice and I'm glad to share your addiction and glad to have found this forum for us pseudo audiophiles. Even more glad my wifey understands...she totally gets it when the guests freak out over the spl. In home theater, no substitute for wattage right? We watched Doomsday the other night and everyone was in awe...my buds say they no longer consider their home theaters to be any good. they are all moving or going shopping. I am single handedly boosting the CE economy. ;)
I will research the IB thing, no rush as I am happy for a while, but Christmas is coming...

Wow, just re-read this and it is a long post. Sorry., went mtn biking with a bud tonite, stopped for wings and beer, then came home and had a few. Wife is upstairs right now watching the sex and the city movie with her girlfriends, my buddy went home and I am on the lanai with the laptop listening to milesD having my last (i promise) gin and tonic. I have keyboard diarhea lol.
It's just...I love home theater sooooo much ;>
