Hello,
I am looking for advice for connecting a new HDTV reciever to a Samsung 6 series LCD display. I am curently using an old Pioneer Elite VSX-45 receiver (NO HDMI SWITCHING). How should I approach connecting the SAT box? Should I use the component switching and digital audio connections that the receiver has available? Or, should I connect an HDMI cable directly from the cable box to the display and the digital audio connection from the cable box to the receiver?
I relaize that a new receiver would be the best solution but I like the one that I have.
Try both.
Use what looks best and provides convenience.

thank you,
visually, from the standpoint that HDMI is digital and component is analog, how significant are the differences supposed to be?
It depends...
Some have reported:
1) no difference
2) HDMI better
3) component better
Theoretically, HDMI should be optimal. But, perception and quality of the components can prove differently.
If you're concerned about the price of a HDMI and possibly not likeing the results, try a cable from http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10240

I would connect an HDMI cable directly from the cable box to the display and the digital audio connection from the cable box to the receiver? Also the fewer connections generally the better picture quality.

"Also the fewer connections generally the better picture quality."
With digital, unless you're dropping data somewhere, shouldn't make a difference...

I agree, the fewer connections the better but with digital there should be no loss.
