I'm trying to watch DVDs on my PS2, but it's impossible because no matter what I always get bars on my HDTV. In the settings are, I switched it to 16 x 9, but that has no alteration in how my PS2 plays DVDs. I can set it to 4 x 3, Full or 16 x 9 and it all looks the same. If the movie is shot in scope, then I'm in real trouble... I may as well be watching on a really long 13 inch TV.
The only thing I can figure out is when I press select when playing a DVD and go to setup, it still says I'm in 4x3 Letter Box and Progressive is off. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

you may have to force a horizontal stretch (called h-fill on my panasonic) on your tv?

I guess you have to hit stop twice before you can switch anything. For some reason, my PS2 book is gone, but I still have the box.

Do you have a component connection? That is the only way to get HD from a ps2. And the ps2 is not that great a dvd player. Better to get a sub 100$ upscaling player or better yet, a ps3. It upscales and plays blu ray. Rent from netflix and enjoy.

When you say "...In the settings are, I switched it to 16 x 9...", do you mean in the HDTV settings?
Try taking out any dvd/game cd from the PS2, then go into the PS2 settings and switch from 4X3 to 16X9. Are you using a component dongle from your PS2 to the TV? This way you'll get the best picture.
Good luck and welcome to the forums!

Progressive will only work if you have component cables hooked up, I believe. Or am I wrong about that? Can composite cables pass a progressive signal?
Anyhow, I can't think of why the 16x9 setting won't take. It sounds like you are familiar with Aspect Ratios since you mentioned scope movies. Am I right in that assumption?
And by the way, what is PS2??????!!!!!?????? When did they make those?
