I've connected a the Sony upconverting DVD player to the Onkyo receiver via HDMI only (the settings in the DVD player are for dolby surround). Except for the subwoofer, the 5 in 5.1 audio comes out just fine. The video is connected to the Westinghouse 42 in LCD via HDMI as well. And there is no video except for a blip right away, then fuzz and the LCD continually tries to detect the source. If I connect the DVD player directly to the TV, everything is fine. I've checked that the HDMI cables are good. I've also tried the Yamaha receiver and basically the same thing happens, but the video actually comes up for a couple seconds then out for a couple seconds. Also, with the Yamaha, the sound goes in and out. I'm not sure what to do. I'm about to return everything and forget about a home theater. Please help!

Also, if I set the Yamaha to just pass the HDMI signal, it works fine, but I loose the audio processing for 5.1 surround sound. I know I could go through component, but I really wanted 1080p video and 5.1 sound though HDMI, maybe this is impossible with these devices. They all say they can do it.

Receivers that I've tried: Onkyo TX-SR606 or Yamaha HTR-6140
TV: Westinghouse VK-42F240S
Upconverting DVD player: Sony DVP-NS601H

If you list your component model #'s someone could probably point you in the right direction.

See thread "Westinghouse 42F240S ... " under LCD displays.

Try this..

unplug all equipment for an extended period of time.

Power display up first and on the correct HDMI input, then power up the AVR and once again choose the correct HDMI input, then power up the source.

This so far, seems to routinely fix HDMI issues for me when I do it for people. HDMI is picky about the HDCP negotiation.

I tried that, and still no luck. I returned the Westinghouse and got a Philips 42TA648BX, and everything works just fine. The problem is that the Westinghouse has a firmware issue where, in order to display HDMI video, Westinghouse requires an HDMI audio handshake first. So if you just want video on this TV, and sound out of your receiver, you're out of luck. But I bet they will make a firmware fix pretty fast. I'm talking to the "corporate engineering" dept today and I'll push for that because it is a nice TV if it would work with HDMI.

Thanks for posting back the resolution.... That will probably help many a Westy owner if they bother to do a search. :)

I have a SONY KDL 40XBR and if I hook my DVD player HDMI output to the TV, I get a picture but no audio. If I use component audio and video I don't have this problem. Anyone know how I can get audio through the HDMI input?
