I have an external harddrive with some avi files connected to the PS3 via USB. The PS3 recognizes and it's able to play many of them. The others, it just says that they are unsupported. What could be the problem? any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

could be older version of DivX, size, resolution, codec, audio bitrate.... many things. The PS3 plays many files, but you'll always come across one or two that the data says "corrupted" or the "file is unsupported"

Is there a way to play these unsupported files?

Convert them to a format that is known to work. I use PS3 Video 9. It's free:

Yeah, I just watch them on the PC/MAC instead of doing the whole conversion.
