A friend asked my help in figuring out the best projector for his church to buy. There is poor light control, so it needs to be bright. I'm not sure about the screen size and distance.

There's a proposal from a local installer that includes:

Christie LX500 5000 lumen projector $4865
Christie lens 2570
Analog Way Quattro Vue scaler/switcher 4110
Easy User Interface 735

plus incidentals etc
plus design/installation 2550

for a total of $18,000.

Supposedly the cables are already in place - although I don't know if they include HDMI.

A guy has to make a buck but this seems awfully high.

What do you think of that choice of projector and components? Would a JVC or Sony be bright enough? Is a scaler really necessary for a modern digital projector?

I appreciate your help and suggestions, and your reward will be in heaven.

I can use all the help I can to get up there :) so... There is a used Infocus 333 (variation on the Infocus 777) here that is a 3 chip DLP light cannon. Needs a new bulb, be an inexpensive way to get a bright PJ, depending on your screen requirements. In any case depending on what you need it for, I'd expect a church PJ would be fine as a 720p unit. Unless they want to watch Desperate Housewives in maximum HD glory ;).

We could help your cause much better if we knew the ballpark screen size and what the churchgoers are going to watch.

Read this short thread, which has info on some of the best bets in bright business projectors that can be used for home theater:

Why not pray for Jesus/God to project the wanted images from heaven via a beam of sunlight? I mean is that too much to ask, being they're all powerful and your friend is trying to spread their word? :D

So you just suggested that a Godfearing person pray to God, asking that he send video images down from Heaven for the congregation to view? Good call Dysfunction! I can't see anything in that post that would offend anyone...

Why would anyone fear God, he's a loving God...isn't he? I mean they are doing his bidding, why can't he help out a little?

No clue. I've never met him.

The guy came here to ask for help with projection. His post did not touch on religion beyond mentioning this is for a church (and the bit about the reward).

Why don't you cut him some slack and leave the sarcasm about divine projection out of it.

cwilson - as mentioned, we need to know screen size, viewing distance, and the purpose to which the projector would be put. The prices on the equipment itself are actually decent, but I am not sure why they will need a $4K+ scaler switcher. Other projection options to look at are some of the bright Sanyo units, Panasonic's 5000 series.

However, the suggestions change if these are largely for a "cinema night" type situation. In that case, the 777 would be really good. So what are the relevant facts?

The Bible does say the following:

"Through God, all things are possible."

Hey, if the Bible says it, it must be true. ;)

Here are additional details for you heathens.

The existing projector, which is getting flakey and is too noisy, is a Proxima Pro AV 9320. The screen size is 10' x 7', and the distance from projector to screen is 50 feet. It will be used mostly for Powerpoint and similar presentations, with some video. So I think a 720 projector would be fine, but it needs to be at least as bright as their current unit and not as noisy.

Thanks.

You're in luck. There just happens to be a trade show specific for the church venues. It will be in Houston, TX on Nov. 6-7. Here's the website;
wfxweb.com/houston/index.html

Christie will be in booth 634. Many others will be exhibiting as well. If you can wait until then and can travel to the trade show you might pick up a bargain.

If you put 50 feet and 5000 lumens into the search criteria at projectorcentral.com, you will see that three of the six projectors that come up are the Panasonics that DIY Guy mentioned.
