As much as I like Sony and have told myself that they will be my strategic platform for gaming when games are cross platform, I just don't understand some of the things they do.

They decide to use Bluetooth as the wireless standard for their controllers and remote, yet to date, I don't believe there is anything else that has been released for the PS3 that is Bluetooth enabled.

Just picked up the Buzz TV game and it seems that it requires you to plug in an USB device. Why? Why could the 4 Buzz controllers not work using Bluetooth? For crying out loud, you can find BT headsets for under $10 so it doesn't seem like the components are expensive. Then there is the fact that when playing multiplayer games like Lego Batman, only one profile can be active at once? Why? Heck the PS3 doesn't even support multiple mics when playing multiplayer!

It's these little things that make some of the other competitors of hardware better in their decision making. I love my PS3 and there is tons of stuff it does better than the competition, but why can't Sony sometimes take a look at the little stuff.

Given that I have multiple PS3's, it would be nice if you can move the devices from one place to another without having to carry the "dongle" with you.

I guess I might be raving because I can't find the "dongle" for the MadCatz add-on keyboard that I purchased a while back.

Hoping that Sony's add-on keyboard works via BT.

I have a Logitech BT keyboard and mouse that work great.

I have the same keyboard. It does work great!

One advantage to the dongles is actually relevant to those of us with 2 or more PS3's. I would rather move the dongle than have to re-register BT devices every time I went to the other system.

I do see your point though in regards to wondering why they don't use BT more.

There are tons of BT devices.. remotes, headsets, keyboards, mice...

Isn't Buzz TV made by a 3rd party? There are plenty of issues with this console, but I'm not sure this is one of them.

Sony is the publisher, not the producer.

Relentless Software are the architects behind the game.

I just don't understand some of the things they do.

1. Such as why updates are such a pain in the ass to install with 8x as many button presses required in comparison to the xbox 360. Do I really need 8 pages of screens to click through to install an update? On the PS3 yes, the 360 no.
2. GT5, why in the hell must one click through a disclaimer every time you launch the game? Click through the damn thing once and remember the friggin' setting.

Sony is brain dead when it comes to usability and the little things. When you''re getting schooled by Microsoft in usability, something is seriously wrong!

Funny enough, I am opposite, I think it is easier to register each time, but that maybe because I am used to that system.

It just boggles my mind why Sony or 3rd parties aren't using BT when it is there.

I guess what I meant is that why aren't Sony or 3rd party that are releasing devices for the PS3 using BT.

An example would be Rock Band, Guitar Hero, Logitech Wireless Wheel, Madcatz keyboard, Buzz Quiz TV.... These are devices that are specific to the PS3, yet you need a dongle? Why is no one using BT is what really is getting me curious? Is it less reliable, or is it more expensive to implement in 3rd party devices?

In order to use Bluetooth in a device you have to be a member of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group. Not sure what the membership fees are but that may be a reason some of the smaller developers don't use it. Curious that SONY wouldn't pony up though since something like BUZZ is essentially a first party game/exclusive/however you want to define it.

That's one possibility.

Do the buzz wireless controllers use IR? IR is dead cheap to implement. MUCH cheaper than bluetooth or other wireless techs. And I suspect cost is a factor when you have to bundle 4 remotes with a game in a $60 package.

IR does have its advantages. :)

I could be wrong but I suspect the wireless Buzz controllers work for the PS2 as well, you can buy them separately

Yes, its Bluetooth, but be prepared to plop down a whopping $50 buck for it.
I'd rather buy the mentioned BT keyboard from Logitech.

Plus, you only have 7 devices available, so even with one PS3 you'd have to do some re-registering if you have enough bluetooth devices registered already.

I haven't tested this, but I think you can have as many bluetooth devices registered with a PS3 as you want (well, maybe there is some limit), but you can only have 7 attached and on simultaneously.

The controlles I believe use RF and they are compatible with the PS2.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Wouldn't you have to de-register (or detach) a device to make room for a buzzer?

I really hope that in the next generation they work out having many devices "connected" simultaneously (wired or wireless), with no management needed. Maybe the way it would work is, whatever controller starts a game becomes port 1 for that game.

Obviously, she needed new pants. So, she cleaved them in half and hollowed out their innards. First one was too big, so she had to fit 2 more smaller sizes to get them to fit right.

To be on topic I stopped trying to understand Sony when they failed to deliver on some of those PS2 promises like Netscape browser and AOL client (both were very popular back then) and this just made more proof when they announced their price tag along with NOT packing in an HD connection/cable for their HD system or the most standard of all standard components, an IR... oh, then when removed PS2 BC... ya that one irked the crap out of me. They aren't all THAT bad though, the system is great... it's just Sony's own practices that make me go 'huh?'

ranting? maybe... legitimate complaints? of course!

You knew the model you bought didn't have PS2 BC before you made the purchase. It's the equivilent of me complaining that I can't fit 10 people in my IS300.

But anyways, yeah, I guess Bluetooth was an interesting choice but it is good for Sony who makes a lot of hardware (cameras, phones, etc) and a better choice than IR in a lot of respects if you think about it, because it can used for many other things other than just controllers. I suppose Sony thought that through before they decided to use it.

I can see why Sony wanted to use BT but to be honest would it have been hard to offer maybe a standard IR receiver on the system? Heck they eventually did it with the PS2 so I really don't see the reason for it's exclusion. Cost can't be it because the system was already pricey at launch I doubt a little IR sensor would have increased cost any. It really doesn't make sense to me as they promote the PS3 as a BD player for the media room yet don't offer you a way to interface with standard IR based RF control systems (3rd party hacks notwithstanding). This even excludes their own brand of universal remotes. Just a somewhat minor annoyance.
