View Full Version : Down vs Front Firing: front wall effects

I'm juuusssttt on the teetering edge of considering a sub upgrade and am contemplating some different choices.

One question that has me concerned is that for my current setup I have my small sub along the front wall toed in facing the listening area about 6" off the front wall.

I have few/none choices but this configuration and it is on a hard wood floor. The rest of the room is 'treated' with a large floor rug, and 'normal' furnishings for a family HT room.

If I consider a down firing sub, how much radiation loss compared to a direct firing would I expect if it is also located on the front wall about 6" away.

It would seem that 1/2 of the radiated bass would 'hit' the front wall and possibly set up cancellation nodes with the wave front being directly radiated on the 'front' side of the sub going into the listening area when compared to a front firing sub.

Is this a 'non-issue'?
