i have a home theater projector, and an lcd.

is it possible to run a component to my lcd, and hdmi to my pj, or vise verse.

reason i am asking is sometime i just want to check ps3 on my lcd, and no drop the pj screen down.

do i just need to change the input on the ps3 when using either or, and if so, how will i even see what i am doing if no image is displayed. i am assuming it wont display an image from both outputs..at the same time..?????

thanks for any advice.

also anyone know of a place to get long component wire for the ps3, 25+'

I don't see a problem with that, the ps3 will detect what device is turned on and use that input .

Use an HDMI 2x1 splitter downstream from the PS3, and run HDMI to each device.

The PS3 will only detect the proper input if you hold down the power button to reset it each time you switch to the other display. I think that could work temporarily but would get tedious in the long run, so a splitter might do the job. However, from the comments I've been reading about splitters at Monoprice, there's no guarantee it will work. So, be ready to return it if that's the case. Make sure the other display is turned off, so it can complete the handshake.

Another possibility, though a bit expensive, is a distribution amplifier (like a 4x2 switcher) that can send HDMI to two displays at the same time.

nah man. You need a Distribution amp not a switcher, then both are active. A DA would be ideal. I have had the switch setup and it is annoying. Switchin the PS3 back and forht can be daunting . but a cheap DA

I did the exact thing you're looking at for a while. I had my RPTV hooked up via component -close to the PS3, and then the HDMI unit in a bedroom about 30 ft away.

You really will have two modes, component, and HDMI. When in component mode each time you start up, the PS3 will tell you and HDMI connection has been found, do you want to use. If you do not, click no, and you can use component. No big issue here.

If you click yes, the PS3 typically will autoscan and check what resolutions the HDMI unit will accept, and set to that resolution. The big issue is when you want to start up the component device again, you will need to hold the power button down until you restart in 480i, and then you will need to manually add in the resolutions you want, as the PS3 didn't autoscan for resolutions on component.

When I was only switching back and forth a few times a week, this wasn't too annoying, however when I was switch back and forth a couple of times a day, it got cumbersome.

I had my PS3 hooked up to my LCD via HDMI. I had it hooked up to my PJ via component.

I used the LCD a majority of the time, but when I wanted the projector, it was a simple switch under the video settings and it went right over. No problems.

That works too, but you'll have to remember to do that on the first display before switching to the second. That's easier than resetting though.

OT, but I wish Sony could add support for some kind of shortcuts in the XMB for frequently used commands. It would be great if you could, say, hold down L1 and L2 to do something.

I was a little confused on the DA/switcher thing. The 4x2 switcher would allow you to connect 4 HDMI devices to 2 displays, but only one display is active at a time. The DA is for when you need both simultaneously, but that doesn't sound like it will be the case here. So the switcher would be what to get.

but the simple 1x2 piece would work as a DA. no need to swithc both outputs are active for

I have a monoprice hdmi splitter. 2 tvs can be on displaying the same data. I sometimes have no audio on the hdmi. But other then that, no problems.

I had a monoprice hdmi splitter cable and returned it, had lots of handshake issues. What you want is a 4x2 powered switcher.

Re: "2 displays, 1 ps3. can it be done..???"

Well, it would have been possible out of the box had Sony just gone ahead with their original plan:

:p

Back on topic though do what others have said: use an HDMI splitter. They can be had for cheap and do as advertised.
