View Full Version : Best projector under $5000 AND under 16" width?
gsearles 09-24-08, 09:55 PM I'm looking for something to replace my trusty-but-aging Panasonic PT-AE900. I want something 1080P, either LCOS or LCD, but have a limited opening in the back of my theater for placement as you can see from the attached picture. I kind of assumed somehow that projectors would get smaller over time, but they haven't, and I really didn't have much more width to use anyhow for the opening from my projection/media stotage room into the theater.
Anyhow, I have exactly 15 and 3/4 inches of width as is, and could maybe cut an extra 1-2 inches out on one side if needed. I can cut towards the door, but not the other way, since there's a hallway right behind that wall.
I have researched a fair bit and it seems some (but not all) of the Sony models might work, but none of the new JVC or Panasonic models. Complicating matters is that many projector spec sheets make it hard to determine which dimension is depth vs. width sometimes. Any other strong contenters I should look into? Any good website resources for determinig projector sizes?

It looks like the new JVCs will come in at under 15" width. Maybe it would be worth it to stretch your budget a bit and get the RS20 rather than the RS10 if the AV Science "pre-order" price is good enough.
This website has specs:

Poochie 09-25-08, 04:06 PM The link for specs above is for the RS1 - so don't be surprised when those show an 18" width.
As mentioned above, the RS10/RS20 should be less than 15". The press release/brochure dated Sept 25th from JVC list the width at 14 3/8". One thing to consider, though, is that the new JVCs have the input connectors on the side.
I've been eyeing the width myself since I hang my current (13.6" wide, connectors on back) PJ from a wall-mounted shelf that has angle-brackets on the sides about 16" apart. In my case I could just lower the PJ using some extensions to clear the angle-brackets if need be, but ideally I'd rather not. From your picture Greg it doesn't look like you have quite that flexibility, but hopefully a JVC (w/connectors) would also fit.
Another consideration is where the airflow goes in, and out, of the PJ - I don't know how it works on the new JVCs as of yet. Given that you can cut an extra 1-2 inches it sounds like a "new" JVC will work though.
Hope this helps!
SIM2 D75 is 14 inches wide. It's a single-chip DLP (1080p). It falls between the D60 (too wide) and a D80E (also 14 inches but more expensive). You can probably pick one up for four K or less.
gsearles 09-25-08, 08:04 PM Oh wow, that JVC-RS10 might be just the ticket, looks great... (and narrow!) Have to read how this is expected tp compare to the RS1 (what I'd likely get now if not for the size...)
On the plus side, connectors on the side are actually fine, since I have room behind the wall on one side inside the projector room. Here's a better picture of my predicament...

Thanks for all the advice so far!

Right, the OP asked "Any good website resources for determining projector sizes?" and that was why I provided the link. It could have been to any projector, but I just happened to have that RS1 page bookmarked. The RS20 page did not include the dimensions, the last time I looked.
