View Full Version : PS3 Vibrating!

So i've had my PS3 since Feb 08, its the 40 gig model. It's in an open space with plenty of ventilation and it's worked perfectly up until tonight. I went to go watch a movie, and as soon as it started to read the disk my PS3 started to vibrate pretty badly. It was a loud bass like sound i could here and feel from across the room. I thought it was my speakers for a minute, but sure enough when i went over and put my hand on the PS3 i could definetly feel it vibrating. And it seems to only happen when reading a disk.

Has anyone ever experienced this before, or know why it may be doing this?

Perhaps the disk is cracked or warped. A slight imperfection of the disk can do that, especially when it is spinning fairly rapidly, just like an imbalanced tire.

Thank you for your response.
I think your right, because i tried another disk...then another...then another...and not one of them did that. Then just out of curiosity i put the first disk back in, and sure enough it was vibrating. There are no scratches on it, but giving it a closer look it does seem like it may be very slightly warped. It's a brand new movie that just came out Tuesday, but i received it from Netflix so it could of easily been damaged in transit or simply defective from the manufacturer. Regardless... i am very relieved, i'd hate to think my PS3 would be the culprit, especially considering how new it still is. Thank god, i'd hate to have to send it in to sony!!!

Thanks again.:)

Alot of rental discs can vibrate badly because the inner label they put on the spindle area. I've had a few come off in the 360 due to the heat too. Got all sticky

It's because the rumble patch for a game installed backwards, which causes the console to vibrate instead of the controller.

Seriously though, maybe a fan inside came loose? Do you hear any strange noises coming from it? Do you hear it when no disc is in the drive, like when playing a PSN game or demo?

No, as i stated above it only happens when the system is reading a disk, and only on that one movie i got from Netflix. All else seems to be fine, I've tried a bunch of movies and games from my collection and not one of them did this. I'm chalking it up to an isolated incident, if it happens again anytime soon on another movie, then i'll worry a bit.

Thanks for your response.:)

LOL Thats definetly not my PS3, i'd of thrown the thing through the wall had it blew up a disk on me. That's if the fragments of the disk or PS3 didn't get lodged into my neck and kill me! lol

Glad you found the problem. Now that you've isolated the culprit, you can rest easy! Relatively speaking, the PS3 is built like a tank & hopefully will serve you for years like the PS2 did for me. :)

just out of curiosity, is there a sticker on that rental?

Some rental Co's, and even netflix at one point put stickers on DVD's which is a big no-no. They throw off the weight and cause the disks to shake when spinning, which can ruin a DVD/BR player.

Netflix stopped the practice, but maybe some idiot did it to that one disk.

Otherwise, sounds like the disk is just warped. I'd let netflix know so it doesn't ruin someone else's player/ps3.

My first PS3 vibrated when patching Warhawk, returned it ASAP, probably just a bad hard drive, but w/n 30 days it is going back to the store no questions asked.

No, it didn't have a sticker on it, but the disk was definetly warped.
Anyways all is good now, i've watched a few movies since, and tried a bunch of others and have had no problems.
