I hope so. I love this movie. When I saw the trailer last year i thought it would be stupid. Then I rented it on HD-DVD and I didn't even care to fire it up. I'm sure glad I did. Biggest surprise this year so far for me.

I'll buy this from the UK if they don't announce a US release as well. It's just about the last remaining movie (along with Charlie & the Chocolate Factory) that will cause me to fire up the old HD DVD player.

Is this going to be a new transfer? I liked the movie but thought the HD DVD looked pretty weak overall.

does anyone know yet if this is going to be region free. I know several people who want this bluray, so if its region free, I'll be ordering several copies from Amazon UK to give to friends (I have a BD rom plus anydvd, so I don't really care, buy everyone else I know has PS3's)

This is out in the UK now. Has anyone picked it up yet? One review on Amazon UK said the pic quality wasn't very good. Is it region free? Brits, we wanna know! :)

Really? Mine looks absolutely stellar! So good that I probably won't even bother getting th BD...unless I hear it's even better.(Which I doubt.)

My copy shipped from the UK a few days ago. I hope to have it soon. It does look like it will have a lot more special features than the HD DVD, which I also own.

^ Please post impressions when you get this if you don't mind. I want this and I'm tired of waiting for Paramount US to release it. I'm gonna import if it's region free(Paramount usually is though) and the PQ is good.

I think the main complaint about the pq was that it was on the soft side. But, I also remember that it was filmed that way, so I wouldn't expect the Blu-ray to be any different. I like this movie, though, so I will buy it when it hits the stores.

Seriously doubt it. Most of the HD DVD of smaller titles have been ported.

I have it and I doubt it's a port, simply because the bitrate is so high. Looks sharper than the HD DVD as well,(which I ran along side for comparison), but not in a 'fake' sharpness kind of way. It's a lovely transfer. I dare say that the US disc will mirror the UK one, as it starts up with a PG-13 ratings logo before the movie.

Good to hear. I stand by my eyes and say the HD DVD was a poor-quality transfer/encode. Just because a film is shot "softer" doesn't mean detail is lacking, which Stardust was on HD DVD.

I have to fall on the side of Stardust being a great transfer. I've viewed the HD-DVD several times on my 106" screen@ 11' and found the transfer (along with most of my guests) to be very pleasing.

If the Blu-ray is better, then bring it on already!

I agreee. STARDUST looks terrific (and quite sharp) on HD-DVD. The only way I'd get the BD is if it is found to be drastically superior...something I have yet to find on BD (although I haven't seen every disc out there). I'll certainly rent it to hear the commentary track.

Why buy Stardust?? Inconceivable!

You clearly never want to go against a Sicilian when death is on the line, and you clearly want a tongue-firmly-planted-in-cheek, romantic fantasy done right, so get The Princess Bride. If you've [gasp!] never seen it, it's from director Rob Reiner and the incomparable screenwriter of many Hollywood gems like Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid, William Goldman.

For a catalog title, it even has a pretty darn good HD transfer as well...

And remember too:

"My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father. Prepare to die!"

"Anybody wanna peanut?"

"He's only mostly-dead."

"Let me put it this way. Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates?... Morons!"

"Tyrone, you know how much I love watching you work, but I've got my country's 500th anniversary to plan, my wedding to arrange, my wife to murder, and Guilder to frame for it; I'm swamped."

:D

What a helpful contribution to the thread--now go into every other thread and attempt to get the readers to buy Princess Bride instead. Do you get a nickel for every copy sold on Blu-ray?

:D

(Just kidding!)

I actually enjoy Princess Bride, but don't own it on Blu-ray yet--and I'm looking forward to getting my copy of Stardust from the UK in a few days. (Some may call it blasphemy, but I think I got more of a kick out of Robert DeNiro in this movie than Wallace Shawn in Princess Bride when I first saw it.) I am looking forward to the commentary track and other bonus features that weren't included on the HD DVD.

I think there is room enough for fans of both movies.

+1 on PQ

Anyone know if any of the SD supplements are PAL? I'm guessing not, but that's the only unknown keeping me from waiting on a U.S. release...

This is odd, Mexico got Stardust and Dumbo this week:

Odd because Mexico gets the same disc pressings as US and Canada, why not release them all over North America?

Prolly has to do with who owns the distribution rights in the given country.

This is one of the most entertaining fantasy movies I've ever seen and is on my top ten list of favorite movies. I am definitely going to look into this and buy it if it can be had for a good deal.

Prolly has to do with who owns the distribution rights in the given country. Not the case for these movies (and Disney would never let anyone else have control of their classics).

I agree, strange post. They are similar in tone, and that's about it.

Stardust was fun and looked great on HD-DVD, don't know if I would replace my copy with a blu-ray...

Ditto. Just watched it over the weekend and the HD-DVD is spectacular. Don't understand why one found it "soft". Sharp as a tack, great colors! Pfeiffer never looked so good (at least when she wasn't aged).

Stardust is coming on September 7th.

I've been watching my UK copy for a while now, but if you've been waiting for a domestic copy then Paramount has finally gotten around to putting it on the calendar.

Well it's about damn time! I've been waiting for this ever since it came out on HD-DVD. I resisted several attempts to buy it on red because the blu release was inevitable. It's a fantastic movie and caught me totally by surprise. I'm not even a fan of Gaiman or anything comic book, Starcraft, Dungeons and Dragons, and such.

I didn't even know it was out until I saw this on the shelf at Walmart over the weekend.

yeah i was surprised, Stardust really turned out to be quite good, too bad it flew semi-under the radar in theaters. It sort of is the PB for the 00's.

I already have the HD DVD, which didn't seem too bad though, so not sure if the blu is really worth it.
