View Full Version : Burnout Paradise Trophies are live - NOT RETROACTIVE
guitarlp 09-25-08, 05:23 AM The devs have stated many times they would definitely be retroactive... but not anymore:
"We had hoped to use this to retroactively award trophies, but we discovered during testing that this is not possible. You will therefore require a fresh game-save to receive trophies in Burnout Paradise. If you're familiar with PS3 trophies already, you'll recognise that this works in the same way as all other games that have added trophy support post-release."

Wow... that's all I have to say. They really screwed us over on this one. And they could have mentioned this weeks ago... but decided not to (most likely to keep their sales moving along and keeping people online).
I've been saying nothing but praise about Criterion for their support with free updates... but not telling us about this when they first realized they wouldn't be retroactive really bothers me.
KingShorty 09-25-08, 05:30 AM I just popped my disc in and there was no patch or anything.
As for having to play everything again.... boy I know some people are going to be pissed...!!!
guitarlp 09-25-08, 05:32 AM I just popped my disc in and there was no patch or anything.
I did the same... you need to delete your game save and start a new one if you want to unlock any of the trophies.
Criterion says the solution is to backup your gamesave to a memory card, create a new save and start from scratch to unlock the trophies, and the when you're done collecting trophies copy your old game save back to the PS3.
dogdoctor 09-25-08, 05:32 AM Holy crap....I don't have the game but that is going to piss a lot of people off. I suspect that this is sign to come for other games too (like BF:BC - trophies coming, but I bet they won't be retroactive either). Man that blows for the Burnout fans.

But I didn't get prompted to download a patch. Isn't that how it worked with Uncharted and Warhawk (to name 2 that had the same thing)?
guitarlp 09-25-08, 05:36 AM Well Incognito figured out how to do it with warhawk... so it's possible.
I'm pissed but I did enjoy completing everything 101%. What bugs me the most is that they obviously knew about this weeks ago but never told any of us until the patch went live.

I think you need to start from a fresh save file before it will download the update? Delete your game save (after backing it up) and try loading Burnout again. It should download the update after that.

Well, I am in no rush to get the trophies anyway. Not looking forward to having to complete everything again.
Boo Burnout, Boo Criterion...!
fcorona76 09-25-08, 07:59 AM So all of a sudden it's a lousy game, even after all of the free content they've added, because some people can't enhance their e-peen with some silly little trophies that only mean something in a virtual world?
God bless the internet.
wow,
I really feel for those who rushed to get everything completed before the patch.
I'm lucky I didn't invest too much time into the game. I only completed the races but wow, way to let a lot of people down Criterion.
so's your face 09-25-08, 08:07 AM wow, so this is what it feels like to get punched in the face... ;)

it's not all of a sudden a lousy game... but it is an incredibly lousy move to pull an "oh by the way they're not retro" the day it lands. that is weak with a side of weak, covered with weak sauce. :(
but nice job generalizing people's disappointment by spinning it to assume they're saying the game is lousy. God bless the internet, indeed.
PursuitGT 09-25-08, 08:10 AM The worst part is you know they have known about this for a while and just didn't want to tell anyone.
DJ Nupe 09-25-08, 08:17 AM After such excellent support for their game, Criterion has diffently dropped the ball on this one. I applaud them for there free additions to the game. But I am in no rush to get trophies for this game if I have to start all over again.
so's your face 09-25-08, 08:17 AM The worst part is you know they have known about this for a while and just didn't want to tell anyone.
it's an incredibly shady move in my opinion. yes, they didn't just turn it on last night and say, "oh no, they're not retro... people will be so disappointed"
of course they knew ahead of time, and i think someone pointed out in another thread that the ease of the trophies was a way to appease the faithful.. well, now we know why... no more 2 hour sessions trying to get the 20x boost, or the 40x multiplier. at least the trophies are easy so we should be happy, no?
definitely a kick in the teeth.
smastroyin 09-25-08, 08:19 AM Didn't Criterion basically guarantee that they would be retro? It's not like they just allowed rumors to float, they came out and said "because of the way we designed our save files, trophies will be retro." Why even say that?
Then again, I'm sure there is blame to toss Sony's way as well.
And I think part of the problem is that with a bazillion other great games coming out, why are people going to replay this one just for trophies? And also every save file is attached to a PSN so it's not like you can keep your complete game save so that you can go online with your platinum cars while slowly making your way through the trophies. At least if I understand correctly.
I think this is lame and they shouldn't have wasted the resources putting in the trophies.
PursuitGT 09-25-08, 08:20 AM I forget what some of the trophy's are but I'm assuming the last one was completing the game was it not? Which means you basically have to re do the entire game?
If it's something you could get in a day or two thats fine but if it means re-beating that game is ridiculous.
KingShorty 09-25-08, 08:22 AM I feel for you guys as well as for myself.
If I do choose to go through it, it'll be my third time completing everything (did it before, sold the game, deleted save, bought the game and did it again).
And what about Jimmyz, he's been working his butt off just to get everything in time for the trophy patch and now it won't matter.
This just really really sucks!

Yup, you HAVE to start from scratch with a new game save.

To be honest I wasn't really interested in trophies
it would have been cool but its not going to make me restart the game again
It might make it easier for me to complete the 490 because I will assume that some people will restart and will need to redo the challenges
with all things considered this is the only bad thing to come out of this game
and to me its nothing major
see you guys friday night

Wow!! Big time disappointment. I remember the Criterion guys saying that the reason they disallowed copying game saves from one user ID to another was due to retroactive trophy support. Too bad...
I've already played this through twice, too. Not sure if gaining trophies is a good enough reason to go through a third time (especially with all the newer games coming out).
Since the "year of Paradise" is almost over - BP has almost run its course. I was disappointed with the bikes pack and the only thing I am anticipating now that the trophies are hosed is the new island.
All in all, BP is still an awesome game! :D

That basically sums up my feelings.
There is no way I'm starting over just to unlock some silly little icons  I've got my gold cars so that tells everyone how far along I've gotten in the game ;) This is disappointing for sure :( but not the end of the world... I'm still digging the bike update and can't wait to see what else they have in store for us in the next update(s)
Vizion47 09-25-08, 09:30 AM I understand now why they dumbed down the trophy requirements.
Aletuner 09-25-08, 09:44 AM That basically sums up my feelings.

Same here... I havn't even finished the game ONCE let alone giving up where I am now (not too far past getting my "A" license) to start over again for some icons no one will ever see. I am finding it hard enough just to get the next level license with my limited gaming time. These damned events seem to be getting harder or something!!
Much like everyone else, it's dissappointing the trophies aren't retroactive. But considering this might be the only game I have a chance at getting a platinum trophy in I'll be going for a second playthrough. After the Bikes update I have a need to do some flat spins and barrel rolls. :)
TravKoolBreeze 09-25-08, 10:07 AM The better question is that can we use the pre-patch save to earn future trophies? I found out that all you have to do is backup the old save and do a new save for the trophies. If I can use the old save for future trophies, it's not a big sweat.

Even though they are silly little icons, there is a strange feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment when one pops up in the corner of your screen! :D (Especially some of the SSHD trophies!)
It is going to suck knowing you are a Burnout expert with no trophies to show for it! :p I don't know what I am going to do...
No retroactive is crap. I still love the game and can't wait for the new island but there is no way i'm starting over for trophies. They don't mean that much to me.
This sucks. I was hoping for them to add the trophies and then most of us immediately having all of them.
Vizion47 09-25-08, 10:40 AM This may sound stupid. How do you download the trophy patch?
MANAGER: What do you mean we never kept track of that stuff? So we were NEVER able to make retroactive trophies?
DEV: We are unable to extrapolate back.
MANAGER: Extrapolate what?
DEV: The usage data.
MANAGER: The usage data you guys apparently forgot to keep track of?
DEV: Actually, it was decided that the save file would be enormous and uncompetitive with save files from other games if we kept track of all that.
MANAGER: What kind of idiot would say something like that? Since when is a save file uncompetitive?
DEV: You said that. Your quote was, I believe, "Do you think GT5 is going to have a big save file? NO! So neither are we."
MANAGER: You're fired.
DEV: I actually quit this morning.
MANAGER: Your firing is retroactive to ten years ago.
DEV: So better be my severance.

Is this true? Im only on my A liscense as well so if I can start over to get the earlier trophies, then come back, I wouldnt mind doing this.
I knew this day would suck :( Limited gaming time leaves this question the answer to my weekend...
so's your face 09-25-08, 11:01 AM This may sound stupid. How do you download the trophy patch?
i tried too... don't think it's actully live just yet.
thank God for extrenal hard drives!
TyrantII 09-25-08, 11:18 AM Well Incognito figured out how to do it with warhawk... so it's possible.
I'm pissed but I did enjoy completing everything 101%. What bugs me the most is that they obviously knew about this weeks ago but never told any of us until the patch went live.
I bet it has to do with saving data on a game save, vs saving data on a tracking server which I think warhawk does.
Trophy data on a game save would easily be swappable in shared game saves if they didn't require you to start over.
Anyways, man up, give you all a chance to play a great game again. I was kind of glad when I went through Uncharted again.
I'm a bit miffed they let us think the trophies were going to be retroactive. There's no way they just discovered this the night before the patch drops; they've known and haven't said anything. I'd like to know when they discovered they couldn't do it, because it seems like up until this last week they were preaching retroactive trophies and gamers getting a 'pay day' when the update hits. Still a great game with some great free support, but the devs lost a lot of my trust and admiration with this one.
bdoyledimou 09-25-08, 12:00 PM Has the trophy patch been released?
I backed up my save game, deleted it, and started the game and nothing..

+2. If the trophies actually were worth something I'd be peeved, but they're pixels in the ether that serve no purpose. Trophies were a nice bonus to get me to go through Uncharted again, but certainly not worth starting BP all over again unless I have absolutely nothing else to do/play.
fcorona76 09-25-08, 12:54 PM Anyways, man up, give you all a chance to play a great game again. I was kind of glad when I went through Uncharted again.
QFT. It's a fun game the way it is and starting over isn't the worst thing in the world. I started over just for sh*ts & grins and it was amazing how fast I could blow through the early licenses after I had many, many hours of play time in the city and knew a lot of sweet shortcuts. Now things have changed with all the new territory & vehicles so it may be time to give this great game yet another fresh start.
Sorry to hear this, really blows for you guys that spent a lot of time unlocking stuff. I lost my game save when I put in a larger hard drive (screwed up the back-up) so I'll have to start over anyway.
Vizion47 09-25-08, 02:29 PM Just checked. I still can't get the patch.

KingShorty 09-25-08, 03:38 PM Try deleting your GAME DATA and then pop the game in and download whatever patch is required.
This game is not the same as going through Uncharted again. Naughty Dog basically came out the gates and told people that their patch is not retroactive and that you'd have to start fresh and go through the game again.
With this game, many people (especially myself) have done multiple playthroughs already. Luckily some people (especially myself) have the time to do it again and others don't. So it's going to be about "investing time again into this game vs investing time into the plethora of games that are coming out next month"
Don't get me wrong, the game is great and the people at Criterion are really cool with the updates that many of us would gladly have paid for. What it comes down to is them having the knowledge that it's not going to be retroactive and holding out on that information until the moment the patch went live.
Me: But, but..... you said...
Criterion: Yeah, it ain't gonna happen!

Games are about enjoyment for me, trophies or no trophies. If the trophies were worth something like PSN points or whatnot, then maybe I'd give a rip. I still enjoy the occasional run through Paradise City, but I've no need to start over and do something I've already done before so I can have some meaningless trophies show up on my profile.
Is it kind of a bummer that Criterion didn't announce it earlier? Sure. Does it make the entire game crap and the developers evil or untrustworthy because of it? I'd say hardly. If everyone supported their games the way Criterion has supported BP, well, I'm sure a lot of you would still find something to complain about...LOL!
Vizion47 09-25-08, 03:59 PM Try deleting your GAME DATA and then pop the game in and download whatever patch is required.
That seems a little excessive, I mean downloading 400+mb to see if it works. If that be the case then why didn't Criterion say you had to delete your game data to install the new patch.

They didn't say it was live everywhere. They probably just meant the UK. You do know where Criterion is located, yeah? Not to mention the Euro PSN updates tend to hit a little earlier than the US ones anyway? Maybe if you keep trying every 15 minutes and then post here complaining that it isn't working yet, it will magically appear?

Well, I try to sleep but I really can't. It's a by product of my military days.
The Coke Zero stuff is my addiction because my mom drank a lot of Coke (and still does) when she was pregnant with me. So I'm basically a "Coke addict" (Coke baby, if you will) from birth :D
I can lay down and maybe get an hour to an hour and a half max of sleep and am going all day.
I should work for Insomniac. They can get a lot of use out of me!

Degenerazn 09-25-08, 06:09 PM I feel like Sony should just scrap this whole trophy system. Its one of those cases thats too little too late. Their obvious mimic of MS's gamer points is by far, unsuccessful. By introducing these trophies Sony caused more anger than joy to their loyal consumers. Trophies are still not universal among all newly released games. Only some, mainly first party games, have them. Trophy patches to games already released are almost pointless to those who already spent countless hours on the game.

I know you upset but LMAO @ scraping it, the ps3 will be around another 3-4 years minimum and most games coming out now are starting to support it

I'm not upset because I do 95% of my gaming on my Xbox360 and have been accumulating gamerpoints ever since I got the console 2 years ago. It just doesn't seem like trophies will become standard anytime soon.

That's the (sad) point..
Why wasn't this in place from day 1?
Now it's a case of too little too late, and unless the Trophies and points accumulated can be transferred to some other benefit, they just don't mean anything really.
(For that matter, MS points don't really mean anything either.. but at least they were there from day 1).

Sony should have had them since day one, but if they don't mean anything either way, I'm just glad the ps3 finally got it
Yes there are going to be some growing pains in this trophy transition, but in a couple months most (if not all) games will have trophy support.
Another thought is that some BP trophies don't require a new game save so you could just be driving around and still get a trophy with your original game save. For example, visit the airfield. Well at least I hope so.

Mikazaru 09-25-08, 07:01 PM The patch is up.
I feel like Sony should just scrap this whole trophy system.
Overreaction.
Aren't you the guy that stiffed someone after they shared their PSN ID with you?
Why you aren't banned and beaten is beyond me!
No, he was the guy that GOT stiffed.
*teehee, stiffed*

If he WAS THAT GUY, then I'll apologize.
Aletuner 09-26-08, 09:15 AM kingshorty is actually 4 people all located around the globe at various locations. they share the same universal account and username on avs. when you see the "shorty is now offline/online" message, that just means it shift change and the transition is usually seamless. while one is on the psn, another posts on avs, one sleeps and the third does research trying to locate the continuum transfunctioner... who's mystery is only exceeded by its power.
i figured it all out 2 weeks ago and due to an immunity clause have decided to break my silence! look for an article in u.s. news weekly in mid-october. ;)
Aaaahhh-HA!!!! Shorty is actually a product of the DHARMA Initiative and does those crazy sleep hours so he can enter a code every two hours to keep Paradise City from blowing up and then... wait... I think I'm getting this confused with T.V. Maybe I need more sleep!?!?
Big_Mog 09-26-08, 09:19 AM I have yet to see a title that has retroactive trophies... Makes me wonder if this is even possible?
Aletuner 09-26-08, 09:27 AM Holy crap!!! Shorty must be asleep!! Someone go push the button!! :(
KingShorty 09-26-08, 09:37 AM Not asleep. Catching up on Heroes. Am still here reading all the stuff on the SOCOM thread.
@Big_Mog, Incognito managed to do retroactive trophies on Warhawk. Granted it was only about 4, they did not do what Criterion did.

Oh have you gotten to the one where...... :D
I have been caught up since last season after buying season 1 on HD-DVD and DVR'ing all of season 2... great series!
DarrellG 09-26-08, 09:43 AM I think I'm going to pick this game up used with the next coupon. If I would have remembered yesterday, I would have gotten it with the most recent one.
It's only like $20 used and it seems that there's still a bunch of people playing and they're still adding content.
Aletuner 09-26-08, 09:44 AM Oh and so far season #3 is totally awesome just for the scenes Dania Ramirez is in... :D

Am going to start the last episode of season 1 in a bit. Just taking a short break to rest my eyes.
I started them on Wednesday night and am trying to get caught up before Monday for episode 3 (last Monday was episodes 1 & 2, hence 2 hours).

Season 1 sucked me in the same way it did you. I started watching the first episode around Noon on a Sunday and then ended up canceling my plans and watching 8 episodes that day. I have not seen either episode from this season yet.
Vizion47 09-26-08, 11:16 AM The trophies aren't that bad. I was able to get 36% in less than 2 hours. Already upto a B license.
Cygnus311 09-26-08, 11:38 AM Really, why hasn't Sony made trophies mandatory yet anyway? Most developers already have them figured out for the 360. What's so difficult?
*do the Burning Route events advance your license faster than other events or something?

It has been confirmed by multiple developers that mandatory trophies will be coming soon. Most think starting Jan. 1st 2009.
* a win is a win. It doesn't matter what event you do.
Cygnus311 09-26-08, 12:03 PM Just curious cause someone said to get your licenses fast, do the burning route as fast as you can and then the easy races. I've only put a few hours into BP so far so I'll probably start over.
Has anyone confirmed if you start a new game save to get the earlier trophies, then go back to your original game save to continue getting the later trophies?
Chris Schempp 09-26-08, 12:22 PM This is awesome. I haven't sent it back to GameFly yet and I haven't played it in a month. Good thing I didn't really go anywhere in the game.
Vizion47 09-26-08, 02:04 PM bla bla bla. 4 hours of work left.

;)

Warhawk has some retroactive trophies (rank, combat badges, medals etc) since stats are tracked online and not on game saves.

Sorry, but you gotta go to Matzira's house to pick it up. Oh, and don't buy his, "Oh, I'm sorry I was in the shower!" excuse for how he always shows up at the door.

Interesting.
I always got the "Oh, I was just working out" excuse.
