Welcome to Scott's home theater and addition build. Thanks for the great info from the AVS guys, it was definitely a learning experience and still is a work in progress!

Updates are on page 3, here is a recent pic of the 2.35 acoustically transparent screenwall in progress

Square rooms (19x19) are bad for audio. Many here would extend the wall where that room inside your room is to make it more like 19x14

See, that is true, but there are so many theaters that are in square shaped...
What if the room has very good acoustic dampning? (Is that the correct term?)

Actually, scawt, here's an article I found, that might be useful for you as well.

Well, is there a way for you to show us actual pics of the room? That way we'd know what's been done and what's there to do. That'd help a lot and make it easier for us.

Made some progress over the weekend, since its just me at the house now :(

Mid atlantic 24U rack rails and a couple shelves. Thoughts on using the right side for a DVD rack or just insulate over it?

Back of the rack, took a long time to clean up the wiring
http://forums.posdsm.com//imagehosting/3564928586fa77ed.jpg

Spent some cash on Blue Jeans Cables (3 series 1 HDMIs & a component). I still have room in the conduit for more wires, also lots of mounting points for the projector in case it needs to be moved.

http://forums.posdsm.com//imagehosting/3564928586fee9e6.jpg

Here is the screen wall and the insulation is finally done in the theater room. Still need to finish up the rest of the addition in order to get the insulation inspection.

Mounted the Klipsch ceiling speakers & enclousures in the master bath. These are wired into the closet too.

Lots of beer at the time of purchase, and multiple video inputs. I already have 13 speakers a couple subs running to the closet, so might as well add in some more HDMIs. :)

Last update for the addition and HT room until the drywall is done:

I officially hate insulation now. I'm never doing this again by myself. The walls were fine, but ~15ft vaulted ceilings in the master bedroom weren't fun.

So the plumber hooked up the tub and it was leaking from the jet lines. I'm glad the spa company replaced the part/labor under warranty, but still have to put the POS back in the hole
http://forums.posdsm.com//imagehosting/356495d017652bed.jpg

Built the final two inwall speaker boxes for the theater room. I'm glad those are finally done. The windows will have hinged cover eventually.

Picked up the last two surround speakers
http://forums.posdsm.com//imagehosting/356495d01735240a.jpg

I've never been so happy to have two buckets of glue
http://forums.posdsm.com//imagehosting/356495d0173e5f42.jpg

I should have put the putty pads on before the insulation, but didn't think about it till later. I'm glad their in before drywall though.

Wait until you try to hang the drywall on those ceilings. I ended up solving that little issue with the ol' checkbook. Goes against all my DIY street cred, but my lower back is more important.

Good advice. I think I'm going to do the same thing, I don't want to deal with the drywall on a project this big. I had my drywall/sanding/mudding experience with the kitchen remodel already :)

If you are planning on putting a door (such as glass) on your equipment rack, I would recommend setting the rails back at LEAST 3 inches to allow for knobs, buttons, and other protrusions from the equipment.

My rack is set back about 2.5" and its BARELY adequate for my glass door.... it's good enough that I don't want to dismantle the whole thing to move it back .5-1"... but annoying enough that I wish I had.. :)

If I'm not mistaken that is actually one dedicated 20A hooked up to four outlets. You would need two runs of the yellow romex for two dedicated 20A. Don't worry you should be fine.

However you do have a code violation of using a 20 amp receptacles on the 15 amp circuits. I also spotted one next to the bucket of GG. I suspect you bought them for every outlet?

A few locations are now also expecting the ground plug to be on the up side for new construction.

Yep, our house is one of those. Ground plug up, thankfully we found out (from a neighbor who also built his own home) about that before I wired them in - otherwise I'd be redoing the entire home.

Looking forward to more pics! BTW, I'd second the $$$ on the drywall - going high and vaulted, etc... not too much fun. I don't think it will hit the cred too much. ;-)

Thanks for the heads up guys! I'm going to give him crap about the outlets, so they will get fixed before final inspection.

I'm pretty sure the two 20A are on a single 12/3, so I guess they are not dedicated.

BIGmouthinDC
01-02-09, 02:31 PM
I'm pretty sure the two 20A are on a single 12/3, so I guess they are not dedicated.

Dedicated means that the line comes from your breaker box directly to the outlet box with nothing else connected that consumes power or more importantly for HT that introduces some interference or ground loop issues into the system.

Your two duplex outlets (4) connected to the yellow Romex are probably dedicated.

Scawt
01-02-09, 03:07 PM
Aww, I thought they had to be separate runs for each outlet to be dedicated, but yes he ran it directly to the box. Thanks for the info!

dk-customs
01-02-09, 11:47 PM
If the run is 12/3, then it can be wired as two dedicated 20A by sharing the ground and neutral. In the breaker box the black to one breaker, red to another breaker, white to neutral, and bare or green to equipment ground. Caution if you use half size or tandem breakers, be sure to plug the black and red onto opposite legs of the panel.

I also think it’s a good idea to use a 2 pole breaker for a shared neutral circuit. The down side is when one breaker trips, it trips the other as well.

Thanks! I'm trying to figure out what to do with the 4 zones and the volume control. I ran speaker wire and extra Cat5e to zone 2 and 3 from the rack, but 4 got neglected and is outside without the Cat5e. I want a single receiver to control everything, but 7.2 plus 3 other zones is getting complicated :)

I'd be curious how you achieve that. In my own build (7.2 for HT and 2ch for ceiling speakers in the playroom), my installer had me pick up a separate 2ch receiver, aside from the Marantz AVR8003 driving the dedicated theater. I had just assumed that the ceiling speakers could share the Marantz with the HT.

Not sure the thought process behind this one from the local code gods. First most cords (right angle type) have the ground on the bottom so when plugged in the cord is pointing up. My Freezer in the garage is this way, drives me nuts. But I suppose they are thinking that if the plug is slightly pulled out and something slides down the wall it would hit the ground vs the hot and common first.

Great thread. I have always been amazed how fast the Drywall pros can getter down!

It all started when Vito forget to remove all his gold chains from clubbing all night. His gas had been turned off because he had to pay Vinnie off for some gambling debts and couldn't make the payment. He still had electricity so he just moved a space heater from room to room.

He bent over to pull out the plug and he got dizzy and fell into the wall and his gold chain swung into the open gap. That was the last of Vito. Now Vinnie was out 4 large. He mentioned this story to his uncle Sal who ran the local electricians union and the rest is history.

And it turns out that Uncle Antny was on the city council. Even after the kickback
Uncle Sal paid to Uncle Antny, the payoff on the contract to fix all dem old outlets (HEY! You wouldn't want any "accidents" to happen would you?) was so huge that Uncle Sal forgave the 4 large that Vinnie owed him (that's right...Sal had a little sumpin' going on the side besides the broad down at the club that Aunt Ginny didn't know about) and gave him 10% off the top for keeping it in the family.

LOL /\

I was fortunate enough to have the whole week off and work on the house and drink lots of beer. I spent most of the time painting the other rooms in the addition, but I did make some progress in the HT room.

Built most of the stage yesterday, I basically just winged it except for a quick sketch. Supplies used:
1x6x12 hemlock for the arch
(2)2x6x12 cheap green boards cut to 130"
2x6x8s cut to 21" for the framing and misc pieces for the arch supports
Left over roof paper stapled to the bottom
Exterior screws, finishing nails and some glue

http://forums.posdsm.com//imagehosting/3564996d5151ffa2.jpg

I made the stage deep enough to do a AT screen if I go that route

http://forums.posdsm.com//imagehosting/3564996d5155dab3.jpg

http://forums.posdsm.com//imagehosting/3564996d51580b71.jpg

Made another trip to Lowes for the top of the stage and bought my first router. I'm not sure about this, but I don't think I can fill the whole thing with sand since the room is not in a basement. Any problems with doing partial sand and rest insulation?

http://forums.posdsm.com//imagehosting/3564996d515a1331.jpg

I also forgot to tell you guys about the drywall experience with the hired help. Now I see why you guys either do it yourself or supervise the entire time. They messed up several times on the double 5/8" with GG, but everything was eventually fixed. At one point they had a couple sheets on the ceiling without glue. On another wall they did put GG between the sheets but they did 1/2" for the 2nd layer. After I came home, I complained and they added a 3rd layer for that wall using 1/4". :p

lots and lots and lots of touchups on that flat black. what a pain it is. I noticed you used a sprayer and wondering if that made a difference in the streak factor. I used PaintSticks in my room, and after 4 coats on my ceiling, I can still see roller streaks here and there.

After talking with Ted and looking over my leftover green glue supply, I decided to add in a 2nd layer of sub flooring with green glue in the middle. I'm almost done with the 2nd layer, just need to pick up some more glue:

http://forums.posdsm.com//imagehosting/35649ad2bd9ce1e4.jpg

I also finished up the stage except for the final sanding around the radius. I used all screws just in case it needs to be moved or taken apart again. The majority of it was filled with play sand and insulation.

I'm looking for suggestions and recommendations on the screen wall:

I can't decide whether or not to do the AT setup and build a false wall or go with the standard screen? Any ideas for the door entrance on the right would be great too. I would love to do a SMX screen, but the budget is basically gone and will likely upgrade to a better screen later.

Quick specs:
Stage width 130"
Stage height 8"
Ceiling to floor 7'10"
Front of stage to back wall 15'6"
Desired screen 120"
Klipsch Equipment on stage:
-(2) RF-5 fronts
- RW-8 mini sub
- KW-120 sub
- RC35 center (need stand)
Projector will most likely be the Panny 3000 (13-14' distance)

The name is a bit misleading since it really isn't 'glue'. I like to think of it as green goop. It gets applied using a caulk gun and functions as a dampening agent to keep the sound in or out.

BIGmouthinDC
03-03-09, 09:09 AM
It's not glue, it is actually a viscoelastic damping agent that converts sound energy into heat. I'm not making this $hit up. It's science. You can read more in the library of articles at www.soundproofingcompany.com.

I've been toying with building a HTPC based on the GIGABYTE GA-E7AUM-DS2H (same as yours?), but I think I'm going to wait a bit longer.

Less for TV and Bluray, and more as a Tversity/PlayOn/iTunes server and web browsing and the occasional PC game.

Nice, I just ordered the last of my parts from newegg:

LG Black Internal Blu-ray Burner Super Multi Blu-ray Disc Burner & HD DVD-ROM Drive Model GGW-H20L

ENERMAX UC-MA8 80mm Case Fan (2)

ARCTIC COOLING MX-2 Thermal Compound

Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

I'll have 2tb now :)

Proposed carpet for theater room? Thoughts? (sorry for small sample, its black with light gold pattern). The installer talked about putting it on the stage too?

For version 1.0 buy the original fabric that Ruben used to launch SMX. After a couple of months he switched to a custom weave.

Yeah, but I thought the problem was once the manufacturer found out what he was using it for, the price, like, tripled. I guess if you REALLY want to know, you can search that thread, big as it is.

Purchase 24U rack rails (or whatever height you need)
Frame out rack hole before you do insulation, drywall, etc..
Mount rack rails
Purchase custom shelves and faces from http://www.stayonline.com/rack-custom-shelves.aspx
Lots of black paint and molding!

OH SNAP, thats Awesome! A bit pricey, but sweet. I wish now I would have researched this a bit more in the beginning...while I have the width in my opening, I dont think I have the height. I will have to check ttonight. Well, I might be able to just go with the face plates, as that would still work, screwing to the wood surround and then just bringing in my trim to cover it. Is this the only place to get these faceplates that you know of?

Thanks for the info. also, are those Klipsch speakers?

smakovits
04-24-09, 08:58 PM
I just went and looked up more dimensions and learned that the outside width is 22" therefore, I know I wont be able to get a rack into my 19" opening, so I would have to go face plate only, but thats not too bad, I think I could swing it still.
