Hi all --

I've got a question that I can't figure out. I've got an X-Box 360 and just got a Verizon FIOS TV HDTV DVR box. I also have an In-Focus bare bones DLP projector that I've been using as a temp measure for the last year until really good ones got cheaper.

Anway, the projector has amazingly few connection options. Basically and S-Cable and a DVI (computer monitor) input. No HDMI, No Component Video. I've been connecting my X-Box with Component cable, and I have a Component to DVI adapter at the projector.

So here's the question: I'm about to get a blue ray player sometime soon, and I just got an HDMI switcher for my various electronics. So basically I'm going to stop using the component wire to the Projector and move over to HDMI. I ordered a little HDMI to DVI adapter, but my question is, what the heck does this do? Isn't the HDMI signal digital and the DVI input analog? Does the adapter degrade the signal in any way?

Ultimately I'm going to get a projector wit h a true, decent HDMI input, but are these little adapters ok for now?

Thanks for the help and ideas...

Isn't the HDMI signal digital and the DVI input analog? When it comes to "video", HDMI and DVI are IDENTICAL digital signals! The only difference is that HDMI also carries audio. When using DVI, the audio is usually carried over SPDIF digital or TOSLINK optical but can be analog as well.Does the adapter degrade the signal in any way?An HDMI to DVI adapter is simply an adapter from one set of pins to another. Straight through wires!!

Unless the adapter creates a poor electrical connection, there will be no degradation whatsoever.

BTW, usually InFocus projectors use an "M1-DA" connector which contains pins for component, VGA, DVI, HDMI, etc.

does the ops pj dvi input need to be hdcp compliant to get/use an hdmi signal?
i'm not sure.

Depends on the source but most likely it will need to be for the FIOS box.

There are HDCP and non-HDCP versions of both DVI and HDMI.

As mjones points out, a high-def cable box will require HDCP.
