Hi,

i bought the new 80gb model that was released earlier this month yesterday and made some comparisons between the 2 models. As i wanted a version which consumed less power and thus would be more quiet i went ahead and bought the new 80gb model.

All was measured with a rather cheap device, but you get the idea. The values are more or less exact. Sometimes during XMB the new one drops below 100 Watt, then it goes up to 105 if you move around but usually would settle to the values below. Same for DVD playback, black screen sucked less power into the PS3 and so on.

I think the highest voltage i noticed was like 128 Watt so far which is a solid 70 Watts less than my old console used.

Movie for Blu-Ray was Casino Royal, Chapter 2.
DVD was Totral Recall, with Arnold having breakfast at the very beginning and last but not least CoD4 is the tutorial scene where you get explained how to use your weapons.

Console|60GB|80GB
Standby|9| 9
XMB|156|113
DVD|152|112
DVD+Upscale|186|115|
Blu-Ray|153|118
CoD4|190|115

Overall im impressed how much less power the console eats now and its staying quiet so far, even after being in the XMB for literally hours (those mp3s want to be restored ;) and also match with CoD4 didnt make any noise at all.

I will sell the 60gb version since i don't need PS2 compatibilty, card reader or xtra usb ports.

that 65nm Cell definitely does make a difference.

Does anyone know what the MGS4 80GB PS3 uses? Joysiq's comparison of the different PS3 SKUs (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/26/tabulator-comparing-the-playstation-3-skus/)says that the CECHE01 uses 65nm if built 2008, but 90nm if built 2007. Yet every other site/forum i've read says they were all built with 90nm.

Can anyone with a MGS4 80GB PS3 built in 2008 do a wattage test?

As far as i know does this 80gb core model not only use 65nm cell but also 65nm rsx (the gfx chip).

At least its like 15-20 watts lower than the 40gb model which has 65/90 nm cell/gfx chip.

Glad I went for the 80gb core -- just ordered mine earlier today (signed up for the $150 Sony card offer in Aug and decided to order the system now)

Was deciding between 40gb or 80gb core since the 40gb was dropped to $350-$360, but I figured the extra 40gb, DS3, and 65/65nm lower power would be better for the long term (slightly lower electric bill each month and less heat)

i don't care too much for the electric bill tbh, i just hope it remains as silent as it is now ;)

and for the people wanting to buy my old 60gb model, its already up on ebay :D

Yeah my older 60GB ran hot while playing movies or games, sometimes with a rather noticable fan noise that my newer 40GB doesn't have. The 80GB unit would be even nicer but I'm happy with the one I have. Besides I upgraded my drive to a 160GB version yesterday that consumes less power than the stock drive (if by only a smidgin) so I'm happy. Now I really don't have to worry about running out space. I'm really glad Sony is being so aggressive with their hardware this gen.

Wow, 190watts during COD4... and I've been playing that game since it was released... Oh well, I like to hear Al Gore cry whenever I turn COD4 on!

I was thinking of selling my 60GB and getting an 80GB too. I'd have to swap out my 120GB drive and find a buyer, I assume the 60GB is worth more too.

wow, did not expect it to be that inefficient !

It has been getting somewhat loud lately but i love the fact that i can still play my PS2 games and I have the use of the media card readers.

I would like to believe that they build all other versions somewhat inferior to the 60GB, But i really do not want to have something that uses so much power when i am playing a game (which i can do for hours).
This thing is a hog, but my PC was a whole lot worse (just would not have it on as long).

With it being the only system released now (other than the 20GB) with full BC (original 80GB doesn't count) I'd say you can get quite a return on it from someone seeking to minimize their system clutter. I sold mine awhile back and got a fair return for it.
