View Full Version : You dont mess with a Zohan
I got the flick this past sunday but didnt get a chance to see it till last night, and let me just say that its a really good looking transfer. The video quality is at least a 4 outta 5. Looking really natural with nice colors and some pop. Audio sounds good too. If your a fan of this flick you should pick it up. Oh and the unrated stuff is not that much stuff. Ill post some screens later maybe.
raoul_duke 09-26-08, 01:43 PM Yeah, got my copy of You Don't Mess With The Zohan today. Looks like another spot-on job by Sony.
great another awesome transfer for a crap movie
raoul_duke 09-27-08, 10:50 AM On second thoughts, the brightness level seems off on both cuts. I thought maybe my fiance had turned up the brightness on my tv, but nope, it's where it's meant to be. Checking out the previews,(cool trailer for the forthcoming Casino Royale double-dip) ,and features confirmed this, although this increased brightness also extends to the deleted scenes and film footage used during the various featurettes. If intentional, it seems very strange...
mikelike2 10-11-08, 09:11 PM This BDLive disc locked up on my Magnavox player. Anyone else have an issue?

I thought I was the only one who thought that also...picture looked "washed out" and I found a review of this movie where it says the same thing...I copy pasted the quote below...
"I must say this is the worst Blu-ray movie I've seen, and I'm not talking about the movie, but the presentation. About 75% of the movie is completely washed out, with blacks appearing as greys, and skin looking like it had a liberal dusting with baby powder. I didn't watch the movie in theaters, but I can't imagine it looked like this. I found this so distracting I almost couldn't keep up with the complex plot of the movie (kidding, of course, but it was very distracting). Sure, the 1080p picture is sharp, and crystal clear, but none of that matters when the color is so off."
eddy_winds 10-12-08, 06:32 PM Color is off.

I noticed this too. What threw me though is when I put in Forgetting Sarah Marshall next and it was close to the same problem. THAT's when I checked the brightness on my TV (My girlfriend's sister totally jacked it once thinking "it looked better")
Rob Tomlin 10-12-08, 11:55 PM Good looking transfer?
This was horrible. Horrendous, actually. I don't think I have ever seen another new release on BD look this bad. The picture is completely washed out in numerous scenes.
I don't know the reason for this, but it looked like crap.
Movie sucked just as bad as the PQ too.
shadowrage 10-13-08, 01:19 AM If that's what your describing then it's faithful to the Theatrical release. Everything was blown out. That seems to be a trend in comedies and bad dramas recently. Step Brothers also had this same shooting style were the color balance looked a little off.
Sarah Marshall should look worse. You take any movie that has Judd Apatow's name on it anywhere and I promise it will look horrible. For some reason bad photography is something of a side effect.
Zohan is worth the price alone for Dave Matthews.

Oh please. It was just WAAAY over brightened. It had pretty good detail and actually looked HD. The worst BDs don't even look HD.
The movie was too stupid for me to finishing watching though.

Funny post.
It was just "WAAAY over brightened" but it still looked "HD"!?
No_U-Turn 10-13-08, 12:13 PM I wonder if this "black level" problem was intentional or not. Personally i think it was a mastering error. An obvious workaround, though not perfect, is simply lowering the display's blacklevel while watching "The Zohan!". Or applying some Humus. ;)
Thats how it look in theaters guys. I think it looks great. At least a 4 in PQ.

If you mean 4 out of 10, I agree with you.
tiger_qc 10-13-08, 03:17 PM I'm a fan of Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy and Anger Management, I was planning of blind-buying this one.
According to all of you this is a "no go"?

Well, considering there is no "black" on the disc, the PQ is very disappointing. Like i said, you could lower your displays brightness (black level) to compensate while watching and make it somewhat more watchable.
I thought the film itself was hilarious, but many hated it. It has quite a lot of weak parts, but the better parts more than make up for them. IMO
Try to rent it before buying would be my recommendation. :)

No Black? So the whole neighborhood watch at night and fire scenes werent dark in your movie? And yes the washed out look is bad but it wasnt as bad in theatres. The sharpness and detail is there but there is a faded look to the film in most scenes. The most amount is in the whole begining on the beach, it has a goldish haze over it.
audiomixer 10-13-08, 04:26 PM great another awesome transfer for a crap movie
+1 ;)
mpalmieri1203 10-13-08, 05:39 PM I found the first half of the movie to be pretty funny. It just went on way too long.
The transfer while not wholly terrible is destroyed by quite a few scenes that seem to take the brightnesst level of your TV and jack it up to 110.
The blacks are so detailed because they are so terribly blown out. There is no richness to the color in these scenes at all. Everything appears to be in a smoky haze.
While the transfer may be bad, I suspect that even Adam Sandler wouldn't watch this turkey more than once. His mother maybe twice, but that's about it.
I'd rather watch upconverted DVDs with a "normal" color balance and contrast than this piece of garbage. The brightness was so off it made my BenQ 8720 look like a $200 LCD screen from Walmart. I actually stopped the movie, put in Sunshine to confirm that nothing's broken, before I accepted that this is the worst BD transfer I have yet seen.
The movie had some funny parts but largely forgettable.
lgans316 10-13-08, 10:55 PM You guys paid the price for messing with a Zohan.:D

Same thing here...I happened to have guests over that night to watch this movie...should have tested it first.
As we were watching...my guest (who was waiting for a good excuse to leap into Blu ray) says..." sorry but this doesnt look that good...whats with all the hype?" I was thinking to myself what the heck is wrong with my display and VERY embarrassed as my high-end FP looked like crap! THANKS ZOHAN you BASTARD!
All the best parts of this movie were in the commercials, the rest of the movie sucked.
Vince2909 10-14-08, 02:54 PM So the movie sucks AND the transfer is even worse???
eddy_winds 10-14-08, 04:41 PM So the movie sucks AND the transfer is even worse???A Rental if you must ;)

No. The transfer sucks and the movie is even worse:D
tripleM 10-14-08, 07:09 PM No. The transfer sucks and the movie is even worse:D
Here I thought it was only me who thought this was 2 hrs I will never get back.
Now the 2 minutes preview for the Quantum of Solace was better than the 2 hrs for the entire Zohan.
Category 5 10-16-08, 04:48 PM Holy Crap. After Sarah Marshall i thought I had stumbled on a fluke in BD mastering but it appears the same guys did this one. No contrast, orange skin tones, and generally bad color all around...never mind the fact that Sandler seems to be losing his edge.
This is a purely crap BD transfer. This format will utterly fail if movies continue to tlook this bad. They are putting too many of their top guys on the big budget films and someone is using the "auto correct" button on these. That or they are taking them straight from the telecine to the disc without any mastering in between.
Utter garbage. A joke exploitation of the format. Anyone who thinks this looks good isn't qualified to judge PQ in my opinion. When color gets transposed like in this movie and Sarah marshall I get a headache, and almost nausea.
Sony, you should be ashamed. Is this what we can expect from you in the future? I'll wait until your releases hit cable if it is!

I think it looks like complete crap too.
That does NOT mean that I blame Sony, and neither should you....unless you can prove that Sony screwed the transfer. By all accounts thus far, this is how it looked in the theater. If you want to blame someone, blame the director or DP.
Dave Mack 12-27-08, 01:00 AM I too thought my settings had gone wonky on my PJ. Either the gamma or brightness were WAY off but no, that's how the transfer looked. Looks really odd. Not just washed out and flat looking but with very unnatural looking color and not in a good way. The wife and I however laughed our asses off. Doesn't mean it's a great film but to us it was funny. The cat hackysack scene alone was worth the rental.
:)
This movie is hilarious. Way better than most movies and comedies lately. When movies like Tropic Thunder, House Bunny, Love Guru, etc are showing up, saying this movie isn't funny is laughable.
The black level issue (which is only on CERTAIN scenes, I don't know why you guys are acting like the whole movie has the same issue) is very irritating though. Can't believe it got finalized looking like that.
This is a purely crap BD transfer.
Most people keep throwing that around, but the funny thing is: there is no transfer. The movie was shot with digital cameras, Genesis to be more precise.
The brightness/contrast/color issue seemed to be an artistic choice IMO (good or bad is another issue). What I did not like, was some that some DNR has been applied to many scenes, while others appeared intact with all characteristic the digital noise of the Genesis.
As for the movie itself, I quite liked it, but then again I'm a Sandler fan. Although by all the steriods they've thrown at him, I'd be amazed if he doesn't turn up to be the next action movie star :D
The last actor I seem to recall changing so much was Nicholas Cage, when he went from skinny @ss in rasing arisona to bad @ss in Kiss Of Death. Then when I saw him in Con Air, I couldn't believe it again, he seemed like Sylvester Satallone in Rambo.
Sandler went the other way, as he used to be a little chubby.
Now that I come to think of it, Christian Bale is also kind of a metamorphoses guy.
The story of Zohan is funny movie and entire of the movie filled with dirty joke, also show off his crotch too much. The picture transfer is a bad BD one,it's too bright.
This Blu ray version was as bad as the Sarah Marshall one... A lot of younger customers buy these so they better start paying better attention to detail... (no pun intended) :D

ricwhite 12-27-08, 11:44 AM Pretty much an average transfer. I wouldn't say it's awful or "crap", though. ?? I've seen FAR worse BD transfers than this.

While watching the entire Zohan movie there were 2 icons on the top right corner of the screen. See the attached.
Both were black and white. One had a small rectangular box with an S, and the other one looked like a round speaker with an S.
I went into my Elite Blu-ray programming and turned off the display, but it was still on the screen.
Anyone know what these icons represent? How do you remove them in the future?
Thank you
The movie itself was good but it's over brightness transfer.
I have showed this movie to a ton of my friends and all agree that it's absolutely hilarious. Funniest Adam Sandler movie ever if you ask me.

agreed, The most hilarious film of him and also I love 50 First Dates,Wedding Singer too.I think because Judd Apartow co-writer,Sadler's former films were not in this way.:):D
xradman 05-27-09, 06:11 PM I watched my UK import of this movie (which I assume is a direct US port since it's Sony), and there were very soft audio pops during the unrated cut of the movie. The pops occurred at the seamless branching spots throughout the movie (similar to Harold and Kumar goes to Guantanamo Bay, but less noisy). This is with Oppo BDP 83 bitstreaming to Denon 3808 receiver. Anyone else notice this?
Patsfan123 05-27-09, 06:24 PM I watched this on my PS3 TrueHD > PCM and I heard no pops or anything. I am actually trying to pick this one up now as I saw it on cable the other day and couldn't stop laughing.

I don't get the bad reviews of Tropic Thunder. People either really love it, or really hate it. I loved it. IMHO, Zohan was pretty dull, and The Love Guru was the worst movie I've seen in years.
