Odd question, I suppose.

Possibly not even the right forum.

Anyways, I'm considering the upgrade the BR once Oppo comes out with their new player, but this is a question I've always wondered.

So, does BR result in a better picture than what we see at theaters? I would imagine so, due to a large number of variables and limitations of current theater projection technology.

I was reading how Criterion does a hi-def scan of the film masters before creating their discs and it got me thinking about it again. Would it be correct to say that SD DVD is roughly equivalent to theater PQ on their equipment and BR is superior to both?

I'm also thinking that theater screens have different pros and cons compared to home TVs, so maybe this comparison would be a little too far fetched. Eh.

I tried the search function.

Apparently, not thoroughly enough.

You likely searched the Blu-ray forum. That thread was created in the HD-DVD fanboy forum of doom (R.I.P), so it's no wonder you missed it. I say ignore it since many of the respondents there were HIGHLY biased against the format in general. You may get a more measured response in your thread here.

My two cents... relatively speaking, I've noticed that digital movies in the theater for some films looked better than the normal analog versions. I've also noticed that some of my Blu-rays look better than when I first saw an analog film in theaters (family members have commented on this too). There are dozens a reasons why this can sometimes be the case, but I don't think there is one single blanket answer for all cases.
