I have a 8" x 4' strip where my sewer pipe ran so close to the wall that just the second 5/8 layer covered it. We planned on adding a 8"x4' stip of drywall to get the double layer and cover it later with something. What kind of deficiency am I look at if I leave the strip with just one layer.
