Long Time Lurker, second time poster.
Have:

Yamaha rxv1800
Pioneer bdp05 whatever bluray player (the new one)
HDMI connects the two
Have seven speakers plugged in and setup and tested with Yamaha's built in AUTO SETUP.

Cannot get SBL and SBR (back right and left) to play. They work in the test modes.

When I play Star Wars Ep. III, they all work during the THX thingy, but when the movie plays, it only plays across the front 3 and the 2 surround (side L/R). (I have 5.1 EX selected)

When I play Transformers in Bluray, it only plays in the 5. I know transformers is only 5.1, but am trying to get 7.1 (or a hybrid 5.1) to fill the rear of the room and really fix the sound for the back row.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thx
Rob

I'm not familiar with your receiver, buy you have to use one of the matrix surround modes to get 7.1 out of a 5.1 signal. Dolby Pro Logic IIx, etc.

I am utterly unfamiliar with your receiver. However, if its similiar to the 663, I know that it can matrix m-ch pcm, but not hi-def HT bistreams. Is yours similiar? I dont know. I also dont know if that means the 663 cant matrix even the legacy streams (which would be surprising I suppose).

can your bdp internally decode? perhaps try that, and then apply matrixing? You wont get the logos to pop up, but maybe you'll get your surround field after all.

Sorry I cant help more, this is my shot in the dark.

THX for the help.
Was able to find in Yamaha menu area to turn on surround ES/EX which creates almost 7.1.

Still confused why the THX "thingy" gives 7.1 (all seven channels light up on the front of the receiver).

Do any of you think I might see some action from running analog from pioneer bluray as 7.1 (multi-channel) output? The manual isn't very user friendly.

THX again for your help.

No. If you have only 5.1 analogs out, that's all you will get. If you have 7.1, you will have to have a 7.1 native track to get that, b/c I don't know of any players that can apply matrixing on their own. Then there's that whole LFE cut issue.. stick with HDMI if you got it..
