Hey all, I am very new to everything audio/video so my questions may be very "basics of AV 101"

I was just wondering if there exists a device that can un-compress the cable signal I am currently getting and convert it into a higher video/audio format.

I have S-VIDEO on my TV set and I would like to get the better video quality off of my broadcasts, I also would like to be able to plug the audio end of the broadcast into my audio receiver to hear it through my nice Yamaha speakers.

So obviously right now I am simply using the basic coaxial RF plug straight-into my television.

Thanks for the help everyone, I really appreciate it.

So there isn't a standalone unit that is specifically made for converting the cable signal into an S-VIDEO one?

Cable box from your cable company, but you'd have to rent it.

A standalone QAM tuner might also have S-video and a digital audio out. They're getting harder to find, though. Most new TVs have the tuner/audio out built in.

Or a DVD recorder/S-VHS VCR (although the VCR will probably lack a digital out.)
