View Full Version : Riser on TOP of carpet already installed?

My dedicated HT is being constructed from an already finished basement.

Fortunately, the basement was finished with a fully open floor plan so all I had to do was put up 1 wall and i am good to go.

The problem is there is already carpet installed. So, how do I handle the riser?

Anyone build their riser on TOP of their carpet? How did you secure it?

Any thoughts, ideas, etc... would be appreciated.

Pics would be great as well.

Thanks.

Here's the link to the thread about my riser, with pics. It's on top of my carpeting.

I don't think you will need to secure it to the floor. A riser sturdy enough to hold 1000lbs (guessing on minimum load requirement: weight of 3 chairs + 3 large persons + margin for safety) is heavy enough that it is not going anywhere. If you are concerned about it moving around, you could put carpet spikes on the bottom of the riser. The only thing I would be concerned about is logistics: if you build the riser outside of the room, just be sure you can actually get it in the room :)

No need for anchors. If you want to "attempt" to save the carpet from permanent crush marks you might want to put down a layer of plywood, then the framing. That way the weight is distributed over a large area and you won't have the frame crush marks. Just a big flattened zone that depending on the carpet you might be able to bring back to life with a steam cleaner and a carpet rake.

Well, I don't see a problem with putting a riser on top of carpet either.
BUT, I would put some insulation inside that riser to keep it from sounding like a bass drum. :)

Great feedback guys. Thanks!

I was planning on putting insulation inside anyway.

How about sand? Or is sand more for the stage?

Thanks again!

I've seen sand put in risers, but it is not necessary.
Insulation is adequate.
Since your carpet is already down, I would rule out sand just for the mess it would cause.

Search.... this has been discussed many times.

On carpet is fine. Sand is not necessary.

I chose to build my riser on top of my carpet as well. My room was a already finished room in my basement too. I am not sure what you mean by securing it. It's not going to move anywhere. You can see pics in my "The Bachelor Pad" build thread.

I framed mine out with studs every 16" on center, then added staggered support studs to go the width of the riser, added insulation, and 3/4" plywood to cover the riser. That was then covered in padding and carpet.
