i have read thru many threads here but i have never read of anyone placing an airconditioner wall unit. i assume because of the noise that it may produce or the cosmetics

my problem is i am building my home theater in a detached garage where i cant splice off my home air unit.

i dont want to spend a ton of money on an air condition unit and have to run the ducts.

what is your opinion on this?

can i actually use a wall unit that i can perhaps build into a soffit, surround with mdf and cosmetically cover with some gom?

please help me!

Look into ductless/mini-split systems.

Samsung, Mitsubishi, Amana, etc. More expensive than window units but far less than regular HVACs - and they don't require ducts.

I've never used one, but I understand they are very quite.

They are. I'm 90% with having one installed. You can only hear it when right next to the unit.

Has anybody installed the mini splits that have both air conditioning and heat pump for heating?

Also, I have a small house, I thinking this might work for me for my whole house.

My house has electric baseboard heating. Its small. 3 beds along one wall, one bath, and living, family and kitchen.

I would get one unit to run the 3 bedrooms and and another unit to do the family room and kitchen and living.

Nearly all of Asia uses mini-splits to cool/heat. Typically you add one indoor unit per room. They can all run off of the same compressor.

An interesting thing is that it's typically less money to purchase individual mini-splits than a setup capable of running multiple air handlers.

I plan on getting a heat version as well, but with a heater built into the air handler vs. a heat pump. These can also be used for a dehumidifier (the most inefficient way possible I should add). Heat pump heating is no good in my climate. AUto change over from heat to AC is also needed in my HT.

I've seen that air handlers rated as low as 19db.

I had a Mr. Slim mini split installed in my 11x20 theatre and I love it. With the fan on its highest setting, you only hear it when the room is dead quiet. With the fan on its low setting, you hear nothing. It keeps my room much cooler than I thought it would, even with all my equipment running. I highly recommend it. It cost me $2850 installed. Its a 12,000 BTU system that heats and cools. Here is a link to my thread that shows my Mr. Slim on the wall.

At first, I was hesitant about getting one because I was afraid it would stick out like a sore thumb. Its actually a very nice looking unit and no one ever notices it....Let me know if you have any questions about it.
