Okay, this should be simple, but...

I am checking the signal from my DirecTV slimline satellite dish because I am not getting a signal (had to re-adjust the dish due to hurricane Ike).

I bought a simple signal detector where one end goes to LNB and the other to the cable heading to the multi-switch. I get a strong signal on the meter even if I just connect the end that heads to the multi-switch and don't even connect the satellite side yet.

What's going on??? I checked the receiver side of the multi-switch and got the same result, once I connect the coax to the receiver side of the signal meter, I get a great signal. I haven't even connected the coax to the signal meter that leads to the satellite dish yet!!

By the way, when I connect to both sides of the signal meter, I get a great signal at every point in the line leading up to the receiver (but the receiver still says cannot detect satellite (this is the case with all my receivers).

You're probably pointing at the wrong satellite.

Check the other threads on this.

Cheaper Meters will not allow you to select between Ku Satellites and Ka satellites. They are close to useless for a Slimeline unless you go through the entire install procedure - and then only close, but not pinpoint.

Furthermore, the entire D* procedure works perfectly as per the instructions even if you start out pointed at 110W instead of 101W by mistake. You'll never know you were on the wrong initial satellite for the entire procedure until you can pick up nothing at the STB.

Cheap signal meters are not made for a Ka/Ku install (and are even questionable for a Ku install).

I'm sure that's what's probably going on. The D* folks are coming out Wednesday and I'll letyou know what they found out then.

Okay. It turns out that I aligned the dish perfectly. They didn't have to move it at all. The signal was fine but 2 of the LNBs were bad. They swapped them out and it worked great. Case closed.

Wishful thinking, as with 2 lnbs out, there is NO WAY to know that your dish is aligned properly.

Well, maybe I got lucky. The installer told me he didn't have to adjust the dish from my settings, only the LNBs.
