View Full Version : How are you guys handling HDMI Audio?

I did a quick search but didn't find anything, so I apolgize if I'm rehashing something that has been discussed a lot?

How do you guys with Lumagen HDP/HDQ's or other video processors with DVI inputs handle HDMI audio? Or even those of you with VP30's & 50's that have just one HDMI output?

If you don't have a HD-DVD/BluRay that has multichannel outputs that is?

I'd like to get another HDP again, but I'm not sure what I'd do about losing Dolby TrueHD or the other new audio formats? I currently run HDMI into my a/v receiver.

run all sources into a pre-amp/receiver via HDMI and then send the output of the pre-amp/receiver to a scaler

that or use HD-SDI for video into scaler and HDMI for audio only ;)

Gary, can't we just go back to RGBHV? Please?

How is that bad-assed NEC doing these days?

Thanks,
Eddie

still rockin wonderfully, PQ went thru the roof with 10-bit HDMI input card and HD-SDI sources

Eddie, I love RGBHV as well, but I have just decided to deal with HDMI because it does bring better PQ 99% of the time, HD-SDI you can still of course use RGBHV, leave HDMI for audio only which is perfect, well sort of because nothing HDMI is perfect

I have a Meridian processor with multichannel digital inputs. I just had a BD player modified with 3xSPDIF outs so that I can enjoy the new HD audio formats. It sounds real good too!

Wow, glad to hear the 10-bit card finally came out! :)

I don't understand? I was under the impression that only HDMI or multichannel output could offer the new HD audio formats?
As in, Digital Coaxial and Toslink are not able to carry anything other than the older DD & DTS type formats.

Why did you add 3 of these digital connections to your BD player??

Shawn Fogg on AVS does this mod I think, coaxial and optical can carry the decoded PCM signals so that is not the problem, what is the problem is that they are limited to 2 channels bandwidth or bitstream of lower bandwidth DTS/Dolby, thus 3 of them and you are rockin with full multichannel PCM, a few very high end audio processors have the needed 3 coaxial inputs for multichannel PCM via this connection, such as the Meridian Ron mentioned

I am glad to hear this is being added to BD players right now, all bases are covered with BD mods now, this, HD-SDI and multiregion, wonderful times!! :)

Hi Gary,

Shawn installed the modification for me and it rocks! Some soundtracks really sound amazing in the new formats.

Thanks for the link. Looks cool, but no eight channel support as of yet :(

Shawn can still do it! He would need to use two boards. Maybe use two SPDIF outputs on each board. My Meridian processor only handles 6 channels. I just set the player to combine the back channels with the side channels. Someday maybe I'll get a new processor not not for a long while. I already have 8 channels setup already so I could do it.

I had a feeling that might be the case. I'll have to talk to him sometime... wonder why he doesn't make a board with four SPDIF.

"I'll have to talk to him sometime... wonder why he doesn't make a board with four SPDIF."

I could, there just had not been any need for that. Meridian's can handle 3x S/PDIF and the Lexicon MC-1 can handle 3x S/PDIF. Neither can handle 4x S/PDIF.

What did you have in mind with 4x S/PDIF?
