View Full Version : Doubling Sats in Series for Front Mains?

Hi All,

I have a 2nd HT that serves as our Family Room (gaming for the kids too), it is sort of the "retirement home" for my older HT gear as I upgrade. I have two pairs of CSW MC100s http://www.cambridgesoundworks.com/s...=53CW0030AA001
I already have some Bipole surrounds to complete the 5.1 setup, and have no space for 7.1 rear channels. So I was contemplating using all 4 to make two larger front mains by wiring them in series and stacking them on top of each other, so that the tweeters are in the center of the stack to have a Mid-High-High-Mid driver layout. My big question is whether the double-tweeter configuration might disperse the sound too much, since most large speakers usually only have one tweeter even if they have two Mids.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Just hook it up to hear how it sounds. There's nothing wrong with experimentation.

To do it right, I will need to fabricate some brackets; and I didn't want to spend all day for no reason.

But I will probably get some double sided tape and wing it, just to test. If it sounds good, then I will move forward with the brackets; since I doubt it would sound worse with the permanent mounts.

I apologize. I always assume that people use stands like I do. It's easy to experiment without having to mount stuff on walls.

Bad idea. You will have combing problems. Recommend against it. However, as said above, trying never hurts, though given the effort in your case, if you need larger or more capable mains, sell the ones and extras you have now and get appropriate speakers for the task. Using multiple speakers for mains is not a good idea.

I was thinking of the exact same thing thou a bit further back with another set of JBL control 5 only flip one of them upside down and place it on top of the first one.

If I did that today I’d power the two maybe the two in tandem with the same power amplifier for LF and another to power the HF tweeters, it’s an option where space is tight and freedom of experimentation will allow you to discover new avenues.

You might what to try tinkering around with the idea with loudspeaker management crossover system like the affordable Behrenger DCX2496 as it as time alignment phase polarity differences that can be tweaked providing your running the system with several DCX2496 because you only get thee input channels and six output channels so a few will be needed.

DCX2496 Common usage in three-screen set-up
Inputs
Channel 1 Left Output 1 LF Output 2 HF
Channel 2 Centre Output 3 LF Output 4 HF
Channel 3 Right Output 5 LF Output 6 HF

Simple to do once you’ve had a few hands on hours, thou some might disagree I really don’t give a hoot.

DCX2496 Custom set-up
Inputs
Channel 1 Left Output 1 LF Output 2 LF
Channel 2 Centre Output 3 LF Output 4 LF
Channel 3 Right Output 5 LF Output 6 LF

DCX2496 Custom set-up
Inputs
Channel 1 Left Output 1 HF Output 2 HF
Channel 1 Centre Output 3 HF Output 4 HF
Channel 1 Right Output 5 HF Output 6 HF

Stereo amplifiers
Amplifier Left channel 1 LF channel 2 LF
Amplifier centre channel 1 LF channel LF
Amplifier right channel 1 LF channel LF

Update:
ChrisWiggles was right, the "combing effect" produces some weird results. The "mids" sound great, the doubling effect creates a very rich mid-range sound; which is probably why some higher end speakers have two mids. The "highs" are where is gets dicey; in some parts of songs it sounds like guitar solos have chorus and reverb added where there shouldn't be any, and other areas parts of the frequency get clipped out by what I am guessing is wave cancellation. I guess the only way to pull it off would be to use a management system like jblsound was referring to. No biggie, it was a fun little experiment; and I'll just get some better speakers, the next time I see a good clearance sale.
