joeblow 09-29-08, 02:55 PM The last industry trade show is almost upon us. Tokyo Game Show 2008 takes place on October 9-12 in Japan. Sony HQ of course is in Japan, and there are plenty of things gamers expect to see from developers in the land of the rising sun as it relates to the PS3.

Slacker George 09-29-08, 03:19 PM Whatever became of that rumor that Sony was working on a new kind of controller to debut along with Resistance 2? TGS would probably be their last chance to do a big reveal for it before then.
daschrier 09-29-08, 03:34 PM ===============================
NEWS:
White Knight Chronicles will be on display with a brand new mystery feature never seen in an RPG.
I doubt that's possible...
smastroyin 09-29-08, 03:37 PM In the end, I don't really care about the shows that much, but I do hope at least one of these shows lives up to the pre-show hype.
Crossing fingers for news on Team ICO project(s) and Linger In Shadows.
joeblow 09-29-08, 04:11 PM Whatever became of that rumor that Sony was working on a new kind of controller to debut along with Resistance 2? TGS would probably be their last chance to do a big reveal for it before then.
No news on that in awhile.
I doubt that's possible...
Sure it's possible. If it came with a MLB Baseball license it would be something new to RPGs. We'll have to wait and see what it is.
smastroyin 09-30-08, 09:00 AM Some hope for an actual surprise or two?

The company shared today the list of titles that will be in its booth at Japan's biggest gaming event. More important than what's on the list, however, is what isn't. Sony has nine unannounced first party PS3 games set for the show. It also made note of two unannounced third party PS3 titles, one each from Konami and Irem. These secret titles will all be playable.
Even PSP is getting in on the TBA fun. Sony will be showing three unannounced first party PSP games at the show. Similar to the PS3, these three will be playable.
That's awesome! Not just one minute videos.
briankmonkey 09-30-08, 11:52 AM n4g has a link that claims Uncharted 2 is in the works. I hope it is true :D

Protopet 09-30-08, 11:55 AM Ohhhhhh that would be freakin sweet if it made its appearance at TGS!
Protopet 09-30-08, 01:02 PM Didn't want to start a new thread for this. Just a rumor for now; interesting nonetheless.
http://www.psu.com/PlayStation-4-to-be-+quot;Wii-tized,+quot;-launching-2011-News--a0004951-p0.php
According to Goto Hiroshige at pc.watch.impress.jp (as translated by the ever-obliging posters at NeoGAF), certain anonymous Japanese developers have received preliminary specifications for the PlayStation 4.
If Hiroshige is to be believed, Sony Computer Entertainment's fourth home console has been "Wii-tized", being "no more than twice" as powerful as the PlayStation 3. We're not sure it's just to liken such mind-boggling hardware to Nintendo's underpowered money-printer, but perhaps Hiroshige is implying that the PlayStation 4 will be the weakest of the next-next-gen machines.
Sony has apparently pulled all its engineers out of Texas to work on the new console, which is said to utilise the same CELL architecture (plus improvements) as its predecessor. Techies may/may not be pleased to know that the PS4 will use the JEDEC memory type (GDDR3/DDR3) for its main memory, rather than XDR.
Hiroshige has also pulled a release date out of the hat - 2011 or sooner. SCE is, he says, eager to beat the third Xbox to market.
A load of old cobblers or Gospel truth? You decide.
I think beating the third Xbox to the market would be a smart thing for them, so they don't fall back again from all the people that just want to jump on the next-gen bus.
I don't know about being the weakest of the three consoles though. I think Nintendo will want to take the honors again with another innovative system.
Update: IGN also reported on it and gave a little more information.

I'd take this with a huge grain of salt. I'd also be pretty mad to have to drop more cash for a under developed, over gimmicky system that will be much more expensive then it should be.
pcweber111 09-30-08, 05:51 PM Too soon. I'd hate to think that Sony would do this to it's fanbase so soon into the life of it's current system. It's not even been out 2 years yet, I don't expect to hear serious whispers about the new one until year 4 or so.
joeblow 09-30-08, 05:58 PM Yeah, that PS4 rumor is a stretch for TGS '08, but we all know something is in the works (even if none of that stuff is true).
bdwright77 09-30-08, 06:01 PM what happened to that 10 year lifespan. Have they scrapped that notion?
Slacker George 09-30-08, 06:09 PM what happened to that 10 year lifespan. Have they scrapped that notion?10 year lifespan doesn't have to mean 10 years inbetween each console. Besides I think we all know it's largely marketing spin. In the end they'll just do whatever is best for business. As long as they feel supporting the PS3 is profitable they'll keep doing it, whether the PS4 is also out or not.
This is going to get way off topic for TGS, we should just drop it or make a new thread
IeraseU 09-30-08, 07:07 PM what happened to that 10 year lifespan. Have they scrapped that notion?
That just means they will keep supporting the system 10 years after it's launched. For example, the PS2 is still selling and is still being supported by Sony even with the PS3 being out.
It is theoretically possible to release a new system every year and still support a 10 year life cycle, as long as support for the older systems continues.

Isn't that MLB The Show? The RTTS feature is pretty much an RPG. :D
I just hope the combat system lives up to the hype. It's what caught my attention.
ddanont 09-30-08, 09:17 PM 1) SSX next
2) Uncharted 2

Ooh a new Lumines. That's news to me.
SirDrexl 09-30-08, 10:17 PM I think beating the third Xbox to the market would be a smart thing for them, so they don't fall back again from all the people that just want to jump on the next-gen bus.
I don't know about being the weakest of the three consoles though. I think Nintendo will want to take the honors again with another innovative system.
I'm not so sure it would be the weakest. I think Nintendo might make their next system about as powerful as a PS3 or 360, which would still be weaker than the PS4 if that turns out to be true.
I hope it doesn't happen though. I'd be very disappointed if the PS4 isn't comparable to the most powerful system next generation. I'm not saying it has to be the most powerful, just close enough for comparable cross-platform games (as the 360 is to the PS3). I'm hoping for 1080p games with 60fps to be common, and a system that's only twice as fast might not be able to do that.
However, basing it on the Cell architecture could help, since the developers hopefully would have something they are familiar with rather than a whole new system. It could also make backwards compatibility with PS3 games not that difficult, depending on how it's designed.
BTW, could that new feature in an RPG be something with the Playstation Eye? Maybe inserting your face into the game? It's just a shot in the dark.
HD-Gaming 09-30-08, 10:43 PM should be a good show
pcweber111 09-30-08, 11:19 PM The E3 group would be doing themselves a huge favor by following the model TGS has set for how to run a show. You get the glitz and glam and you give the buying public a day in the sun as well. Everyone wins in the end.
As for what's happening at this TGS I hope to hear more about anything Team Ico has up their sleeve. Ico and SotC were excellent games.

Hatcher 10-01-08, 01:58 PM There is also a rumor, or maybe it's just wishful thinking (http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/689390/Metal_Gear_Solid_Existence_Emerges.html), that the Konami project is Metal Gear Solid Existence, although nobody knows what that is going to be.
Mindwarper 10-01-08, 02:00 PM You can still buy a ps2. In fact, I think they still outsell the ps3. When the price gets to 199$, they will sell more. It is the normal way. Planning for a ps4 is good. Getting developer kits out early is an even better idea.

joeblow 10-01-08, 08:03 PM One of the mystery games revealed! Demon Souls (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/915/915108p1.html), an action RPG with Shadow of Colossus sized bosses:
One of Sony's nine first party PS3 surprises from the Tokyo Game Show appears to have been let out of the bag a bit early. Famitsu got the first word in its latest issue on Demon's Souls.
Players start off this action-RPG with a "dark fantasy" theme by creating their very own character, setting name, gender, hair style and other areas. They then set off on a journey deep into the heart of Voletaria, a kingdom of warriors that was destroyed with the appearance of beasts and demons.
While described as an action-RPG, Demon's Souls appears to be heavy on the action component. Players face off against huge beasts, some many dozen times the size of their character, making use of a variety of weapons. Depending on your weapon of choice, the feel of the action will change accordingly. Even individual weapons will offer play style changes depending on if used with one or both hands.
Demon's Souls is being directed by From's Hidetaka Miyazaki, who served as director on Armored Core 4, and produced by Sony's Takeshi Kaji. The two shared a few insights with Famitsu into the game's creation.
Kaji explained that he's personally a big fan of From's games, in particular the King's Field series. The project started when he ended up visiting From's offices and asked if they might consider making a sequel. They ended up deciding to work on a project of some form together.
The two made particular note of the level of freedom the game offers players. Outside of creating their character, players are also pretty much free to approach the game as they please. There's only a limited purpose to the game. Even if a character asks you to save the world, you can ignore them and still progress.
Demon's Souls is set for a 2009 Japanese release. A playable version will be on display at TGS.

The Irem game is said to be Spelunker HD (http://img188.imagevenue.com/aAfkjfp01fo1i-2929/loc541/46641_S_122_541lo.jpg), a remake of a 1985 game (which itself was a remake of an old Apple II game if I recall). Here's an english blurb. (http://www.psbeyond.com/news/Spelunker-reborn-exclusively-on-the-PS3.933.html) In the original game, you were a cave explorer looking for treasure. joeblow 10-06-08, 07:21 PM Namco will be revealing their full lineup of TGS games (including sevret exclusives for unnamed systems) on 10/7 at 11:00 AM Tokyo time:
Namco Bandai has invited us to its Pre-Tokyo Game Show press conference tomorrow in its building office in Tokyo. What's exciting about this event is that 'secret and exclusive revealing titles' are scheduled, according to the invitation. The press conference starts at 11:00 AM in Tokyo, we'll try to make a Live coverage if we can.

joeblow 10-08-08, 02:38 PM Quantum Theory (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/917/917313p1.html) is a new third-person shooter from Tecmo coming exclusively to the PS3 in 2009:
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/quantumtheory3.jpg
Tecmo has announced an all new third person shooter for the PS3 in the latest issue of Famitsu. Titled Quantum Theory, the game has a dark Sci-fi theme.
Players take control of Sid, a "dark hero" who wields a massive gun, and Filena, a rebellious heroine who wields a weapon that can change between a sword and gun. Both characters are attempting to climb a massive tower for their own specific reasons. Sid wants to destroy the tower. Filena wants to meet her father, who is presumably at the top of the tower.
Specifics on the combat system in Quantum Theory are a bit lacking at the moment. Famitsu reports that the two characters will cooperate as they battle through the tower. The magazine makes it clear that you'll be able to take direct control of Sid. It's not so clear about Filena, so we'll have to wait for an update to know for sure if she can actually be directly controlled by the player.
Tecmo will show off a first trailer for Quantum Theory in its Tokyo Game Show booth starting Thursday. The final version of the game will hit the PS3 some time in 2009.

joeblow 10-08-08, 09:24 PM Not surprising honestly.
SirDrexl 10-08-08, 09:30 PM It's not surprising the way the industry seems to be going, but I don't think a Tekken game has ever been on a non-Sony console (not counting the handheld GBA).
In any case, I am looking forward to another great game for my arcade stick, which should be arriving very soon.
Slacker George 10-09-08, 04:45 AM Sadly, Team ICO's new game is confirmed (http://www.videogaming247.com/2008/10/08/rumour-new-team-ico-game-wont-be-shown-at-tgs08-new-halo-game-a-cert/)to not be at TGS 2009.Well poop. That alone makes TGS a bust for me, blah.
joeblow 10-09-08, 11:31 AM Another feature has been announced....
PSP Plus will allow PSP 2000/3000 units to connect to PS3 so the DualShock 3's dual analog sticks can be used. However only PSP Resistance will allow it for now, and you'll need a copy of the PS3's Resistance 2 as well.
Also, the new PSP 3000 model will allow the unit to go online through the PS3 (ad-hoc) instead of the PSP, as well as access the online PSP store directly.

So I'll be able to play psp games thru my ps3 using the DS3? If so thats pretty huge. I dont really understand the 2nd point. The psp has a pretty weak wifi antenna they need to upgrade it, or better yet give it anywhere internet.
briankmonkey 10-09-08, 01:26 PM Wait, so can we play a PSP game on our big screen? If so I'm very tempted to buy one.. Sure the resolution isn't the best but the PSP has some cool games I want to play, I'm just not into portable gaming.
joeblow 10-09-08, 02:01 PM - The PSP 3000 will likely have improved components to allow it to communicate with the PS3 for direct wi-fi internet access. I hear that in the future, all PSP titles will be available for download from the PSP store (Monster Hunter 2nd G will be the first in Japan).
- Yes, the PSP 2000 and 3000 can connect to the TV (composite cable I think). The new feature announced today will allow supported games like PSP Resistance to work with the DS3 controller (auto-aim off, both analog sticks, rumble support, etc.).
KingShorty 10-09-08, 02:12 PM Does the DS3/PSP connectivity only work for the 3000 series or will it also work on the Slim?
DarrellG 10-09-08, 02:35 PM It will work on the slim also, but not the fattie.
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/10/09/resistance-retribution-resistance-2-interoperability-and-then-some/
Hi everyone, my name is John Garvin, co-director of SCEA’s Bend Studio, and I wanted to give everyone a quick update on Resistance: Retribution. Chris Reese (my co-director at the studio) and I are in Tokyo this week presenting Resistance: Retribution at TGS. After our game was revealed at E3 in July, we got a lot of questions about connectivity between Resistance: Retribution and Resistance 2 on the PS3. We’re pretty excited to announce that yes, we will be providing additional game play and features if you connect R:R to R2! Here’s how it works.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3128/2923716549_a98ec2b7a9.jpg
Connect R:R to R2 using a USB cable. Go into the R2 options screen, and select “Infect your PSP!” That’s all it takes.
Infected mode lasts until you power down your PSP. So, what is “Infected mode”?
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3052/2924568650_66f0018f18.jpg
Infected mode provides an alternate story within our alternate history. While in prison for desertion, Grayson is recruited by Specter Lieutenant David LaSalle (from the R2 storyline) and is infected with a mutated version of the Chimeran virus … a different version of the virus that infects Nathan Hale.
While playing in “infected” mode, Grayson wears a Specter uniform and has glowing Chimeran eyes. He gets to use one of the new weapons from R2: the HE .44 Magnum, which fires explosive rounds that can be triggered remotely. He has regenerative health and no longer needs to look for health packs. He can breathe underwater, allowing him to reach hidden areas that he could not reach before. And we’ve added another whole class of Intel that are hidden throughout the levels. Collecting all of the “infected” intel will unlock another R2 weapon, the Plasma Grenades.
Another cool feature we’re including is something we call PSP Plus!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3128/2924568700_008d9ab47b.jpg
Activated from the R2 options screen, PSP Plus! allows you to play Resistance: Retribution using your Dualshock 3 wireless controller. We remove aim assist and increase the challenge level of the game. We even support the vibration function of the controller. If you’re playing at home and want to experience Resistance: Retribution in an all new way, this is it.
That’s it for this update. In the near future we’ll have some news on our multiplayer game. Stay tuned.

Say what you will but it's BS in my book. I'm big on portable gaming and only own a PSP and GBA. I'ld like to mess around with some games that the PSP's analog just isn't the best for and having the PS3 controller to do it would be great.

Was something advertised on your PSP's packaging that you didn't get?
Are you pissed that you can't stream videos from your PC to your Atari2600 as well as no HDMI?

Ah here we go again, SDF in full force. I'll refrain from talking about this feature ever again. Never knew the Slim and 3000 models advertised that you COULD do this from the get go. It's just plain stupid. Guess it's OK that if early adopters of the PSP would need to go and rebuy a new PSP to try this and any other new features coming out...
I'm a firm believer that if you are going to do something, do it across the board.
joeblow 10-09-08, 04:17 PM Hey cuco33, if it's any consolation I wasn't trying to be a jerk with my response to you.... I actually was passing tissue to you after using it myself since I have a PSP-1000 myself. I also hate it when non-standard features creep up that directly involves the games unless there is an easy remedy/add-on etc.

It's cool, I jumped the gun and figured people were going on the defensive of a cool feature that isn't spread across the entire platforms.
briankmonkey 10-09-08, 04:28 PM Ah here we go again, SDF in full force.
So that's what they call having basic logic, go SDF :D Calling names always makes your arguments more valid ;)

Exactly. It's a surprise bonus. They certainly don't owe you anything. No arguing it would be nice to add more stuff for your model as well. I'm always down for new features and happy to get them, I just don't see any reason to whine about not receiving something that was never promised to begin with.
Then again it isn't surprising coming from you. You complain about a lack of PS2 BC on the PS3 model you bought when you knew about it before you bought and had the option to buy a model with PS2 BC at the time.
TornadoTJ 10-09-08, 04:35 PM I don't see the real benefit of that feature anyway. I doubt I'll ever use it at all, even though I have a 2000. There are better things they could do to tie the PSP and the PS3 together.
GulfWarVet 10-09-08, 04:38 PM - Yes, the PSP 2000 and 3000 can connect to the TV (composite cable I think). The new feature announced today will allow supported games like PSP Resistance to work with the DS3 controller (auto-aim off, both analog sticks, rumble support, etc.).
There are 2 cables that are very similar.
One allows you to view video/photos on your TV and the other does the above plus play games. They are almost identical so always best to get the one for gaming as it does the rest anyway.
Just a pity that RR is so far away.
It does say play infected until powered off but doesn't mention if you have to keep the PSP/PS3 connection for infected play? bit of a bummer if it is.
Will have to get myself a cable now to hook up to my TV ready for RR.
Can't wait for this.
DarrellG 10-09-08, 05:59 PM I suggest getting the component cables for the PSP and if your TV is pretty far away from your seat, you should also get the extension. I play FF Crisis Core on my 56" all the time and it's great. I'm looking forward to this feature.

Protopet 10-09-08, 10:45 PM Here is a downloadable game I just saw on IGN. The video looks good. Release date: TBA 2008
PowerUp Forever (http://ps3.ign.com/objects/142/14247611.html)
The Quantum Theory trailer is pretty awesome as well. I'm guessing it's all pre-rendered footage, but it's still cool nonetheless.

We asked whether there'll be cooperative play in the game, but were told that wasn't being talked about.
Online modes are also being planned for the game, though the team isn't ready to get into specifics. According to the fact sheet, players should expect 'matches that offer a variety of winning conditions and rules.' It also says 'choose your favorite character and fight against another person or create your own army and fight against another team.' The team wasn't willing to get into what the 'create your own army' part meant.
Quantum Theory is currently scheduled for release in the second half of 2009.
DarrellG 10-10-08, 03:01 PM Not a bad idea, I wish it was closer to $19.99 instead of $30 but I guess we'll see when it hits the states. I'm wondering if it will be able to charge the PSP using just a USB cable also. You can probably use it for other USB devices too.

Even with today's wireless video game controllers, you can't stay untethered forever. After a few hours of gaming on the PlayStation 3, you'll have to plug in that SIXAXIS or DualShock 3 USB cable to charge. Starting December 18th, Sony Japan will offer an AC adapter intended for PS3 controllers at a price of ¥2,800 (just under $30). Like third party solutions we've seen, it has two USB ports so you'll be able to do two controllers or toss in a Bluetooth headset. Nothing yet on availability outside of Japan, but if we get word we'll be all over it, 'cause we feel slightly guilty for leaving the PS3 on overnight to charge -- what with the world's dwindling energy supply and all.

^^ I have a 'similar' cable that's USB on one end and both power charger and PSP/USB port on the other end. Only gripe is that when transfering big files it's not the best and I use the Sony OEM version or other good brand.
Pretty neat though although I don't see a use for it myself
There are generic AC-USB charger thingies with four ports for like half that price.

Yes there are and many of them won't work with the PS3 controller because Sony engineered a little protocol that is required for the controller to go into charge mode. I love my PS3 but Sony's perverse need to make everything just a little different in constantly annoying.

This is from the latest Famitsu issue.
It looks like Gears, especially with that cover mechanic.
