View Full Version : PS3 Whole-house Distribution?

I have all my coax cables in my home terminate in a single hub in the laundry room.

I wonder if I can create a setup where I can connect the audio and video on the PS3 to coax cable and redistribute to other rooms. Since the controllers have a pretty good range, it would be cool for anyone to play PS3 games in any room. Of course the video and audio won't be ideal but if it works it would be pretty cool.

Thanks.

Easy to do...horrible quality results.

All you need to do is put the PS3 on a modulator and inject it into your cable distribution. That will put it on an unused cable tv channel and you can tune to and get the audio and video from the TV and TV speakers. The quality is going to suck, but if you don't care, this is the cheapest and easiest way to go.

You could also get an HDMI distribution switch and run cables throughout the house. Expensive, but doable.

HDMI cant really travel far enough and maintain quality.

just released these recently . Take a look

LTM-5HDT4

pricey just to distribute ps3, but transmit over cat 5 and would need 1 of these at each location

Oh there are A LOT of ways to distribute a PS3, but he was asking for a way to do this using his "existing" cabling.
You can run HDMI pretty far with good cables, and even further with dual CAT5's. Both are $500 solutions per run.
Using the modulator.....$75 or so.

I guess the biggest problem I always have with these solutions is that while sure there are PSN games to play, most of a gaming collection is going to be disk based, and no matter how you distribute, you will end up having to go and change the disk. And of course it's not like there is a multi-out so it's not like two people can play different games. Which isn't to say I am against the OP's idea, just against the idea of spending much more than $100 or so to do this. Once you are spending on 50+ foot HDMI runs or to wire Cat 5, just go buy another PS3.

Here's one I found by googling the word modulator;
$55 to $80

I actually did this. I have a simple channel plus system and hooked up the ps3 via composite inputs. Yes, the quality will not be as good as direct feed via component or hdmi (that's obvious) but still more than watchable. I could actually bring my controller to my bedroom and play COD4 while the ps3 is in the family room downstairs.

I have this

Yep, it's just like watching SD cable hook up directly to your TV's RF input without surround sound. If you have a nice cable amplifier with gain and tilt you can tweak it to look really good.

This seems to me like it would be better off to use with the 360. You could have it downstairs and you play upstairs in the bedroom. Maybe you will be able to hear the game over the fan noise. lol I love them but damn they are noisy.
