View Full Version : Best Digital PJ
DVD MAN 09-30-08, 09:59 AM Ok Gents,
I am considering to go digital from CRT.
What PJ has the best black level and primary secondary colors out of the box.
(It can not be a single chip DLP)
Art Sonneborn 09-30-08, 11:27 AM Low lumen: JVC RS20
Moderate lumen: SIM HT 5000
High Lumen: Christie HD6KM
:D
Jason Turk 10-01-08, 08:25 PM Best black level is the RS20 for sure...and the overall look will mostly closely mimic the CRT. But to really help you, we'd need some more information (a price point is good because Art has you refinancing your house). :D

It's funny how relative lumens are. I would have described them as:
Average lumen: JVC RS20
Light Cannon: SIM HT 5000
Holy S%^&*: Christie HD6KM
:D
DVD MAN 10-05-08, 09:20 PM My Sony G-70 CRT is on the operating table I am assisting Curt Palm to try to revive it but its not looking good. If it does not work out I will be going digital. I was thinking of Pioneer PRO-FPJ1.
Price Range about $8,000

ChrisWiggles 10-06-08, 05:43 PM That's just the old JVC. Get the JVC, better yet the new one which gets you gamut control. It's cheaper than the pioneer markup.
As a CRTer myself, that's by far my first recommendation. I'm looking at going exactly the same direction from a 9500LC, and IMO it's really the only thing to consider for my CRTer tastes (on/off CR, smooth image, no need for a light cannon since it's a small screen, etc).
audioguy 10-07-08, 11:11 AM I went from a Mike Parker modded 9500 to the JVC RS2 and have zero complaints. Whatever shortcomings there are relative to the 9500, they pale in comparison to the convenience and the upside and I'm sure the new JVC's are even better. You will love it!!
(PS: I tried the earlier JVC's and that was not a pleasant experience --- (everything looked "cartoonish")

I also went from a MP Modded 9500 Ultra to an RS2 with a Radiance and I totally agree with you. The RS2 beats the 9500 in every aspect except black level and the black level is good enough.
If I was purchasing today I would go for the RS20 and be very happy.
Chris.
DVD MAN 10-07-08, 06:31 PM Thank you all for that info.
What is the diffrence between these two? JVC DLA-HD750 and DLA-RS20 THX Certified HD Projectors.

Both should be very similar but we've yet to hear from JVC US on exact differences.
DVD MAN 10-08-08, 06:26 PM I have been waiting for boards from Curt Palme for a few weeks. I am hoping that the boards that I receive from him will repair my Sony G-70.
I am also getting anxious to get my home theater up and running again. So I am know considering just to leave the G-70 behind me and going forward with a digital pj. I would have consider the JVC RS20 or the HD-750 but neither or available yet
I can get the Pioneer at a great price.
Is this unit the same as the JVC-RS2?
With the gamut control on the Pioneer can the primary and secondary colors be adjusted to hd standards?
Will I be going backwards as far as overall picture quality if I get the Pioneer over the Sony G-70?
Thanks
mrlittlejeans 10-08-08, 06:39 PM I didn't think there was gamut control on the pioneer.
DVD MAN 10-16-08, 12:03 PM I got the replacement boards from Curt Palme unfortunately it was not the boards it was a crack green tube. Take a look! http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1066345.
I decided to get the Pioneer Pro FP-J1. So far I have been very happy. I was just hoping that the primary and secondary colors could be adjusted to standard unfortunately they are not. Black level is great I set the gamma at 2.4.and the black level is truly great not quite like I get from the Sony-G-70 but very good. It is my understanding that the color issue can be taken care of with the purchase of an outboard possessor.
What’s the most reasonable possessor that will do the trick?
Mackeyser 11-10-08, 06:38 AM The difference between the JVCs, if I am seeing the information correctly is that JVC's RS (reference standard) has a black housing and the other model has a white one. Edit: the DLA-HD100 has a black case. Not sure about the 75
There may be a few other differences, but they would be minor.

Yup the housing difference is about it for the HD750 and RS20. The contrast spec is different between the HD350 and the RS10 though and this hasn't yet been explained.

What do you mean by best black level. Absolute black level or perceived black level (contrast). We see comments over and over again here how going to a brighter picture with high lumens and high gain screen is what gives the biggest wow factor.
A brighter picture of course means higher black levels but some think a more pleasing picture. If you are still stuck in CRT thinking, then you just attenuate the light levels to CRT levels and put your eyes down into low light levels where they may be degrading color perception, and maybe other visual properties of your vision.
After all your eyes adjust at different light levels and change what you perceive. Most of us want to the best picture, not the lowest black level or some other best single parameter measurement. That would be like turning down the volume on music to get the lowest noise level which many of us think degrades the excitement of a lot of music.

If you read above he's already bought a Pioneer Pro FP-J1 (RS2 clone).
Regarding colour issues. Unfortunately you'll be looking at a fairly pricey processor to correct both the primary and secondary colours. The Lumagen Radiance seems to be what most go for for this purpose. It's a shame there isn't a separate colour-only processor.
My Crystalio II and the older Lumagen HDP can adjust the primaries, but secondaries can suffer.
