How do you check the over the air channels (primarily looking for HD) with a cable subscription? For example, in my area I put in the cooresponding 2.1 for that HD channel. However, because I am currently subscribed to a local cable provider, 2.1 isnt available and goes to 2. I can however get to 2.1 by going to some large number channel such as 108.1.

Do most homes built past 1995 have a OTA antenna in the attic or how can I check to make sure that when I disable cable subscription that I can still get some OTA and OTA HD?

Most homes do not include an OTA antennas, look in your attic or on the roof, if the previous owner installed one there find the cable and connect it.

Before you cancel your cable, (if no existing antenna) go to the antennaweb site and see what is available to you, it will also tell you how far you are located from the antenna's.
If you are close enough you may be able to use an indoor antenna with an amplifier.

Your post makes it sound as if you just purchased a new television that is DTV/HDTV and you're using an analog "cable box"! If that's the case and your new television has a QAM tuner you can do your local DTV/HDTV using your QAM tuner and a direct connection from the wall to the cable in on your television. Posting your location and cable provider will help someone help you or do some searches using "QAM tuner and your provider"!

You might also enter your zip code here: http://www.silicondust.com/hdhomerun/channels

Your post didn't sound to me like you wanted to "leave cable" just maybe enjoy the capabilities of a "new investment"!

Wow! That's almost identical to the URL referenced above.

To the OP:

No one mentioned to you that when using a TV's internal QAM (digital cable) tuner to receive unencrypted channels, the digital channels can get "mapped" differently (depending on TV and/or provider) than the real cable channel (E.G. Channel 2 = digital channel 108.1). The link provided for silicondust.com should give you an idea what channel number to use to select the desired channel.

I didn't "BOTHER" with your link! There was no need to, I was just trying to head the OP in the direction I thought he might want to be headed! I explained also the reason I headed him in that direction.

I'm "happy" that you found it entertaining!!!!!!!! And "NO it's NOT nearly identical"!!!!

Now roll our eyes!!!!!!!!!!!

Why not? Reading the previous posts and info provided helps to avoid the redundancy and rolling eyes. ;)

I did... and it is. Same site, same info. Just a different way to enter the zip code. "Nearly" is the key word. :p

Re-read the 1st post closely. These are the main points:
I can however get to 2.1 by going to some large number channel such as 108.1.

... how can I check to make sure that when I disable cable subscription that I can still get some OTA and OTA HD?
