Hey guys...

I currently own a Sony KLV46W400A and I was wondering if any of you have any of you can explain to me the whole RGB Limited or Full concept? And Super Whites? Sorry... newbie here.

Anyway here's the deal. When I set it to Full some black details are obviously gone but the color seems richer, and deeper. Limited brings out all the colors but something tells me Full produces them better. Is it just my eyes? I would like enlightenment on the topic please. Thank you.

The search function should reveal numerous threads asking the exact same question as you, and the ensuing answers. I think I remember reading this exact same thread just last week.

^^^ No one has an exact answer or you probably would have found it with your search. I leave mine to limited.

The real deal is that the PS3 doesn't 'show more' colors when putting it on Full. The setting sits there only for compatibility reasons (using the PS3 on a PC monitor).

It probably will be different for different HDTVs/monitors. Whichever looks the best.

With my DLP HDTV, Full is best. I have Blu-ray set to Auto (RGB/Component 4:4:4 being the other options).

IF your tv properly deals with video levels, then LIMITED and SUPER WHITE ON are the correct settings. Recalibrate your tv once you've made the change or things may look "dull".

If need be, visit the calibration forum on AVS. :)

From what I have gathered on the various TV forums on here is that it should be set to limited and then re-adjust your settings.

I corrected your comment since there really is no difference between full and limited in terms of picture quality. If Full looks better on your DLP then it isn't properly calibrated in the 1st place. What I'm implying is that Limited PS3 on a Limited TV will look the same as Full PS3 on a Full TV, if you catch my drift.

There are many topics on this forum which show how to test wheter your TV crushes blacks when using Full. I tested the PS3 on many modern TVs already and never did I see a difference between Full and Limited, besides Full (often) crushing blacks. Crushing blacks simply means that you are losing (color) details on your screen. Again, the screens that supported Full showed the same depth of color so there really is nothing the lose sleep over. Just keep it on Limited.

My DLP HDTV is one of the Full ones. Limited looked terrible in dark scenes.

A TV like that would make no sense cause then you would lose colors when you connect a Limited only source to your TV. TVs either accept Limited only (and no full) or both. In the end, it makes no difference as to what you see on your screen from a PS3 (Full / Limited). No offence, but if it looks crap on Limited and good on Full, then your TV isn't properly calibrated to begin with. Again, the PS3 just maps the colors from the limited band to the full band, so there aren't 'more' colors or anything on your screen when using Full. There really is no reason why full would look better on a TV than limited other than that your TV isn't properly calibrated. Full PS3 is only for PC monitor compatibility (over DVI) and, in the end, will show the same amount of detail as Limited PS3 on a limited TV.

You should download some of those colormap test images to your PS3 and see wheter your TV shows more bands of blacks when using limited Vs Full. I doubt you will see a difference when you turn up the brightness / contrast. Those images show 'hard' numbers and numbers seldom lie.

I also use full with my DLP. If I set it to limited I can't calibrate it properly.

FYI, there were a couple of DLPs that actually assumed "full" mode when in certain resolutions. If they received 480i, 720p, or 1080i, the assumed TV scale and with other resolutions assumed computer monitor scale.

So if the DLP is one of these, I could see it needing "full" scale if the PS3 was sending 1080p. An experiment would be to have the PS3 send it 1080i and see if it looks right with "limited".
