Hey,

I got my PS3 for over a year and I finally pulled the trigger on a set of speakers. Since i just bought the center and back speakers now (bought towers last month) I will now be able to enjoy 5.1.

My question is : right now, my PS3 is connected to my Onkyo 606 via optical for audio and straight to TV via HDMI for the video. Should I get another hdmi cable to connect ps3 to my receiver via HDMI and then my receiver to TV via HDMi? This way i could truly enjoy the nice sound of bluray and gaming :D My amp got 4 HDMI in (if i recall correctly) and 1 out... so it's possible to do so.

Sorry if it sound dumb, the guy at the store once told me i was better with optical... but I now doubt it and I wanted your inputs :o I want to get the best of my setup :)

Just for infos, speakers are : KEF IQ9 (front), IQ6c (center), IQ3 (rear)
Amp is : Onkyo 606
TV : Samsung 4661F

Thanks

Well I'm no expert, but I have been researching this lately because I'm interested in getting my own setup. Hopefully somebody will correct me if I do make a mistake.

I think your Onkyo can process LPCM (loseless audio) through HDMI, the only way to get 7.1 or 5.1 LPCM from the PS3 is also through HDMI. If you use optical you will only get 2.0 LPCM. So yes HDMI is best for your setup.

That's exactly what I thought. Thanks for reply! I wasn't sure if what I read was true and if i was not getting this straight: The optical can only output a more compressed signal I think. To get the PCM you must have HDMI. The only problem I have with going with 2 HDMIs, is for video quality and video/audio sync... anyone can scare my fear away :D My amp can only do 1080i ...

The guy in the store is an idiot if he was talking about hooking up a PS3 for the best sound.

You need an HDMI run from your PS3 to your Onkyo and then from the Onkyo to the TV. Set your PS3 to HDMI LPCM (not bitstream) audio output.

And before you ask about the cable... http://www.monoprice.com

Your AVR should just pass thru the HDMI video untouched. The specs show the HDMI bandwidth as 1080p.

I have the Onkyo 605 and it passes through the video untouched (480i through 1080p). I'm sure the 606 does the same. It only starts messing with video if you use the analog inputs on the receiver, and even that can be turned off.

I'll hook it all with HDMI tomorrow! I'll get my cable and speakers tomorrow... can't wait! I'll have to replay alot of game to enjoy the 5.1 :D

I might keep the optical cable too... i read that to support 5.1 for PS1 and PS2 titles, you need to have the sound with an optical cable... Guess I'll have HDMI into my games/TV slot and Optical into satellite or any unused thing. :)
