View Full Version : G90 front fan speed modification to quiet that bugger down

Some time ago I decided to replace the front fan on my G90 with the SilenX fan that JohnHWman suggested. No doubt it really succeeded in quieting the projector.

But lately I've read a few threads by G90 owners who have had some problems that may have been heat related. Since no one really knows for sure how "overdesigned" the G90 is with regard to cooling, it is somewhat of a gamble to replace the OEM fans with something with less cooling ability.

Electrical wizards like John have the ability to fix their projectors if a component fails, but many of us "normal people" can't do that. So I decided to keep my SilenX fan installed, but reinstall the OEM fan as well - slowed down from its original speed of 4500 rpm to about 3000 rpm. It's not as quiet as with only the SilenX fan, but it's a heck of a lot quieter than with the full speed OEM fan.

It took some experimenting with various resistors, because the power supply couldn't provide 12 volts when both fans were connected. I decided to post the details of what I learned on this site:

I think I have a good compromise now between reasonable projector noise and adequate cooling capacity.

I really like this idea, especially after what happened to me LINK (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1070026).

After living with the combination of the slowed down OEM fan and the front 80mm SilenX fan for a week, I decided the OEM fan was still too noisy.

So I purchased a 60mm SilenX fan, model IXP-34-16, and replaced the OEM fan in the OEM fan housing. I removed the resistor (installed to slow down the OEM fan) and wired both SilenX fans in parallel. Details are described in my updated website at:

http://www.kawal.net/G90%20front%20fans.htm

The projector is much quieter now, and I feel that the combination of two front SilenX fans will provide adequate cooling for the circuit boards.

When compared to the OEM Japan Servo fans, the SilenX fans are vastly overrated in performance. But even with that said, the projector is now so quiet that it is again a pleasure to watch.

By the way, these SilenX fans are only about 15 bucks including shipping from online stores like newegg.com.

Hi,

Great news! I didn't catch it earlier, did you replace the four in the back as well with SilenX fans?

Yes, Doc, I did replace the four rear fans. I mentioned that in this other thread:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=772172&page=12

I had previously done considerable testing and evaluation on the SilenX fans when I had a G70. That documentation is here:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=788782&page=7

and additional posts in that thread.

As noted, I had three special SilenX fans built for my G70 with a bit higher speed (1600 rpm) to improve the airflow. I used those three fans plus one standard 1400 rpm SilenX fan for the rear G90 fans.

The SilenX fans have neither the quality nor the airflow of the OEM fans, but they are so quiet that I trade the reduced airflow for the significant noise reduction. I had no problems with the G70 and I think the G90 is OK as well. But that single fan up front seems to be pretty important, so I like having two SilenX fans to replace the original OEM fan.
