View Full Version : Local and distributed video wiring
loverster 10-04-08, 09:34 PM I am building a new custom and want to distribute video and audio from a central location. I am running 3 RG6 and 3 cat 5e to each zone. In our main location I wanted to have the option to have a local receiver, blueray and satelite dvr. This location will have 7.1 surround. What do I need to do different in terms of wiring the speakers or cat5e to this room so I can either run it locally or distribute it from the main location?

Sounds like the hybrid scheme we do all the time, I have broke it down too many times to count now. Try a search...

Right click on the the user name and then Left-click on "Find more posts," seems pretty straight forward to me. :D

Thanks, that is what I have been doing. Not really seeing how he has been over this so many times, but I do see some great posts from others that are very useful.

Why even post if you have nothing useful to say at all. Or maybe you just like to be an ass to new people?

I gave you direction to look, because I have written about the same thing over and over. Now I have some lazy jerk off calling me an ass. People like you are why I am not writing the same thing again.
bandphan 10-07-08, 01:18 AM if the op is to lazy to search, maybe he should hire someone to do install for him, cause the install is harder than searching;)
flight23 10-08-08, 08:39 PM Everyone is so friendly.

Make sure you are using the right coax. RG6 with copper-clad steel center conductor and aluminum braid is not it. It may work for a short distance, I just wouldn't use it in a new construction.
What you need is bare copper center conductor, 100% aluminum foil shield and 95% tinned copper braid. You probably don't need RG6, however. Depending on your distances, Mini coax or RG59 would probably suffice. Also, what are you doing for audio? If you want to distribute 7.1 audio, you need at least another coax (of same construction) for coaxial digital out. If all you have is optical toslink, you will need some sort of converter from coax or Cat 5e. Make sure you are also running enough wire for IR return - unless you are doing a whole-house RF solution.
As with Roddy, check some of my previous posts on coax. This is a subject that comes up quite often.

BROCKWOU 10-09-08, 01:38 AM I had your similar question a month ago. I didn't know where to start. I've never heard of multi switch, baluns, and converting cat 5 wire to video. So when I posted the question I had similar response from a sarcastic post. Don't let it get to you. Did you search Hybrid Scheme on AVS forum that robby said you would be doing?? He said he was helping you, well I did that search and I couldn't find any questioned answered on this hybrid scheme??
These guys love to let everybody know that they know everything. These guys are on here 24/7 and I'm sure the question has been answered many times, but I think every question posted on AVS forums has been answered several times.
After other members of the site helped me understand what to search for, then I began doing my homework. I wanted to run three different components (dvd, HD Tivo, and stand alone HD reciever). I was all set to run the video off of cat 5, but ended up running mini coax bundle. The coax was expensive but less headache. I just finished tonight and it works great. I can watch any three of the components on any tv.
Search switchers, cat 5, and baluns. Keep asking questions. Many people on here do want to help. Don't let one ass, keep you from asking more questions. Let us know how your coming along and what equipment your leaning towards.

Actually most of us are not here quite that often. We try to help when it seems like someone is willing to do some leg work. When you act as though someone owes you something when you are too damn lazy to do your own work, what do you expect?? Some of us actually get paid to provide the answers we are giving away for free.
The same question get asked over and over again. As stated earlier, I clicked on my name and found a post where I go over the hybrid scheme I use.
Do you really expect everything in life to be handed to you??
BROCKWOU 10-09-08, 11:01 PM I don't think "loverster" said he wasn't willing to do leg work. Instead of being sarcastic ass, you could of told him what to search and left it at that. I don't think he said anyone owes him anything. He asked a question and that was it. Only after you were an ass did he respond to you being rude. That is my take. I don't know why you would even respond to his question if it bugs you. Just move on. People who want to help him will respond to his question and HELP him and guide him to the right searches.
