Hi guys - goin a bit nuts here. Got my first UB last week, convergence wasnt great - was going to live with it when projector started turning off by itself then giving me overheat messages when it had NO ventilation problems. Fine.
Returned it to dealer. They had QC'd that one.

They QC'd the new one. Convergence is Ok but the projector is obviously brighter on the right side - dimmer on the left. The left is redder and the right bluer - and brighter. I notice this on any blank white screen or blue sky, etc.

Am I expecting perfection? Do any of these units not have issues? I kindve feel foolish having to apologize for wanting a perfect unit after having dropping a good amount of cash for this thing. So Im wondering, return this one? Not return it? Forget a projector altogether or would DLP be the answer? I know. A lot of questions. Whew.

Perfection and obvious visible defects at normal viewing distances are different things. (As is perfection and a product that erroneously turns itself off) I haven't owned a 1080UB, but I'm getting ready to buy the TW4000 (6500) from a local brick and mortar store (unless Panasonic has a sudden change of heart and stops price gouging those of us who live in Japan) next month, and if I have experiences similar to either of the projectors you've described, I'll be bringing it back to the store for a new, unopened replacement right away.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Your mention that moderate convergence issues would have likely been acceptable makes me think that you would not only be justified in exchanging, but hopefully satisfied as well. (Third time's the charm?)

How much is the convergence off? Can you post any screenshots?

Actually - this one has ok convergence. Just red shading on the left side/blue on the right - and the right is brighter.

Does anyone have complete color uniformity?

Thanks

Perfect uniformity on an LCD projector is very hard to come by, but you shouldn't be able to see a noticeable difference in the brightness when comparing one side of the image to the other...

I'll chime in since I had a similar problem as you. Everthing was great except I had the color shift isuue. (green/blue to the right of screen) Brightness was uniform though.

I had a replacement sent to me. Great color and brightness uniformity, but bad convergence to the left of the screen.

I had a second replacement sent to me and voila! Near perfection. Good uniformity, good convergence, good focus... This one is here to stay and I couldn't be happier.

It's a bit of a hassle, but I would keep trying if I were you. These 1080UB projectors, while not cheap, are a HUGE bang for your buck and get you 99% of projectors costing close to 3x the price of the 1080UB. You just have to sort through the imperfect models to find a great one.

I spoke with Epson and they said they would send out a replacement but it would be a refurb.

Have those that received their replacements received new ones or refurbs?

They told me that the only way to get a new one was if I was within the original 30 days of purchase.

The refurbs I have received have looked like new. I was upset about not getting a brand new unit as a replacement, but not so much anymore.

OK - I posted before about my new 1080ub and the color/brightness uneveness. Now I noticed - when the screen went to black - I can see little white dots, smudges, and what looks like scratches.

Now I dont know if this is on the lens or dust blobs but damn! This was supposed to be a new replacement of a one week old projector. (Tell me this isnt a normal occurance on these projectors)

I wont mention the dealer (though they do have a good rep on here) but frankly, Im gonna ask for a refund. Weird.

If they tell you that you have only a month to get a new one and your month runs out while you're in the middle of your 3rd return, you should tell them its either a new one or they can count you off 30 new $100 bills.

Don't stand for it or they won't ever fix the problem...if it costs them enough in returns and shipping/receiving costs, eventually, somebody around there will get off their dead-@$$ and fix the freaking problem (why do these people still have jobs?)...sorry, incompetence is my pet peeve...
