View Full Version : Need some tune up help please! See photo.
segarolow 10-07-08, 06:49 PM Hello All,
Hi need a bit more tune up help please! Please see photo. Please drop me a line on how I can take care of this.
Thanks and be well all.
Curt Palme 10-07-08, 07:04 PM Ummmm.... where to start.
What projector is it?
Have you read the manual?
did it work at one point, and did the set suddenly do what you see in the pix?
nashou66 10-07-08, 08:05 PM I think its a sony 1031Q from his other posts.
Athanasios
draganm 10-07-08, 08:19 PM Have you read the manual?
?MANUAL? He doesn't need an owners manual, just a "tune-up":)
segarolow 10-07-08, 08:30 PM Hello all,
It is a 1031Q. I have gone over and over the manual :).... I got this this free
and I have been trying to get it set up right. I have got to going better and better thanks to all the people here that have been a great help. :)...
The thing is this!!!!!!! I can not get it just right. If I get the blue to not over lap, the red will. If I get the red to not over lap, the blue will. I know it can be done, just a fine tune I think. Any help will be cool. I will get this think yet!!!!
I will not give up! I will win this yet! How do I fine tune this thing??
Be well all.
Brooklyn 10-08-08, 12:58 AM You do realize there is a switch to set the corner convergence apart from the overall convergence. First get the center of the picture converged then go to the edge adjustments. It takes some practice to learn how to set up correctly but once you get the hang of it it will be a breeze.
Brooklyn 10-08-08, 02:07 AM Oh yea I should also say you need to start with a green grid by itself that is square, level, even, etc. Then do one color at a time to match the green.
segarolow 10-08-08, 02:16 AM Hello,
And that switch I do not know where it is at? I am new to this and want to get this going right. If there is any more you can tell me please do. I will get this right yet!
Thanks.
Curt Palme 10-08-08, 08:52 AM Can you post a pix of the test grid?
1) Set all convergence controls to midposition.
2) Set up the green first
3) Overlay the red to the green
4) Overlay the blue to the green.
5) Work the controls left to right across the convergence board.
I'm not sure why you say that if the red is OK, then the blue is out and vice versa. The R and B convergence controls are COMPLETELY unrelated. Once the red is set to the green, leave it alone, then work on the blue. DO NOT adjust the green to overlap the red or blue. Once the green is set, leave it alone.
Post some pix of the test pattern, not the projected image. That will tell volumes.
The Sony manual is amongst the best written out there. follow it step by step, don't jump around, and you should be fine.
There are nine 2 pin connectors that need to be set correctly before the convergence controls will work within range. Make sure those are set as per the manual before proceeding.
segarolow 10-08-08, 11:46 AM Hello,
I will send some more photos and info today. Nine 2 pin connectors? ...
Again a bit lost here, but learning. I will get this right and going good.
I will not give up! I am just going to rock on and keep at it! ..
Best and only way.....And thanks for all the help. I need it!
Dan
segarolow 10-08-08, 01:03 PM Hello,
Pix of the test pattern. And you are right! A photo is a 1000 words.:)
Any help will be great! I can do this and will, just need a little help.
Thanks... Be well. :)
segarolow 10-08-08, 01:05 PM Photos...
Any help please!!!!
Clarence 10-08-08, 03:41 PM Hello all,
It is a 1031Q. I have gone over and over the manual :).... I got this this free
and I have been trying to get it set up right. I have got to going better and better thanks to all the people here that have been a great help. :)...

Hello,
And that switch I do not know where it is at? I am new to this and want to get this going right. If there is any more you can tell me please do. I will get this right yet!
Thanks.
You saw the part in the manual (http://www.curtpalme.com/docs/Sony1031_Install.pdf) about adjusting these controls, right?
Brooklyn 10-08-08, 03:55 PM Yea your best bet to start from scratch. Work the green by itself, getting the grid square and convergence. Don't worry about the 4 corners until the end. There is a "tilt" switch I believe it is called to enable the corner adjustments, on the right hand side.
Just to make sure...you do have the cover off of the projector, all of the controls are under the top cover.
Also, if the image is upside down or mirrored, then you need to set some jumnper connections first before you begin convergence.
segarolow 10-08-08, 08:38 PM Yes I see them, and know where they are at!!!!
segarolow 10-08-08, 08:42 PM Yes I have the top off and know where everything is.....I just do not know how to get all the blue green and red to all over lap as one....
garyfritz 10-08-08, 11:16 PM You do have the projector set up mechanically correct, right? That is, at an appropriate distance, exactly square to the screen, centered on the screen, level, etc? Getting that exactly right BEFORE starting will make your job easier. Then, assuming the 1031Q is like other projectors I've seen, you'll want to make sure you center the rasters on each tube. But follow the manual, it should tell you what to do.
segarolow 10-08-08, 11:26 PM Hello,
I have it 110 inch from the screen. , level and all. I just cannot seam to get
the red, green and blue to over lap as one. I know I am doing something wrong,
but what it is????
I will keep at it. And thanks for any help.
Dan
segarolow 10-09-08, 10:45 PM Hello all,
Can anyone tell me just how to bring the red up on this photo.?
Any help will be great! I will get this yet!
Be well all.
Clarence 10-10-08, 08:03 AM does anything happen when you adjust these three dials...
segarolow 10-10-08, 12:11 PM Hello,
Yes it moves up and down ect. I now have this...(See Photo).
But I need to get it all white!.Still have a bit of red, and green on
the very outside. But getting much better. Can you please tell me what to do next. I do not want to mess this up.
Thanks for all the help.
Dan
Clarence 10-10-08, 02:41 PM Just put up the crosshatch grid and keep cycling through all of those registration/convergence controls... everytime you do it, the grid will get better and so will your personal convergence skills.
lcaillo 10-10-08, 03:02 PM Randomly cycling through the controls can send you in circles. Doing them in the correct order will simplify the process considerably.
mtmelvin 10-10-08, 11:54 PM Have you seen this site?

Have you read this?

segarolow 10-11-08, 12:54 AM Hi,
Yes I have. And I am going to go over them again.
Thanks.
Dan :)
Clarence 10-11-08, 10:15 AM Randomly cycling through the controls can send you in circles. Doing them in the correct order will simplify the process considerably.
To clarify any potential misinterpretation, both of the graphics that I provided, plus the installation manual I linked to, designate the proper cycle sequence for registration.
segarolow 10-11-08, 11:34 AM Hello,
I am going to to do the proper cycle over and over until I get this right!
It is the only way to get this right! Thanks for all theinfo..
Dan
Brooklyn 10-11-08, 05:50 PM Use the grid not the white screen to do adjustments.
segarolow 10-11-08, 06:03 PM Hi,
Grid??? I am still lost a bit here!!!! I am doing something very wrong here! And the bottom it goes in....I will put a photo up of it...
Any help will be great!
Thanks....
segarolow 10-11-08, 06:15 PM Hello All,
I know I am doing something very wrong here! But I will just keep at it and get it right!
The bottom goes in on me... And I think that is one big thing on why I can not get this to line up right?
See photo.. Any help please! Thanks...
segarolow 10-11-08, 06:33 PM Hello All,
I know just what is wrong! I can not seam to get a everything square!
The red, blue, green all need to be square to over lap right! And they are not square.
The bottom turns in.I need some help please! How do I get the red, blue and green
to all be square. All even...
Thanks...
nashou66 10-11-08, 08:45 PM Do what they told you earlier, square the green first, center it and leave it alone, never touch it again. then align red and blue to the green with out touching the green controls.
Athanasios
segarolow 10-11-08, 08:59 PM Hello,
I will try that again.....
Thanks and be well.
Brooklyn 10-11-08, 11:23 PM Check the geometry section here:
http://www.curtpalme.com/CRTSetupGuide3.shtm
A crt set up is not easy the first time, and will not be quick(it will take hours). You need to start with the green by itself first dont even look at blue or red. Square the green grid, and also get the line spacing even (linearity controls). Make sure the image is not going off the edge of the CRT. There is no secret short cut, no single answer to how to fix your alignment.
segarolow 10-11-08, 11:33 PM Hello,
And thanks for the Info... I will try it all over and start with the green... One thing.
It goes in at the bottom. Maybe I am back to far are... ??
Any help on that.. Thanks...
Be well.
Jim Kildare 10-12-08, 06:53 AM Hard to tell from the pic, but if the bottom is going in you will want to adjust the skew control. Look at Clarence's pic above, top row. Then look at all the controls below skew for the symptom and color you want to fix. You should really start with green as stated earlier.
Jim
Curt Palme 10-12-08, 08:41 AM By your random questions, either you're not reading the manual and/or understanding it, or the convergence board isn't working right, which is also possible. Your question about how to move the center square red grid up makes me think you're jumping around in the manual.
The manual is VERY easy to understand, has lots of pictures. If you jump around in the manual, just looking for the sections you think you need, you'll never get it. Start on page 1 and read and do EVERYTHING it says.
segarolow 10-12-08, 01:45 PM Hello all,
Thanks for all the info. One thing I did do was move the projector up, Like about 3 1/2 feet. And now I am getting a very square green, and it does not turn in at all. It is very square. And center. .... I got this projector free, and I do not know how many people had it, are what size they had it set to. I see in the book there are like 3 are 4 size.
it can be... Like a 97 inch are a 76 inch and on... Maybe I have had this thing back to far. I have the green set. Now I will try the red and blue.. What fun this is....!!!!!!
eddy_winds 10-12-08, 03:13 PM What fun this is....!!!!!!
Lol
Good Luck ;)
Brooklyn 10-12-08, 07:11 PM Keystone adjustment will fix the "bottom going in"
segarolow 10-12-08, 07:13 PM Hello,
Thanks for the info. I will get this right yet! ... Are we having fun yet? You bet!
Be well. Best way!
Curt Palme 10-13-08, 10:20 AM Maybe I have had this thing back to far.
You're STILL not reading the manual. No offense, but that turns old timers like me off, and we stop giving advice.
segarolow 10-13-08, 12:12 PM Hello,
I read the Manual ok, like 10 times now! Something is not right with this thing. Like if I put it 129 inch from the screen. The bottom turns in big time. And on page 7 of the manual. It has Check the convergence of the red, green and blue.It has lines. I do not get lines. I get a square box. Not lines. And I have done this about 10 times. I understand what it is saying to do, but I do not get lines. Just the square box.? And it has make the three lines converge and the pattern white. O I read the manual ok. And I will do it for time 11. I will put it back at 129 inch. I will start new, and I will try it all over. Quit is not in my book. Fix is. So I will need to find out just what has happend to this thing. Fix it....
So I am off to try one more time. From the start. This thing should of been up and running. So I will get it done! That simple...
Be well and God Bless All.
Curt Palme 10-13-08, 12:23 PM Are you absolutely sure the convergence board connectors are in the right place? Page 22 of this service manual:
http://www.eboyztoyz.net/download/1031Q%20Service%20Manual.pdf
segarolow 10-13-08, 01:00 PM Hello,
I am going to go through the service manual very good and see that everything is in the right place. Like I said, I do not know who had this thing before me, what they did are?
So the best thing is to start at A again, and look at the service manual very good. And see if everything is in the right place. And if not fix it. I will let you know.
Be well.
Dan
segarolow 10-13-08, 08:34 PM Hello,
Did some looking and everything I see looks right. One thing I have not looked at is on page 26 of the manual. Conversion for 72" 67" or 150 - 200. I looked at the Manual on looking into that. That is the outer limits for me. ........
I will read over the Manual very well. Look at everything good, and look again.
I think one of three thing is wrong.
1. Someone changed something?
2. Something is wrong and it has to be looked at and fixed?
3. I am doing something very wrong?
I have and will read the Manual again from A-Z Do as it tells me. And then do it again. ... Like I said I got this free, who had it, what they did and how they set it up???? What they changed???
I should of had this up and going by now! ...... I will try again, as I said. Quit is not a word I use. Fix is.... So I will fix it, get it going and rock on....
Be well all. The best way.... Are we having fun yet! :)
segarolow 10-14-08, 12:30 PM Hello All,
Ok I did a few things ....Like read the Manual again. Now I do need to know this, please!
I am using a wall. Ok. What I need to know is this. When I am doing all this set up. How big are the set up pictures to be. Like 3 feet wide? 5 feet wide? Are is it to be like 5 X 5 feet? Are? I am putting up a photo. If I can just get the red a very little more to the left it will be all the same color.:) I will get this yet!
Thanks all... Are we having fun yet? You bet!
nashou66 10-14-08, 02:09 PM Size doesnt matter that much it will however change the geometry if when you move it back the keystone might change some if you raise or lower the PJ's hight.

segarolow 10-14-08, 04:22 PM Hi,

anthonycrove 10-14-08, 06:34 PM I was thinking that how to get all the blue green and red to all over lap as one because when i tried that i am not able to do it.
segarolow 10-14-08, 06:44 PM Hello,
Yes I am having the same bit, I can come close. But not 100% as you need to.
There must be a way? And I will just keep at it. are we having fun yet! You bet!
Be well.

segarolow 10-15-08, 08:47 PM Thank you Thank you very much!!!! Now I see something new, I have not been playing with them on that side. Just the other.
Wow! My mess up!
Are we having fun yet! You bet!
Thanks..
Be well.
Clarence 10-16-08, 06:38 AM I have not been playing with them on that side. Just the other. You've been doing this repeatedly for 2 weeks and never followed the manual's sequence of adjustment?
segarolow 10-16-08, 11:24 AM Hello,
No and yes.I did go over to that side, and did as it said. Nothing happend. Everything just did not move at all. Zip 0. So now I will start again. Why things do not move when I
use the very right side???
Real mess I got myself into here.
Be well.
draganm 10-16-08, 12:07 PM is it just me or does this thread have a twilight zone feel to it? I am waiting fo the Rod Serling narrative to pop up at any time.:)
segarolow 10-16-08, 12:40 PM Hello All,
First All this is MY Mess up! I will be the first to say it! If I did it, I did it! And on this I did it! And good! With that said, please read on.
First I have done much wrong here! So I am going to start a day by day thing.
And I will call it.. My Free CRT And My Mess Up.
I am going to start over at A. Yup A. As if I just got it today. And I will READ the set up BOOK A-Z. And do all it said. Everyday I will put up a photo are two. And everyday I will tell and show just what is going on. My Mess, My clean up. That simple!... This is the only way I can clean up my mess.
And I am going to clean it up. If anyone has anything to say, please do!
I am open to all, the good bad and what not! ... I will keep this going for a few weeks.
This is day one.... Projector is home.
Time to read the Set Up Book from from A-Z.
Be well all.... And Have a great day.
Curt Palme 10-16-08, 01:34 PM Well, you have it sitting the right way up on the coffee table, that's a good start. Trust me, I've seen people put them in upside down...:D
segarolow 10-16-08, 02:10 PM Hello,
I am that bad yet I hope..:).
segarolow 10-16-08, 02:16 PM Hello All,
Now I am going to set up the projector as the Service Manual has it down.
Page 15... 130 7/8 from the wall/screen. And 26 7/8 up on a stand.
And that will be done now! To the T.
I will do this and the right way!
Are we having fun yet! Up bet..
Be well all.
segarolow 10-16-08, 09:04 PM Hello All,
Well I have the projector at 130 7/8 from the wall.
And this is what I have got right now...(Photo)..
I will drop on over to Home D and get some wood to put
under the stand. It is only 22 " inch high. It needs to be 26 7/8.
That will be done tomorrow.
Be well all. Are we having fun yet! You bet!:)
Brooklyn 10-16-08, 10:03 PM You green grid is still not right, however it is not too bad. You need to adjust the linearity, notice how the boxes at the top are squished. They should all be the same.
segarolow 10-16-08, 10:43 PM Hello,
Thank you for the Info. And after I get the stand up to 26 7/8. I will start going the next thing in the book. And I will do it right to the T.
Are we having fun, you bet!!!!
Be well. And again thank you for the info....
segarolow 10-17-08, 02:11 AM Hello All,
One thing maybe someone can tell me about here? The projector is
130 and 7/8 from the screen/wall.It is to be 26 and 7/8 high. But the table
it is on is only 22" inch high. Can I use this table at 22" high, are must it be
26 and 7/8 high? ... And what can I do here if I can keep the 22" table.
Thanks for all the help.
Be well all.
segarolow 10-17-08, 06:30 PM Hello All,
Well it is day 2 of my mess up with my free CRT. Well here is todays mess up.
See Photos. ......
1. I have a all white square. :)....
2. I have this also photo on 2. The bottom is fine but the top and sides
do not match yet. Still working on it.
Also I did get a number of a guy from the net. He does this kind of set up.
But I know it will cost a Arm and Leg for him to come out. :(... he is about 40 mile from me..
I will keep at it a bit more. And try to clean up My Mess.
Be well all. And have a great safe day.
segarolow 10-18-08, 12:17 AM Hello All,
I know you all must have given up on me by now as a lost case. But I am not a lost case, yet! :)... I did move the projector up just a few inches. And now get this.. See photo... It is getting better. On the right side I have a all white
box. The Red, Green and Blue are all the same size and over lap into one. And become white. on the left side it is not so good. See photo. And I still need to get the lines to over lap right. Still reading the set up book. And doing what I can........What ever anyone has to say, please do. but don't give up on me yet!!!!! I may be down, but not out!!!!!!!!!!!
Be well all.
segarolow 10-18-08, 07:07 PM Hello All,
Well it is day 3 of my free CRT and my mess up.And here we go!
I did a little more on this today, not much. I did move the Projector up
more about 2 1/2 inch. And things seam to be getting a bit better...
See Photos. .. Now I need to get the blue just right and the red lines
just right. I need to move the the lines without moving the square box
on the right hand top. I will do this very slow, a bit at a time.
I will get this yet! Are we having fun yet! You bet..
Be well all.
Brooklyn 10-18-08, 08:10 PM Dude your green grid, the one you should be using as a base is still off. You should not even be messing with the Red or Blue until you get the green right. It just needs the linearity and some corner(tilt) adjustments it looks like. Should look more or less like this.
http://www.curtpalme.com/images/tuberastersetup3.gif
segarolow 10-19-08, 02:31 PM Hello,
Thanks for the info. The Red and Blue are now OFF. Going to get the Green
to look like the photo...
Thanks again..
Be well.
segarolow 10-19-08, 02:57 PM Hello,
Well today I am going to just do the green. Get it square as I can.
This is what I have now. I am going to go very slow and get the green
as it should be.
Be well.
nashou66 10-19-08, 04:53 PM Almost there you need to get the bow out of it, but getting close keep at it!! :)
Nashou
Brooklyn 10-19-08, 05:06 PM Notice how the boxes at the top are squished compared to the boxes in the middle. You can fix that easily...
segarolow 10-19-08, 05:30 PM Hello,
Yes all most. But I can't seam to get the bow out of it yet. But I will keep at it...
Are we having fun yet! You bet!
segarolow 10-19-08, 05:32 PM Hello,
Yes I see that the boxes are not right on top are the bottom... PLease fill me in on this if you will. Point me in the right place please...Thanks..

I have got it. Thanks.. More up dates soon.
Be well.
segarolow 10-20-08, 09:13 PM :)...Hello all,
Well here it is one more day with my mess up. See photo.!!
I can NOTget that blue part on the top to come down. If it does come down.
If I could get the blue part on top to come down, just by itself. It would all be white as it should be. If itdoes move, it moves all over notjust the top as I need it to. And yes! I did read the manule......
I will keep at it,:) All Ican do... And again thank for all the input from everyone.
Be well all. I will just keep at it and rock on....:)
segarolow 10-20-08, 09:15 PM :)
Brooklyn 10-20-08, 09:20 PM Adjust blue Linearity(Lin) control in conjunction with the blue Vertical Size control. Like adjust the linearity so the top and bottom are off by the same amount, then adjust the size to move them in or out together.
segarolow 10-20-08, 10:46 PM Hello,
Thank you for the Info. That is what I will do tomorrow. Again thanks..
Be well.
segarolow 10-22-08, 09:10 PM Hello All,
Well I am talking with a guy that does set up and fixing of CRTs and LCDs.
He is about 40 miles from me. I am trying to work out a weekend that he will be open so he can come on out and do this right. And get it all set up and done. He was out my way last week, but I had not talked with him yet.
So I will try to set something up in the next few weeks and get this done.
Yes I will pay a bit, but not a Arm are a leg. And it will be worth it to me.
I just want this over and done.
Be well all. And rock on....And thanks for all the great help...:)

segarolow 10-23-08, 12:46 PM Hello.
And you have got me thinking a bit about that! Did I miss something that is right in my face? Did I over look something? It will be a few weeks until the guy can get out my way again. So I am going to go over things very well. And see if I did miss something. I must be doing something wrong? Just what it is??? So until he comes out, I will keep at it! You never know.
Be well all. And Rock on!
draganm 10-23-08, 12:49 PM I can't belive your paying someone to come over to your house to set-up a 1031Q. That's like paying someone to come over and cook Kraft macarroni and cheese for dinner. :D
I suggest you look around for a nice CRT, one that can actually do at least 1080i HD resolution. then pay someone to install it professionaly, even hang it from the ceiling.
segarolow 10-23-08, 02:05 PM Hello,
Keep in mind this was a FREE CRT. And it does work..Being on a set income I can not just go out a buy a good used are new one..I did mess this up. And I am still trying to get it back right! If I need to pay a bit to get it back going as it should I will. But if I can fix it and get it going, well cool for me! Thenext few weeks will tell.
Be well and rock on...
Briands 10-23-08, 02:58 PM Never saw you mention your location (you can post it in your profile). You may have a neighbor (or at least someone within driving distance) that would swing by to help you out for a couple of beers.

garysorenson1964 10-23-08, 05:06 PM I got an old Sony 103?Q set up in my bedroom. I set it up a year ago and since then I've had absolute zero problems and zero drift. These sets make up for their res in reliability. So, where are you at with your setup. I may be able to help.
draganm 10-23-08, 05:07 PM Had it going, and tryed to make it a bit better. And I made one big mess.Upset You bet! conidering the pic that a 1031 puts out you have nothing to be upset about, your not missing out on much.;)

Here are a couple sample pictures taken from the projected image of a 1031Q in action. These pictures don't do the projector justice. The real image is much brighter and punchier, with better contrast (a lot more shadow detail than the photos), has a lot less grain, and better colors.

I have several screenshots from a 1031, too. For a free projector, I think the 1031 is capable of a very decent 60"-72" 480P picture.
